If Democratic Primary was held today:

I would vote for Bob Casey   1 vote - 4 %
I would vote for Chuck Pennacchio   21 votes - 95 %
I would vote for someone else   0 votes - 0 %
I would not vote for any one   0 votes - 0 %

It won't be ironic at all. It will be the predictable end result of the national Dem party placing the mirage of electability ahead of actually being a Democrat. If I were a Pennsylvania voter -- and thankfully, I am not -- I wouldn't vote for Casey in November, either. I would rather have Santorum win another term.

Why? Because a Republican is not as dangerous as a Republican disguised as a Democrat. Both of them will do great damage to the country, but only the latter will provide the thin veneer of "bipartisanship" that makes it so much harder to fight their initiatives. We need Casey like -- well, like we need another Joe Lieberman.

If this keeps up, we'll have Zell Miller on the Dem presidential ticket in '08.

I could not have said it better.  And I have many, many friends and acquaintances who do live in Pennsylvania who feel exactly the same way.

the mirage of electability...

Oh that brings back bad (Howard Dean) memories.... the Stepford lockstep Dems all voting for Kerry because he was electable.  (Could be a really funny story ... maybe Albert Brooks should do a movie about those caucuses)

You may be interested to know that a lot of Pennsylvanians agree with you.  Six friends/ acquaintances have now told me that if Casey is the nominee, they intend to vote for Santorum.  They (and I) feel that as long as someone is going to do exactly the wrong thing for PA, it ought to be a Republican.  My circle of acquaintance is not atypical.  If it's Casey, I will write in Chuck.  If the rest of my region even just stays home, Casey will lose, and very badly.

It's going to be a happy day when I'll be able to hold my head high the day after the May 17th primary with Pennacchio's name on the ballot as the Democrat on the ballot for U.S. Senate; I'll be able to go to the polls in November and proudly push that button [totally not as dramatic as pulling a lever as I used to do in NY] for a real Democrat to be my Senator.

Casey will not get my vote in November.

Casey sounds about like my 2 crap  Dem Senators but your analysis seems to be pretty biased.

First, you gloss over the negative readings.  29% despise Santorum and will likely vote for a moldy sock instead.  Casey -- just 6% (so far).  I suspect getting rid of Santorum will drive much of the left to the polls even if it is to hold their noses to vote for Casey.

Secondly, among those with mixed views on both, almost few seem to favor Santorum.  He has 29% favorable and only 36% would vote for him today.  Would appear that almost none of non bible thumper core base favor him.

Thirdly, you assume as the 38% that don't know much about Casey learn more, they will trend away from him.  He actually sounds a lot like Specter on many issues who made mincemeat of Joe Hoeffel (11pts).  Penn isn't Massachusetts.  Assuming progressive = more popular among the middle isn't that great an assumption.

Good luck.  With Akaka and Inouye, I have two old school semi-conservative D machine pols and no real bench in wait.....If you elect Casey, you probably have 18 years of the same in store for you.

by HiD on Fri Feb 17th, 2006 at 05:15:37 AM EST
I really don't think I glossed over any numbers.   I laid them out for all to see and provided my interpretation which you are free to disagree with.

I think those numbers suggest that much of the Casey support at this point in time is really anti-Santorum sentiment rather than pro-Casey sentiment.  I also think that Casey's low negative numbers combined with the fact that his very large "don't know enough about him" numbers suggest that there are a lot of people who just don't know all that much about Casey.

It wasn't very long ago that I was among the group who would have held their nose and voted for Casey, but as I learned more and more about his positions on so many issues and realized I disagreed with him on so many things I realized I could not vote for this guy even if the alternative is Santorum.  I will not, of course, vote for Santorum either.

And don't forget. Casey is running a virtually invisible campaign.  He makes few public appearances; rarely seeks out the media; and has refused to participate in the League of Women Voters' sponsored debates between the other two Democratic candidates.  The media largely ignores the fact that Casey has competition in the primary.  He recently held a "conference call" for a large group of Democratic voters where they expected him to field calls, but he instead spoke to them and then ended the call withoud taking questions.  No wonder voters know so little about him... now.

