More Democratic Slogans (POLL!). Vote and Discuss

by NeoLiberal
Mon Oct 31st, 2005 at 12:20:09 AM EST

Recently, Chris Bowers posted a story on new Democratic Party slogans here. Apparently, two or three slogans are being considered in the party leadership circles:

House Democratic leaders are holding a closed-door meeting with members of their caucus this afternoon to discuss a new slogan for the 2006 midterm elections: "Together, We Can Do Better" or "Together, America Can Do Better," according to Democratic sources.

Although aides say the slogan has yet to be finalized and is still up for debate, it has already been in frequent use by Democratic leaders on both sides of the Capitol for several weeks.(...)

The catchphrase is not new to political observers, who will remember that an earlier reincarnation, "America Can Do Better," was a slogan in the campaign of presidential aspirant Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), although his main theme was "A Stronger America."(...)

Academic George Lakoff, marketing expert Jack Trout and software entrepreneur John Cullinane have periodically weighed in on the project.

There is a FP poll on two of these slogans.

Although I don't mind these slogans, I don't find any of them assertive or compelling enough. So, I compiled a list, and a selection of them are included in the poll below.

Please RECOMMEND, as slogans are important, and good ones do work (if a compatible agenda goes with the slogan), and we must discuss them and let the party leadership hear our suggestions.

Crossposted at myDD, daily Kos. Please visit the latter for many good ideas given.

Here is the poll (shared across blogs). Remember that this is a poll of which slogan will likely work best, and not necessarily what you like best.

Which Democratic Party slogan would you recommend?
Together, We Can Do Better
America Can Do Better
Common Sense, Common Good, Common Future
Progress, Prosperity, Future, Destiny
Fighting for America's Future
Fighting for American Prosperity
The American Promise
For a Better and Brighter Future
Common Sense, Common Good, Common Destiny
I like pie

Please discuss these slogans and suggest others. The readers are requested to give slogans (from the comments below) that they like 4's and no ratings otherwise. That way we can judge some popular suggestions and perhaps add some of them to our list for a runoff poll later.

Here is the list from my scratch pad, which has a few more slogans and additional permutations and combinations:

Together, We Can Do Better
America Can Do Better
We Will Do Better
Fighting for American Prosperity
Fighting for America's Future
Fighting for America's Destiny
Let us Rebuild American Prosperity
Rebuilding American prosperity
Better Future for All
For a Better and Brighter Future
Shine America, Anew!
Shine America, Again!
Our Common Future, Our Common Destiny
Progress, Prosperity, Future, Destiny
Common Good, Common Destiny
Common Good, Common Sense, Common Future
The American Promise
Let Us Make American Work Again.

Better than what?
This still sounds lame to the outside world and elsewhere, NOT a good idea!

And the "together. . .better" slogans are not optimistic. They remind me of the "We try harder" campaign by Avis many years ago, which was intended to be humorous - but these aren't intended to be  funny as that one was.

I don't like the implicit militarism in the "Fighting. . " slogans, either.

Better to have something positive, proactive but not aggressive, e.g. variations on a couple above:

Fulfill America's Promise
America: Common Sense for the Common Good

"Common Sense for the Common Good"

I like that one!

Thanks for both your suggestions. They're excellent.

Fulfilling America's Promise
America: Common Sense for the Common Good

As for for, you know, there have been many a "good fight" and worthy struggle. so it isn't always a militarisitc word, IMHO.

I agree. If we weren't in the middle of a war that was so  ill gotten, I would not mind so much.

It is difficult to come up with a slogan that has a positive impact and can be used as a rallying cry.

I have trouble with the ones that use "brighter," "promise," "prosperity," and "better."

Reading about economic conditions, environmental conditions, foreign policy, etc., IMO, the above types of words bring Mary Poppins to mind: "That's a pie crust promise. Easily made. Easily broken."

Though I like "community," the slogans that use "common," can be distorted to the dreaded and still feared "communism." "Common," can also be interpreted as "ordinary" which, again my opinion, we are cultural indoctrinated to find unacceptable.

Sorry to be so critical. I do appreciate your efforts cause this is important.

My suggestion:

"Democrats: Doing what's right"

  1. I like getting the word "right" back in my vocabulary! Sort of a "Take back the right."

  2. It allows some individual interpretation

  3. It reminds us of our sense of fair play, generosity, etc.

Thanks for the thoughtful topic and your concern.
