I laugh though at the CIA being upset with him, since he's been associated with William Casey, former head of the CIA. Sounds like another case of the analysts (agency white hats) vs. the covert operators (black hats).

I thought I had heard his name in conjuction with the Bush in Paris/October Surprise story, and had - here's a snippet:

Many sources agree that a conclusive series of meetings between Reagan-Bush and the Khomeini forces took place in Paris during the October 15-20 period, and there is little doubt that William Casey was present for these meetings. According to the account furnished by Richard Brenneke, there was a meeting at the Hotel Raphael in Paris at about noon on October 19, attended by George Bush, William Casey, Don Gregg, Manucher Gorbanifar and two unnamed Iranian officials. Brenneke says that there was a second meeting the same afternoon, with the same cast of characters, minus George Bush. Then there was a third meeting at the Hotel Florida the next day, October 20, this time attended by Casey, Gregg, Hashemi, Manucher Gorbanifar, Major Robert Benes of the French intelligence services, and one or two other persons.

Gorbanifer was also mentioned in Ollie North's notes:

Among the North notebooks released May 18 were those
reflecting the coverup began November, 25, 1986, when then-Attorney General Edwin Meese announced at a White House news briefing the sale of U.S. arms to Iran and diversion of the profits to the contras. Much has been written about the notations North jotted on one page of his steno pad that day.  "Call from JMP," North wrote, referring to his boss, National Security Adviser John M. Poindexter.  The page continues: "VP call Peres ... Discovered contra connection ... wd be best if Israel wd accept that they were aware that some funds were diverted ... Put it off on Gorbanifar [sic]."  Thus, North suggests that Vice President Bush telephoned Israeli Defense Minister Shimon Peres to enlist his help in the cover story pinning the diversion on Iranian businessman and arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar. Why anyone would trust that guy is beyond me. But that's what I mean re the "Reality Gap' - there are those who live in reality, and those who are trying hard to create another one as if belief and lies will bring it into existence...!