Yeah, I was on that "conference call" if you could call it that.  It was all of maybe 9 minutes long after a few minutes of holding.  His manager got on the phone and immediately said that "This call will be listen only" after it was billed as a chance for people to ask him questions.  And then Casey got on for about 4-5 minutes and then hung up.  What a dick.

on classic manipulative negotiating tactic is sometimes labelled the Ben Franklin.  You set up a list of pros and cons.  You help the sales target with the pro list but leave him/her come up with the cons on their own.  What I see here is a variant.  You play up info that fits your argument and just let the bad news lie without discussing.

It's not that I think you are being evil or anything, it just seems you are only seeing what you want to see.

29% despise Santorum and will likely vote for a moldy sock instead.

Look, both political parties both in PA and across the nation, are very unpopular and in large part because of precisely this sort of lame strategy. They despise Santorum for good reason and they will despise Casey for precisely the same reasons. There is no difference between these two men.
The bias is yours. You seem to think that despite the undeniable betrayal and demonstrated contempt of the Democratic leadership that voters will still go along with the plan. This is an argument with only works with very partisan Democrats and the only thing partisan Democrats will assure when they make this argument is more voters who self identify as independants.
Look, even partisan Democrats (who have huge biases and, demonstrably,  enormous disconnects when it comes to predicting the behavior of voters) should recognise that when the actual positions held by of one of their candidates need to be kept a secret as long as possible, when the only argument for electing him is that he isn't the hated incumbent   there is a problem. That's not leadership and it's insulting to the voters. Besides, after 20 years of stealth religious right candidates most people are on to the tactic.

The reason people will trend away from Casey when they learn more about him is because PA is not as socially conservative as people lead you to believe.  The state is reliably pro-choice.  Right now many people have no idea how socially conservative he is.  The reason Spector can still win is because he is not a social conservative and has the endorsement of both NARAL (that will change now after Alito) and the Teachers unions.

but trending away from Casey to move to Santorum because Casey isn't liberal enough?????  That's a tough sell.  Perhaps stay home but that's about it.  meanwhile Ricky smells like burnt toast.

I only found out about Pennacchio from blogs.  We need more information about our alternatives before it's too late.  I've written a letter to the Morning Call (Lehigh Valley) and hope Democrats will wake up.  Casey would be a great disappointment.  I don't know if I could vote for him.  But I could never vote for Santorum.

The problem is that it is often difficult to tell Santorum and Casey apart, much to the consternation of Progressive Pennsylvania Democrats. Casey is anti-choice and supports over-turning Roe v Wade. He opposes stem-cell research; supported Congressional intervention in the Terri Schiavo case; endorsed the Supreme Court nomination of Samuel Alito; supports capital punishment (Santorum actually comes down on the opposite side of this issue); supported going to war in Iraq and opposes an exit strategy with a timetable; supports prayer in schools; supports the Patriot Act; opposes gun control et al. Many of the same large corporate PACs have contributed to both the Santorum and Casey campaigns... But the poll also indicates that the voters are largely ignorant of Casey's stand on the major issues

If Pennacchio wants to win, all of his media needs to be directed against both Santorum and Casey in the primary to show how he differs from both of them on so many issues. The campaign slogan can be something along the lines of "Time For A Real Change". For example, a 30 second commercial can have clips of each candidate stating a position, with Santorum and Casey sounding extremely similar and Pennacchio stating the different position. A commercial can list all of the groups which have contributed to both Santorum and Casey, with a tag line like "Do you want a Senator who represents you, or a Senator who represents these special interest?" Flyers can show the candidates' positions compared side-by-side on multiple issues.

If he wins the primary it might hurt Casey in the general election to be so closely identified with Santorum's brand of politics, but that's his problem for being a rightwing gasbag.
