Illinois Senate. The people of Illinois are fed up with both parties. The Republicans who used to be moderates are now in right-wing Palin-land. Witness candidates like Alan Keyes and Jim Oberweis. The Democrats are internally fueding and being relentlessly picked off in corruption scandals. There is wide-spread disgust here in "Stroger" County with decades of Democratic corruption and regressive sales and property taxes. The Republican Party is mired in a race to the right as they become increasingly irrelevant.

A high profile Progressive could win in a three way race or at least cause some reform. A vegan "Department of Peace" Kuchinich type would be buried in this inherent moderate state, but a populist with a solid practical background could do at least as well as Barkley in Minnesota (16%). This would put the Party on the map. The Green party is on the map, but have damaged their credibility with candidates such as Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney.

I would suggest that the Progressive Party be built from the ground up and not launch a Presidential candidate until it at least holds those 5 Senate and 25 House seats.

Maybe we should talk. I'm thinking about creating a 527 or a kind of ACT Blue, but not limited to dems. Would you support Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine guitarist and known leftist troublemaker) if he made a run, and was willing to commit a million of his own money? I think we should recruit Hollywood hard...

Not for Illinois. Entertainers are OK in other states, but for Illinois you want a businessman, a distinguished educator, renowned scientist, clean politician if you can find one (last one I knew was Paul Simon), high military officer, that sort of background. Like I said, a basically moderate state.

Tom Morello is a very intelligent man who could do just fine competing with all those "types" you mentioned earlier. But one of the tough things about this: who do we get to run? The reason I think we should recruit Hollywood is that they're charismatic and you don't have to work that hard to create name recognition. Arnold, the Body...celebrities can do very very well, especially articulate celebs like Tom Morello. The other aspect about this is money. Tom could raise several million dollars for his senate run. It isn't necessarily what you stand for. It's how well you can get your message across. How did Obama win Florida? He outspent McCain 35 million to 8 million. Here's a wet dream fantasy: Tom Morello raises 20 million dollars for an Illinois run and he probably wins. Again: You have until 2010. I'm thinking about going to one of his sites and asking him flat out...who do you have that has name recognition and can possibly raise several million dollars? Not to mention that he's a fine guitarist...I mean...

Actually, this is Tom Morello's bio:

He was born in Harlem, New York and grew up in Libertyville, Illinois. His mother, Mary Morello, is a founder of Parents For Rock And Rap, an anti-censorship group. His father was a Mau Mau guerilla, a Kenyan revolutionary who later was the first Kenyan delegate to the United Nations. Morello's uncle, Jomo Kenyatta, was the first elected president in Kenya.

In 1986 Morello graduated with honours from Harvard University with a degree in political science. He moved to L.A. with the intention of joining or starting a band. Already during his high school years, he had played in a band called Electric Sheep with Adam Jones, soon-to-be-guitarist for the experimental band, Tool. Morello introduced Jones to some of his future band-mates and was responsible for the emergence of Tool in its first formation.

And check out this interview. I would feel very comfortable backing this person in a debate. And I wouldn't be wondering if he would get us out of Iraq...
