Secret Senate Session: Right-Wing Blogosphere Meltdown

by catnip
Tue Nov 1st, 2005 at 11:33:55 PM EST

Reacting to today's push by Harry Reid and Dick Durbin to force a closed session of the senate on pre-Iraq war intelligence, the right-wing blogosphere predictably had a meltdown when they realized their dear leaders had been outmaneuvered.

I scanned their sites so you don't have to:

Captain’s Quarters:
Headline: Democrats Deny Open Government To American Electorate

threw a tanrum over Joe Wilson, emptiness of Democrats, both in head and heart, cheap political stunts, (on Libby’s indictments) the only indictment he could muster was one in which a very stupid and probably criminal act by a single person could be verified, stupid beyond belief, tired of their crybaby, whining tactics, a big, heaping helping of pompous impotence, Reid has abused it for his petulant tantrums.

Powerline:
Headline: Bless the Dems

Presumably, Reid needed a closed door session to prevent the public from witnessing the spectacle of Democrats making fools out of themselves trying to explain the connection between that indictment and pre-war intelligence on Iraq…That the Dems see throwing a temper tantrum as a way to regain momentum, rather than as reminder to the public that they are unfit to govern, speaks volumes.

Michelle Malkin:
Democratic temper tantrum...Ok, so the Senate is open again after 2 hours locked down. Is it just me or does Sen. Frist seem shaken? I hope it's just me.

STOP the ACLU:
The only spotlight here is the one the democrats are desperately trying to get back into; Grasping at straws; The disappointment the democrats over the impact of indictment charges for “trying to lie about a crime that wasn’t even committed” have set them in a tail spin.

Blogs for Bush:
Democrats are losing it... part of the Democrats plan to retake the Senate by scandalizing Bush and the Republicans so that they can avoid offering any constructive ideas of their own.

(and, get a load of this!)

We haven't found WMDs in Iraq?

What about the 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium, the 1,500 gallons of chemical weapons agents, 17 chemical warheads containing cyclosarin (a nerve agent five times more deadly than sarin gas), over 1,000 radioactive materials in powdered form (meant for dispersal over populated areas), and roadside bombs loaded with mustard and "conventional" sarin gas... just to name a few things... Don't believe me? Get Richard Miniter's new book...

The Strata-Sphere:
Maybe he [Dick Durbin] wants to recycle his Nazi nonsense - but doesn’t want the press in on it.

We all know that if the Republicans would have pulled this off, their right-wing shills would have been hailing their leaders as: "brilliant!", "powerful!", "stunning!", "cajone-driven!"

Okay - maybe not that last one, but you get the picture.

All I can say is, "Alito who?"

(I can't believe I napped through the whole thing!)

The CNN crawl at the top of the hour while reporting on this news showed a story about "frozen beef panties" contaminated by e coli. I've e-mailed Crooks and Liars to see if they have the video.

She's the first one I thought of. lol

I don't know how tasty frozen beef panties might be and, frankly, I don't want to!

I was out of the house for much of the day and didn't find out about all this until I went out to lunch with my daughter. We were at a Mexican restaurant for lunch, and the TV at the bar was tuned to CNN with a big BREAKING NEWS tag. I had to get up to figure out what was going on.

I missed the part about the contaminated beef panties, though. Probably just as well, all things considered.

Guess everyone got the RNC faxed "Dems throw a tantrum memo". And for me, it's about time the Dems pitched a fit.  It was worth it for the apoplectic look on Frist's face.

Does this mean that our Senators have decided to fight, and if they lose the fight, it is better than rolling over and playing dead?  (hope so!)  This way we at least have a chance.

Wow...based on the info you posted I am betting Bush and his numbers won't go below 35%, I would bet there are still 35% of cool aid drinkers still think they found WMD's, even though the entire world has admitted there weren't any there, include the grand Chimp himself. They all need to be put in jail. There should be a law against Propaganda. There are so many Baghdad Bobs in the Republican party, they should be known from now on as the Party of Baghdad Bob. I think this was really intended to show Frist that the Democrats are capable of closing down the Senate if they try to pull off the Nuclear Option.  It is also intended to show that they can change the subject just like Bush can.  It was a bold move, and it obviously caught the Republicans off guard.  I was pissed when Harry Reid became Minority Leader, but I've changed my mind.  He is gutsy and innovative.  Today he gave the Republicans a right hook to the jaw, and they are still on the mat trying to figure out how to get up.  They no longer have the public support to try bullying the Democrats.

I think this demonstrates that the nuclear option is also doomed, and if Frist threatens to invoke it again the Democrats will call his bluff.  Alito is heading for defeat in a filibuster.

Good points. Interesting that Reid is so unpredictable too. Just when Dem supporters start to lose faith in him (like they did over the Miers' nomination), he makes his mark again.

He's a quiet storm.

I was never mad at Reid for Miers.  I think he was playing chess, knowing that Bush could have given us much worse (aka Alito).  Reid is a smart cookie and I don't underestimate anything he does or says.  He clearly thinks several moves ahead of his opponent.

Spector is the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and he's pro-choice. Plus, there are continued rumblings of dissension in the Republican ranks, and I'll be very surprised if any Democrats vote to send Alito to the floor.

So my analysis is, he never makes it out of committee. I'm guessing it'll end up a 9-9 deadlock at best.

it almost makes me want to have a temper tantrum that over 2000 US troops were murdered and more than 10,000 maimed and upwards of 100,000 innocent Iraqi citizens maimed or killed and their country destroyed for the sake of a morally bankrupt and criminal war.

almost makes me want to have a temper tantrum.
