In football terms: pre-game tactics are changing by the quarter.
Zill preparation leads to a white wash, not knowing the tactics of your opponent, expecting a reception with flowers.

I have the feeling, the US is playing on the wrong field - at least the crowd has turned against Team Enduring Freedom.

It's time to change quarterbacks!

"They will not have died in vain"?  They weren't soldiers betting their lives on any specific goal or outcome!  They were citizens and civilians beginning their day, going to work, traveling to tend to family or friendships, going shopping......these were the goals of the people who died - not whether or not they were going to let terrorists "win" (and please let us not forget the maimed and wounded like she always does because they will never be the same again either).  I can't say whether or not these people will have died or been maimed in vain.....I suppose that only they could tell us about that!  This woman is fucking freakin LOON!  I'm sorry the Brits are having to see our ASS AGAIN TODAY.  I guess yesterday with George just wasn't enough of seeing our ASS.

Last night, ABC News' Nightline had a segment in which the three guests were Richard Clarke (former anti-terrorism czar), Michael Scheuer (former CIA anti-terrorism expert and "anonymous" author of Imperial Hubris) and David Ervine (former Northern Irish terrorist and now leader of the Progressive Unionist Party).  Clarke and Scheuer are known to be rivals who rarely think terribly highly of one another.

But all three appeared to be in agreement that the current rash of Al Qaeda-style terrorism has virtually nothing to do with an "ideology of hate" or opposition to our Western way of life and democratic values.  Rather, they agreed that it is based principally on resentment toward an aggressive U.S. (and U.K.) foreign policy of stomping all over the Muslim world "like the Jolly Green Giant" (Ervine's phrase).  Thus, in their minds, almost everything we're doing currently only serves to make the situation worse.  Ted Koppel briefly tried to get Scheuer and Clarke to contradict the other, but neither took the bait.

What every terrorist hopes for (they said) is an iron-fisted response.  What those same terrorists fear and dread the most are (1) admissions that there may be some underlying justification to their grievances, and (2) an openness to discussions with moderate (that is to say, non-violent) opponents of the government's policies.  Either of these can sap the strength right out of the terrorist organization; taken together, they can marginalize the terror group from those who might otherwise be its core supporters, causing the organization to implode.

Is there any chance that the Bush Administration will ever learn this lesson?  Somehow, I doubt it very much.

It isn't what I wanted to hear but at least I know that my upset stomach has been right, and it is nice to have "experts" on the topic of terrorism confirm that I can trust my gut.

BBC reported bodies are still trapped in the commuter train wreckage in the tunnels. Above ground, people from London have started to put up posters of friends and family members, who have gone missing from the moment the bombs went off yesterday morning.

(AFP/Adrian Dennis)

July 8, 2005 -- A friend of a suspected victim is comforted near Tavistock Square, where a terrorist bomb destroyed a bus in London. For the loved ones of those missing and as-yet still accounted for the agony was just beginning.

An account of an employee, a 19 year old French boy who went missing. He normally reported for work between 9 - 9:30 am, and traveled on the subway lines which were attacked. Calls to his mobile phone go unanswered as it changes to voice mail and since the attack, have filled its memory. The parents from France will come over to learn what has happened to their son.

Desperate Londoners hunted on Friday for missing relatives

Distraught relatives searched for missing loved-ones around hospitals, many handing out leaflets appealing for information.

"It is killing us," said Kim Beer, searching for her hair stylist son Phil, 22, who might have been on a bombed train. "He always kisses me and cuddles me and tells me he loves me every time he goes out of the door -- which is what he did yesterday and I haven't seen or heard from him since."

A number of Arab world watchers have described the claim as credible. This group also claimed the Madrid bombings. An interesting reference I read in Juan Cole's Salon article:

The phrase "Qaida al-Jihad" refers to the 2001 decision made by Ayman al-Zawahiri, a leader of the Egyptian terrorist group al-Jihad al-Islami, to merge his organization into bin Laden's al-Qaida ("the Base"). The joint organization was thus renamed Qaida al-Jihad, the "Base for Holy War." (Zawahiri and bin Laden had allied in 1998.)

