Curt Weldon's Deep Throat and Wild Fantasies

by susanhu
Sat Jun 11th, 2005 at 01:02:07 PM EST

This is BooMan's bailiwick (geographically and otherwise), but Laura Rozen's post at War & Piece -- about Rep. Curt Weldon, who's campaigning to chair the House Homeland Security Committee (he's currently vice-chair) -- intrigued me:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usCheck out my new piece from the Prospect about the Pennsylvania Republican's Iran intelligence source, who Weldon has been pushing to get on the CIA payroll. It's a follow up to the piece Jeet Heer and I reported in April on yet another back channel between the Iran Contra arms dealer Manoucher Ghorbanifar and US officials. Weldon is supposed to appear on Meet the Press Sunday [schedule] to discuss his new book, and you'll definitely want to read our pieces as background to that. Supporters of discredited intelligence sources such as Ahmad Chalabi - incredibly - blame the CIA for not doing a good enough job of vetting the lying defectors Chalabi provided to the US intelligence community. Here's an example where the CIA did its job and did weed out some hucksters on the take. [emphases mine]

And who can't help but be even more intrigued when they read the following from the Washington Post:

Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), whose flair for drama has included lugging around a replica of a suitcase-size nuclear bomb, alleges in a new book that Iran is:
  • hiding Osama bin Laden
  • is preparing terrorist attacks against the United States
  • has a crash program to build an atomic bomb and
  • as a Shiite country, is the chief sponsor of what is a largely Sunni-directed insurgency in Iraq.

In "Countdown to Terror: The Top-Secret Information that Could Prevent the Next Terrorist Attack on America . . . and How the CIA Has Ignored It," Weldon accuses the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and his colleagues on the House and Senate intelligence committees of ignoring his trove of information.

The WaPo copy editor must have howled his head off over that blowgun lead.

So, where Laura Rozen at War & Piece defends the CIA, Weldon condemns it.

And, in her article for The Prospect, Ms. Rosen further exposes Weldon's turgid fantasies:

Countdown to Terror, ... Weldon's sensationalistic new book about his personal struggle to combat the Iranian terrorism threat despite the alleged resistance of the CIA, is based entirely on the Pennsylvania Republican's freelance communications with a secret source he code-named "Ali." Much of Weldon's book ... consists of reproduced pages of comically overwrought "intelligence" memos faxed from the Iranian émigré’s Paris location to Weldon’s office between 2003 and 2004.

Here's what the WaPo says about "Ali":

These secrets, [Weldon] says, come from "an impeccable clandestine source," ... code-name[d] "Ali," an Iranian exile living in Paris [and] close associate of Manucher Gorbanifar. Gorbanifar is a well-known Iranian exile whom the CIA branded as a fabricator during the 1980s but who was used by the Reagan White House as a middleman for the arms-for-hostages deal with Iran.

Switch Iran for Iraq, and Gorbanifar for Ahmed Chalabi -- an Iraqi exile whose claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction were distrusted by the CIA but were embraced by the Defense Department and the White House -- and Weldon's book reads like the conservative argument for the invasion of Iraq.

Most fascinating yet, Ms. Rozen has unmasked the mysterious "Ali":

[I]n an exclusive interview ... Weldon's "Ali" -- who was identified in an April article by me and Jeet Heer as Fereidoun Mahdavi, a frail, elderly former minister of commerce in the shah’s government and a longtime business associate of Iran-Contra arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar -- said he was stunned and perplexed to learn that Weldon had used his information to write a book [and] never even told him about the book.

Mahdavi also said that the bulk of the information ... was originally sourced from none other than Ghorbanifar, the subject of a rare CIA “burn notice” after the agency found him to be a "fabricator" more than two decades ago during the Iran-Contra affair.

“Many information that I have given to Weldon is coming from Ghorbanifar,” said Mahdavi. ... “Because Ghorbanifar used me, in fact, to pass that stuff because I know he has problems in Washington.”

[...................]

Several Iranian exile associates ... have told the Prospect that Mahdavi, living in reduced circumstances ... is in fact financially dependent on Ghorbanifar. They have been involved in various businesses together, from petroleum shipping to arms dealing to (more recently) intelligence peddling, since both washed up in Paris after the Iranian revolution in 1979.

"Although Mahdavi expresses understanding of the motives of his old pal and business partner Ghorbanifar," reports Ms. Rozen, "he says he is utterly baffled by Weldon’s decision to use his information as the foundation of a book that the congressman never once mentioned to him":

“I assume that if [Weldon] wanted to publish a book, I assure you I would have heard it,” Mahdavi said [in disbelief]. ...

[A]fter receiving a fax with a Congressional Quarterly article about Weldon’s forthcoming book and the amazon.com book description, Mahdavi spoke again in shock and anger.

“Someone is using me for their purposes,” he raged. “How is it possible that something like that book comes out and the people who publish it don’t inform me? ... [I]f you had not called me and told me there is a book coming out from Weldon, I would have never known about it. ... I am sure, there is a fight between all these [U.S. government] organizations, and they are using this issue and using me.”

"Among those who agree," says Ms. Rozen, "is the former senior CIA official who met with Mahdavi in response to Weldon’s pressure on the agency to accept the Mahdavi/Ghorbanifar information. The tale of 'Ali' suggests that the agency is assiduously seeking to weed out another fabricator like Ghorbanifar (or Iraqi fabulist Ahmad Chalabi) from corrupting U.S. intelligence information on Iran."

There's much more about the CIA's work in Ms. Rozen's new article.

