Bob Woodward, Lost in Cronyism?

by Larry Johnson
Sun Oct 30th, 2005 at 11:15:19 PM EST

by Larry C. Johnson (bio below)

How is it that one of the most revered investigative reporters of our generation is such a dunce when it comes to outing a CIA officer? If you had a chance to watch Woodward's "dazzling" performance on Larry King Live this past Thursday, you would have been treated to the spectacle of incurious Bob dismissing the leaking of a CIA officer's identity as gossip run amuck. Nothing more, nothing less. Yep, nothing to report here, move along.

Yet, for those more in touch with the inner workings of Washington, Woodward's vain attempt to downplay this matter sure smacks of someone trying to protect his sources. In a recent Washington Post puff piece on Lewis "Scooter" Libby we are told that Scooter:

attends the weekly gathering of Bush's top economic advisers and -- according to Bob Woodward's book "Plan of Attack," about the Bush administration's run-up to the Iraq war -- was one of two non-principals who attended National Security Council meetings with the president after Sept. 11, 2001 (the other was Condoleezza Rice's then-deputy, Stephen Hadley).

Isn't that special? Is it possible that Scooter has been a source that helped Bob Woodward get his inside scoops?

Nah, I am sure it is a coincidence. A few years back our intrepid investigative reporter Bob Woodward was on the cutting edge of information about the Clinton Administration and China. In the spring of 1998 Bob broke the story that China was trying to influence the U.S. election through carefully placed campaign contributions. Don Lambro of the Washington Times said:

Continued below:

The disclosure is a big breakthrough in the 18-month-old investigation, because for the first time someone has shown a paper trail of illegal campaign money from China to the United States that was intended to influence our elections. This was the story that Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward first broke and that Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson dug into before he was forced to end his hearings in December because of a one-year deadline that recalcitrant Democrats had demanded.

So, which now infamous chief of staff to a Vice President was working as a counsel to a Hill committee that happened to be investigating this story? Gee, does Scooter Libby sound familiar?

With that background let us consider some of Bob's "investigatory" insight into the outing of a clandestine CIA officer. Here's a doozy:

WOODWARD: . . .Now there are a couple of things that I think are true. First of all this began not as somebody launching a smear campaign that it actually -- when the story comes out I'm quite confident we're going to find out that it started kind of as gossip, as chatter and that somebody learned that Joe Wilson's wife had worked at the CIA and helped him get this job going to Niger to see if there was an Iraq/Niger uranium deal.

And, there's a lot of innocent actions in all of this but what has happened this prosecutor, I mean I used to call Mike Isikoff when he worked at the "Washington Post" the junkyard dog. Well this is a junkyard dog prosecutor and he goes everywhere and asks every question and turns over rocks and rocks under rocks and so forth.

Let's see. Curious Bob is no longer curious. Nope. Nothing to report here. In fact, his remarks parrot Republican talking points. Just a coincidence, I'm sure.

Of course, maybe Bob just is not paying attention to what is going on at the Washington Post or has abidicated his duty to break news in the paper. While on the Larry King show this week, Woodward announced:

They did a damage assessment within the CIA, looking at what this did that Joe Wilson's wife was outed. And turned out it was quite minimal damage. They did not have to pull anyone out undercover abroad. They didn't have to resettle anyone. There was no physical danger of any kind and there was just some embarrassment.

Great news Bob, except there was this other little headline in Saturday's Washington Post:

CIA Yet to Assess Harm From Plame's Exposure

So, either you had real news and didn't share it with your reporters or you are just making this up? I personally suspect the latter. I have spoken to some people who are in a position to know. There has been damage. My source, however, declined to share classified information.

Let's face it. It is a sickening sight when a man who got his start in Washington as a take-no-prisoners investigative journalist has decided to join the prisoners and excuse their conduct as they destroy national security assets and lie, bald face lie, to the American people. Heck of a job, Bobby!

I think an investigative journalist would have at least mentioned the factor of Porter Goss now being at the head of that agency.

He should have at least asked for a copy of the Helgerson Report to take home and study. Goss' actions give the appearance of burying, discounting or protecting someone's interest. Most people assume it's the Bush administration he's protecting.

Maybe Woodward, Libby and Miller can team up and do some screenplays for Fox.

One more media mannequin who's destroyed his own credibility and now has nothing left to say that's relevant to to any truths that might be valuable to the public.

The tragedy of the decline of the MSM is a huge blow against the very fabric of our democracy, possibly even more destructive in the long run than even the war and the looting of the treasury is.

Denial is our most dangerous adversary.