The group claiming responsibility for the London bombings represents itself as a secret, organized grouping or cell of "Qaida al-Jihad in Europe." It is significant that they identify themselves as "in Europe", suggesting that they are based on the continent and have struck from there into London. This conclusion is bolstered by their description of the attack as a "blessed raid". One raids a neighboring territory, not one's own.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian terrorist, makes the death of Egypt's highest envoy in Iraq on the same day as the London bombing not just coincidental, more likely a message to western intelligence - our terror effort is linked and global. We can still strike at will at the Zionists and Crusaders of the West. It was also a recent message from Al Zawahiri that foretold an upcoming attack.

Egypt's highest envoy al-Sherif killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD (CP) July 7, 2005 -- Egypt will close its mission in Baghdad and withdraw its staff after al-Qaida's wing in Iraq said it had killed an abducted top Egyptian envoy. Iraq's chief government spokesman said the killing and Thursday's bombings in London show terrorism "is not only targeting Iraqis but everyone".

Al-Qaida's group warned it would go after "as many ambassadors as we can" to punish countries that support Iraq's U.S.-backed leadership. The announcement from Iraq's most feared terror group appeared on an al-Qaida-linked website and featured a brief video showing blindfolded Egyptian diplomat, Ihab al-Sherif, wearing a polo shirt. The video did not show his death but the statement promised more details later.

"We announce in the name of 'al-Qaida in Iraq' that the verdict of God against the ambassador of the infidels, the ambassador of Egypt, has been carried out. Thank God," a written statement in posting said, adding: "Iraq is no longer safe for the infidels."

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry offered condolences for the "assassination" and an Egyptian diplomat who spoke in Cairo said the government is sure al-Sherif is dead "from our own means".

Biography and roots of a terrorist Ayman al-Zawahri

During President Sadat's Open Door' economic policy in the late 1970s that Ayman al-Zawahri completed his graduate studies in Medicine. Sadat's rapid "coca-cola-ization" of an undemocratic Egypt had started and colleges across the nation brimmed with social unrest. Islam became the countervailing force to what was perceived as a Judeo-Christian attempt to weaken religious beliefs and values. This was particularly true of the School of Medicine, an especially fertile ground for the activities of Islamists as opposed to other departments at Cairo University.

It was just about the time when Ali and his brother were selling Arabian horses from a makeshift stud farm in Atascadero, California, in 1982-3 that Ayman al-Zawahri MD served time in jail for his association with the Jihad that claimed responsibility for President Sadat's October 1981 assassination. The downside to the Camp David's Accords (peace treaty with Israel) and its concomitant economic support from the West was that an entire generation of disillusioned and confused young Egyptians had defected to the ranks of Islamist militants, egged on by rising corruption and Khomeni's anti-American rumblings in Iran.

After three years in jail, where even the most confirmed secular will turn into a potent militant, Ayman al-Zawahri closed his modest surgery located in the worn-out section of Maadi and left for Saudi Arabia a rancorous man.

Some within Ayman's family claim he was wrongly arrested and subjected to terrible torture. In a recent CNN interview, a lawyer relation, Mahfouz Azzam, stated that Ayman was 'an outright humanitarian hence the reason why he joined the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (Red Cross equivalent) following his release from jail.'

From Saudi Arabia, Ayman made it to Pakistan about the time when Afghanistan was shrugging off its Soviet occupiers. It was while practicing medicine in Peshawar that Ayman al-Zawahri met his partner in terror Osama Bin Laden.

'The heroic mujahedeen have carried out a blessed raid in London'

A statement appeared July 7 on the jihadist website Al-Qal'ah (Fortress), purportedly posted by the group claiming responsibility for the bomb attacks in London today.

The following is a translated text of the statement:

The Secret Organization Group of al-Qaida of Jihad Organization in Europe (Jama'at al-Tanzim al-Sirri, Tanzim Qa'idat al-Jihad fi Urupa)

Al-Qaeda ordered attacks on Europe on May 29: Spanish newspaper

MADRID (AFP) - The Islamist extremist group Al-Qaeda ordered attacks on Europe in a May 29 Internet message that the Spanish secret service forwarded to their British counterparts at the weekend, a Spanish newspaper reported.

The Spanish national intelligence centre (CNI) sent a copy of the Arabic-language message -- signed by "Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades -- European division" -- on Saturday to the British intelligence service MI5, and it was also published Saturday by the daily El Mundo.

The message, entitled "Letter to Mujahedeen in Europe", states in part: "We now call on the mujahedeen around the world to launch the expected attack".

The Spanish secret service has been examining the statements of the European division of Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, named after an Al-Qaeda leader who was killed in Afghanistan, since the Madrid bombings, the newspaper said.
