Froggy Bottom Cafe? Name our Center (Vote)

by diane101
Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 11:26:46 AM EST

Hi Fellow Boomers!!

Well now is the time to vote on the name of our brand new commnuity center, just built by all the loving hands of Booman Tribune. Isn't it lovely, look around you notice all the amenities.  Pool Table, ping pong, frog pond to take a dip in, snack bar over to the side and every Friday the Happy Hour will be running with Cabin Girl as host and Dammit Janet behind the bar with her trusty blender at the ready.
Of course Friday will be dance night as well, so bring your dancing shoes, we will be led in a 'square dance' by Shirlstars, I am sure.

*Update: These are the sign ups as of 4:29 PM, PDT* Now we need sign ups to Host the diary of the day at our community center.
So far we have
Cabin Girl: Friday
Diane101: Wed
Kansas: Thur.
babaloo: Mon.
I don't remember who else said they would host a day, we lost all that in computer glitch, so you will have to sign up again, we now have 5 days open for hosting.
Later on when this gets going we may change that or substitute names for different days, let's see how it goes.
If you do sign up for a day and can't do it every week you can always ask someone else to host for the day.
I am trying to think of everything to put in here, but I am sure I have forgotten something.
Aloha wants a once a month Birthday theme, and I am hoping she will volunteer for that one, it could be on a Wed. and then can subsitute for my Wed. diary.
So let's discuss, but meanwhile come on in and have some fun and have some good visits with your friends gathered here.

Now all we need to do is name this place.  Following is a list of names suggestions as posted on the previous diary.  My personal favorite is Froggy Bottoms Cafe, and I think the tie in with Foggy Bottoms, a la Washington, DC, is very apropos.
So lets vote and by the way, the joint is open for business.
Don't forget to Recommend this diary

Darwins Pad or Senior Frogs?
by Chamonix1 on Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 11:48:23 AM EST
I see we have a write in, well folks consider that name too, if enough votes come in for the  write in candidates, that could end up being the name.
I couldn't add any more names to the poll as that was the exact number of spots for poll.

Thanks aloha, it will be good to know tribbers won't have to drive themselves home on Firday night after a night of song and dance and drink.  Of course lemonade and ice tea will be served as well.  I don't drink either, so I can be another designated driver in case you have too many to drive yourself.  After all the trip may be long, long way to Europe to pick up passanger, or we could just drop them off at Euro, Trib.

I must have missed the discussion about this.  Exactly what is it, Diane?  Sounds a litte like the Welcome Wagon diaries.....right?
by Second Nature (denn1214 at gmail) on Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 11:57:08 AM EST
See the community Center diary on Rec. list, that is where we talked about this yesterday and today, of course a lot of comments and names were lost in the glitch.
The idea of this was based on many folks were just talking back and forth to each other on the WW diaries, and this one will be used for talking to each other etc. as disucssed in previous diary.  we love to talk to each other so I thought this would be a good way.  Seems like everyone agrees so far.
I was thinking of keeping the WW diaries for just the welcomes.....That way it is easier to grab up the bio data for preserving, etc.
I also suggested the Cafe's be used for conflict resolution if the need arise, rather than fighting something out on a thread as we sometimes do on the rare occasions we fight.

Hi, Diane101!

I said I'd be delighted to host now and then, but can you tell us what a host does? Wears green?  Eats flies?  Croaks?  I hope not croaking. . .we'd go through hosts awfully fast!

Does it take any kind of computer skill beyond what it takes to diary or post a comment?

My Website

by kansas on Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 01:44:46 PM EST
kansas, hosting just means to do the diary and takes no special skills, other than what posting a diary does.  so would you like to do one day of the week or be on a floating basis where if one is needed you will do it.
Once you are the host, you can wear green if you wish, but I don't know about croaking, I suppose some will croak, but I hope it is the good kind.
BTW, Cabin girl is down for Fridays
I am down for Wed.
5 days are still open....who wants to pick a day..

Ok you are down for Thurs....As to opening and closing time, I would say just post in the morning, whatever is convenient for you and then you don't have to worry about closing time....it will close by itself.
Of course and stragglers might have to be 86'd.  LOL
I am watching Connected coast to coast on Msnbc and I am just furious with Monica Crowley. She is such an idiot and shut down any discussion of this "illegal war" with the statement, "that's blowing smoke, there is no truth to that and you just can't say that on air".... I wonder how much Bushco is paying her to speak untruths to people.

Gee I can't remember the man's name but he was trying to say things about downing street memo, about illegal war, how we needed to get out of Iraq because of that and because US being there was fueling the insurgency.  Another guest said no way, we are not fueling the insurgency, it's really winding down, and that guy she let speak and didn't interrupt.  she is always on the defensive about Bush and was involved somehow in his campaign I believe, she is avowed Rep.
I cannot stand anything about her, neither the way she speaks or thinks.  Makes me mad because I like Ron Reagan, and would like to hear him, but not her.  He has even gotten into it with her as he did today, but she talks more and faster and wouldn't shut her mouth..Yucks to her!!!!!!!!.

Sounds like an Anne Coulter Jr. huh? I am so sick of the right wing pundits that have no manners and can only talk over the guests when they disagree with the pundit. Shows lack of respect for others opinions. Why do they even bother to have opposing point of view guests on? So they can say fair and balanced? What a load of BS.

Is logic dead?

Where is the forum for those of who are the "I'll blow your damn revenooer butt off my porch if you keep trying to take my stuff" type of feminist?

poeople giving out ones to women who state their opinion too strongly.