Yes...totally agree. I saw him on Larry King the other night and thought What happened to my Mothers Hero. I bought his last Bush book based on her opinion of him. He even went so far as to say that he knows that the outing of Valorie Plame has NOT caused damage to the CIA. WTF. I didn't know that Woodward ran the CIA and could speak for them. Totally opposite of what the 60 minute piece said tonight. Fuck him. Pathetic Lying Bastard. This CHENEYTRAITOR AFFAIR is a non partisan issue. Every American should be outraged that our own Government outed a CIA Agent. This is not about Rich, Poor, Dem, Repub, Right, Left, Black, White, this is about our Country and the foundation that it is built upon. It is about the Truth. How Bush, as the President of the United States has not come out and demanded on finding the truth is beyone me. He should bring the entire group of people involved, the WHIG's and everyone mentioned in the Indictment, lock them all in the White House and not let anyone leave until he gets to the truth. This has nothing to do with Politics and everything to do with AMERICA. This reminds me of all the thousands of people desperate and dying in New Orleans and the Bush Administration does nothing about it until he was forced to deal with it. BUSH MUST BE IMPEACHED. WE Must run him out of office. I AM FURIOUS after just seeing the 60 minutes piece. Speaking of Pieces..Bob Woodward is a pathetic, lying, Steaming piece of HORSESHIT and if I was Bernstein I would never be seen in public with Woodward again. Anything to stay chummy and stay on the A list of the elite Political Party crowd. He used to fight for the Truth, now he does everything in his power to squash it. Great Dairy btw/ Sorry for my Rant..but I have had.

"60 Minutes" tonight -- in an otherwise very helpful story on Valerie Wilson and why it's so wrong to "out" an agent -- also said that there's been no report from the CIA, although the CIA has briefed some members of Congress on the intel committees.

They also blew their cover of Brewster Jennings and associates, which was the job that V.Plame used as her job. There was more damage than we know.

more than we will ever know. I have also been wondering if they did this not only to get back at Wilson but (my tinfoil hat is placed firmly on my head as I type) they learned something else about Plame and her work in the CIA. Call me nuts, but this administration is so Evil and Cheney is so Horrible that it really make my mind wander. Is there something else Plame was doing as a Spy that could have helped Bring Bush/Cheney Down?

I read somewhere that Plame's work also involved keeping an eye on oil producers and their esimates on reserves.

Heck of a job, Bobby!

Let me add one other possibility:

This guy's claim to fame is Watergate. John Dean, one of the major Watergate figures, says the current Plamegate (or whatever its called) is actually MUCH BIGGER than Watergate. Does Bobby have to make sure that Plamegate never outshines his Watergate -- and therefore his claim to fame????? After all, nobody ever remembers the second place team, which is what Watergate will be relegated to once Plamegate is fully played out.

"How is it that one of the most revered investigative reporters of our generation is such a dunce when it comes to outing a CIA officer?"

How is it?

Because the whole Watergate thing was a put up job from the get-go.

And he was part of it.

You revere the wrong people.

This man changes sides as it occurs to him to do so.

He's a domestic spook. Possibly a double or TRIP{LE domestic spook, working for those who can give him the most of what he wants. Which is success.

If you saw Seymour HERSH running this game, you might write that about him.

But Woodward?

Naaaahhhh...

They knew

««  click on pic for resignation statements by POTUS and VP Cheney  »»

Yeah, Scooter, lie to the FBI, your ass gets indicted

Overlooked in the current discussion.

Go to page 5 of the indictment. Top of the page, item #9.

On or about June 12, 2003, LIBBY was advised by the Vice President of the United States that Wilson's wife worked at the Central Intelligence Agency in the Counterproliferation Divison. LIBBY understood that the Vice President had learned this information from the CIA.

This is a crucial piece of information. the Counterproliferation Division (CPD) is part of the CIA's Directorate of Operations, i.e., not Directorate of Intelligence, the branch of the CIA where 'analysts' come from, but where the spies come from.

Libby's a long time national security hand. He knows exactly what CPD is and where it is. So does Cheney. They both knew. It's right there in the indictment.

Letting the White House Walk?
By Robert Parry  ◊ October 30, 2005

As an outsider to Washington, special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald appears to have misunderstood the finer points of how national security classifications work when a secret is as discrete - and sensitive - as the identity of an undercover CIA officer.

Under the rules of classification, however, to see such secrets an official must not only have a top-secret clearance but also special code-word clearance that grants access to a specific compartment governed by strict need-to-know requirements.

In both the Libby indictment and a hour-long press conference on Oct. 28, Fitzgerald showed no indication he understood how extraordinary it was for White House officials to be bandying about the name of a covert CIA officer based on the flimsy rationale that she was married to an ex-diplomat who had been sent on a fact-finding trip to Niger.

I saw some of that segment. Sometimes I wonder if Woodward is catering to a false sense of objectivity. I say "false sense" because there is this notion these days in the media that all stories must be presented from a liberal and a conservative perspective. Thus, Woodward is in a way pretending to take the conservative, Faux News angle seriously even if he knows it is not. Why? Well maybe for the reasons you mentioned, but also perhaps to avoid being thought of as liberal and instead as an "objective" journalist. He does like to sell books..

Going back to that two-sides-to-the-story thing. Even when DeLay was indicted, the MSM was asking: did DeLay do anything wrong or is this just the Democrats being political. I mean, this was a situation where it is just a fact, just news what happened to DeLay. Sure there are political implications, but it was ridiculous how they tried to fit it in the format. Anyway, my point is that the panel is set up for this format, and Woodward to play that role of "Devil's Advocate".

Nixon was a supporter of the Rogers peace plan for the Mideast.  The Israel lobby was never happy with that.  As the Watergate crisis was pushed along, Kissinger replaced the Rogers plan with the "strategic asset" of Israel.  For that reason there was more of an urge by the MSM to smear Nixon at that time then there is today with the current administration.  One doesn't have to like Nixon specifically to realize that Watergate was handled the way it was for reasons unstated.