And the WaPo reported that "Bill Murray, the former CIA station chief in Paris, said that, after interviewing Mahdavi on several occasions and investigating his claims, the CIA determined he was lying."

"'He peddled the same stories to several other governments,' Murray said. 'He is a fabricator'."

Meanwhile, what shall we do about these activist Congressmen who write blowsy books on fanciful intelligence?

I hope Tim Russert has read Ms. Rozen's articles.

this is perfect.  I love it.  Soj probably has a folder on Ghorbanifar.  I have also heard rumors that he might be involved in finacing some of the 9/11 conspiracy conventions.  I find that possibility more than a little intriguing.

I suppose this looney toon will be all over our freaken 'news' channels spouting this crap while once again real news is ignored....like 25 of our troops were killed in the last 7 days in Iraq, 2 or more in Afghanistan  not to mention the hundreds of Iraqi's and civilians killed or civilians from other countries also killed in Iraq this last week..war what war when Iran is such a threat, right?

Or even bush being interviewed on Fox several nights ago and the subject of Iraq didn't even fucken come up but apparently michael jackson did as it may be distracting from bush's social security message..am I disgusted and pissed, yeah I am and I should be used to it by now shouldn't I.

He's telling us what we want to hear. He must be telling the truth.

Besides, we must err on the side of caution (since, of course, we must err). We wouldn't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud now would we?

"There simply isn't a case that this is a peace-loving nation that wants to be left alone," national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said on CNN's "Late Edition With Wolf Blitzer."

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Vice President Dick Cheney accused Iran of moving aggressively to develop nuclear weapons over the past 14 months to add to their stockpile of chemical and biological arms.

"Increasingly, we believe that the United States may well become the target of those activities," Cheney said.

"And what we've seen recently that has raised our level of concern  ... is that they now are trying, through their illicit procurement network, to acquire the equipment they need to be able to enrich uranium" Cheney said.

Rice acknowledged that "there will always be some uncertainty" in determining how close Iran may be to obtaining a nuclear weapon but said, "We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud."

Go read the article!! Scary stuff!!!

Good grief Charlie Brown...if Rice is going to start spewing crap about Iran the least she could do is come up with some new phrases instead of the 'smoking gun/mushroom cloud' gambit...as that didn't work out to well for her the first time.(well it worked it just didn't turn out to be true)

I hope people this time around are really paying attention to what these idiots are saying and start thinking for themselves for a change.

I have a friend who's well acquainted with some of these characters.  She writes:

Manucher Ghorbifar was part of the "Octopus" that Danny Casolaro was tracking.

I laugh though at the CIA being upset with him, since he's been associated with William Casey, former head of the CIA. Sounds like another case of the analysts (agency white hats) vs. the covert operators (black hats).

I thought I had heard his name in conjuction with the Bush in Paris/October Surprise story, and had - here's a snippet:

Many sources agree that a conclusive series of meetings between Reagan-Bush and the Khomeini forces took place in Paris during the October 15-20 period, and there is little doubt that William Casey was present for these meetings. According to the account furnished by Richard Brenneke, there was a meeting at the Hotel Raphael in Paris at about noon on October 19, attended by George Bush, William Casey, Don Gregg, Manucher Gorbanifar and two unnamed Iranian officials. Brenneke says that there was a second meeting the same afternoon, with the same cast of characters, minus George Bush. Then there was a third meeting at the Hotel Florida the next day, October 20, this time attended by Casey, Gregg, Hashemi, Manucher Gorbanifar, Major Robert Benes of the French intelligence services, and one or two other persons.

From Modern History Project  - quoting from Webster Tarpley's unauthorized bio of George HW Bush.

Gorbanifer was also mentioned in Ollie North's notes:

Among the North notebooks released May 18 were those
reflecting the coverup began November, 25, 1986, when then-Attorney General Edwin Meese announced at a White House news briefing the sale of U.S. arms to Iran and diversion of the profits to the contras. Much has been written about the notations North jotted on one page of his steno pad that day.  "Call from JMP," North wrote, referring to his boss, National Security Adviser John M. Poindexter.  The page continues: "VP call Peres ... Discovered contra connection ... wd be best if Israel wd accept that they were aware that some funds were diverted ... Put it off on Gorbanifar [sic]."  Thus, North suggests that Vice President Bush telephoned Israeli Defense Minister Shimon Peres to enlist his help in the cover story pinning the diversion on Iranian businessman and arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar. SkepticFiles.org

Why anyone would trust that guy is beyond me. But that's what I mean re the "Reality Gap' - there are those who live in reality, and those who are trying hard to create another one as if belief and lies will bring it into existence...!

My friend adds:

Here's a reference to Casolaro and Gorbanifar as well:

"Noted almost immediately was the shadowy presence of Adnan Khashoggi in the background of the Diana death. Khashoggi was Dodi Fayed's uncle and a well-known broker of military hardware deals in volving Saudi Arabia stretching back to the 1970s. [4] A few days before his death, Casolaro took his friend Ben Mason down into his basement and proudly showed him several photocopied pages documenting contra arms transfers involving Khashoggi and a partner, Manucher Ghorbanifar. Casolaro even had copies of BCCI checks drawn on Khashoggi's accounts.

"Mason later reported that Casolaro was elated over a source he was about to meet in West Virginia, someone Casolaro described to Virginia McCullough as being involved in guns-and-drugs transfers. Casolaro told a fellow hotel guest, Mike Looney, that he was meeting with an Arab."
