Plan D is - thank goodness - working ok for Mom.  She has the Humana plan that's $65 a month but with no deductable and no "donut hole".  It's about $20 more a year than the cheapest plan, but it precludes having to explain to her why her meds cost $X this month, $Y for the next few months and then back to $X..  Fortunately, two of her most expensive meds ($60 copays) are going generic this year and one has already dropped to $7 from the $60.  The anti-viral she needed last week for a wicked case of shingles was $30 instead of a little over $200.  BUT... It's still a lot more out of pocket than it was when her doctor was providing her with samples which he hasn't been able to do since Plan D went into effect.

Fortunately, Mom doesn't have to choose between paying for her prescriptions and eating as many do, but she's still feeling the pinch.  The only way I can see Plan D working is if the government gets the right (and the will) to negotiate prices with Big-Pharm the way that the Veteran's Administration does.

One way or the other, this darkness has to give....

I know!  Plan D is still spells Disaster for the vast majority of seniors who were herded into it willy-nilly.. I have a 93 year old friend whose son researched and found her a plan that was supposed to cover her medications - surprise, the formulary changed after she signed up.  The non-calcium version of her arthritis med is covered, but her doctor won't change the prescription so she's stuck paying premiums and paying for the prescription out of pocket.  That's bait & switch and should be illegal..

Per Medicare Rights Center:
As you know, for the first time, in 2007 the Part B premium will be based on income.

I have a reporter from the Knight Ridder newspaper who would like to interview people who are going to be faced with higher premiums.

Is Mom or the 93 year old friend interested?

The Medicare Rights Center does not support this change because Medicare is for all Americans age 65+ or with disabilities regardless of their income.

Means testing Medicare can be a very slippery slope.

It may mean that more affluent people go elsewhere for health care coverage, leaving the poorer and sicker people in Medicare.

terrialiceatgmaildotcom and I'll foward it to MRC  (Medicare Rights Center)

Two points regarding Humana part D plan with no donut hole:

  1.  Humana is seemingly taking great financial risks here, so don't get used to this version!

  2.  They are supposedly trying to limit supplies of certain expensive drugs, such as enzymes, that they will allow filled, so be careful!

Remember reading something about the Humana plans, can't recall what it was right now.

Anyone else think that I'm going to start digging again?

Sheesh!
