Only in America would people believe that a generation of Democratic leaders were gunned down by various lone nuts with excellent marksmanship skills.

In any other country when a leader is killed or otherwise removed from office the people who removed him put in a replacement who will do their bidding. They will figure out ways to ensure that their power will continue. And they will make sure that future politicians will understand and show obeisance to those who hold that power. And they will have the power, either through future murders, blackmail, etc., to continue to hold power.

The problem with this kind of analysis, however, is that it makes arguing about the "cowardice" of Democratic leaders irrelevant.

yeah, because if there is one thing the powers that be wanted it was medicare and the voting rights act of 1965.

and head start. the economic elite wanted head start. sure they did.

and the Clean Water restoration act. the power elite were just screaming for the clean water restoration act.

yeah
you believe that
sure you do

and let's not forget Affirmative Action. because the economic elite were just pounding the table for that one

Alice, your point is well taken. Lots of progressive stuff was passed in 64-65 before Nam became the mess that it was. (I would argue it was part of the guilt or what have you that surrounded the death of JFK) Then what happened? The guy who ran as the peace candidate in 64 became the war president. The horrible year of 68, Nixon, Watergate, the first imperial presidency and so on. Carter was the last Democrat in the Whitehouse, and the country viewed him as a dismal failure. Reagan, Bush, Clinton (simply a thinking person's republican)and more Bush. After the voting rights bill of 64 or was it 65, the solid south became republicans. The whole thing switched. Those who profit from war and preparations for war have been pulling the strings ever since. Ever since?......if you don't like my date, fill in the blank yourself.

We need to push for Progressive change, now more than ever.