Bam101 told me he didn't like my attitude and so he was giving me 1s.  ROFL.  Then he said he was an avid reader of abortion threads and that is why he kept happening to be on the same threads (where he never commented) where I was posting to give me the 1s.
But I knew he is full of crap because he did the same thing on my diaries that had nothing to do with abortion.  He basically hates strong women.

Don't even get me started on the right to privacy debate.  What is so hard to understand that in a woman's clinic on the day they are doing abortions, your right to have your boyfriend in the group recovery room with you, is trumped by the privacy rights of the other women next to you?  What if your loved one is some one they know from work?

Some some guy says basically "well maybe if they are ashamed they should reconsider having the abortion".
and the people telling personal stories that never happened to them......

ugh

Teresa - If you want to start the forum, I'll volunteer to play mediator, diplomat or bouncer. I've just told someone that I'm armed with an olive branch, and I'm prepared to use it - ('don't make me smack you with this thing'). Given the never-ending-ness of the topic, it would be interesting to see if we could develop a way to discuss it here without ugliness, anger and foul play with ratings. A ratings-free diary - 'in order to play, you must turn off ratings', or trips to the community center for penalties.....  hmmm...

I once led a mutiny in a quick shopper coping with traffic leaving the beach.

It was the first stop after construction delays. The line to the women's room snaked all the way around the store. The men (sigh) zipped in and out.

Talking to the very pregnant woman in front of me about the ridiculousness of the situation, I moved to wait outside the door to the men's room (and she followed me). When the last of the men came out, we cheered! And took our turns. (I invited the very pregnant woman to go ahead of me!)

Men coming into the store had to wait in line - behind us - the surprise on some faces was priceless.

Now if we could have agreed to share "flushes," that would have been even better.

How about generic, no flush, composting toilets? And everybody cleans up after themselves!

Good for you--but I can't believe anyone, male or female, was making a pregnant woman wait to go to the bathroom!

We have friends that live in an intentional community and have a composting toilet.  It takes getting used to when you're acculturated differently, but I definitely believe in the concept.

Love that screen name, btw!  Tampopo is such a wonderful film.

I literally LOLed at that!  Good stuff.  Who'da thunk the Rice pic would be more snarling and scary than the Coulter one?

Oh, and speaking of Coulter, this Kansas City DJ named "Afentra" did such an awesome phone interview with her.  She started out lulling her into complacency, and pretty soon she was asking "Ann, do you really believe your own rhetoric?" and "Ann, let me read you something, and you tell me if it was written by you, or David Duke."  At this point, Ann wisely saw that she needed to get out of there ASAP, and mumbled some lame sarcastic quip and hung up.  As she did so, Afentra was screaming, "wait, Ann, I didn't get to ask you about that Adam's apple, you trannie bitch!"  I couldn't believe I was listening to corporate radio, especially considering they replayed it over and over, LOL.  It was so so good--I can only hope she later heard about the last bit.

Hey, come play.

(pronounced sow-na - as in female pig) We have contributed so few words to the English language that at least the correct pronunciation could be retained. Don't get me started on Björn Borg and all the other mis-pronunciations. But I digress....

The sauna, like the native american sweat lodge, is for the cleansing of the body and the mind. It is also a place without shame. All Finnish kids grow up going naked to the sauna with their family. Most family saunas are mixed. Nakedness is nothing special. It leads to openess.

Mixed saunas are not common from pre-puberty onwards, but not unheard of among close friends and relatives. Even if men and women do not sauna together, they may run naked to the lake for a swim in view of the others.

I don't know what women talk about in the sauna, but with men it's usually very open. If you have a problem, the sauna is the place to talk about it.

My mom, who is of American Indian (Omaha) descent on her mother's side, has used sweatlodges with the Anishanabe of northern MN, and gone naked into the snow after.  I have only used saunas, and only done the cold shower bit (often followed by another session in the sauna).

I remember a Swedish truck driver I hitched a ride with, whose family's house I ended up staying at, had a great sauna.  (He reported not being able to keep up with the Finns, though, unlike you.)  Now, his perfect English came from having a British father.  What about you?  As a few people have noted, you've got a pretty good sense of humour, and that amazes me if English is your second language.  I think of myself as pretty good at French, for instance, but I am so far from being able to make someone laugh (intentionally, that is) in French, even though I think I'm reasonably droll in my native tongue.

I had a Swedish brother-in-law for a while.  Kinda weird, how you can "lose" family members without a death occurring, LOL.

Okay, I'll stop rambling about Scandinavia now...

I'm English, arrived here in Finland 1974. I always tell people I got frostbite of the brain the first winter and I've been too stupid to leave since.

As you can detect from my comments, I love Finland. The people, the closeness of Nature, the hi-tech, the women. No volcanoes, no earthquakes, no poisonous spiders, no crime, gender equality, salary equality (about 1:15 max). High taxes of course, but we get our money's worth. Unlimited clean water. Broadband everywhere (I'm actually in the garden now with the airport upstairs)

And in Finland a handshake is still a deal.

Oh, somehow I thought you were in Sweden, sorry.  I guess because you referred to going mano a mano against a Finn (actually suomilainen right?) in the sauna.

I never saw any other part of Finland, but I loved the week I spent in Helsinki, staying with a couple of brothers I met my first day there.  So true about the high tech, and the really cool way they design all that compact kitchen stuff.  Pretty wild, too, that the cop cars and taxis are, IIRC, Porsches and Mercedes.

They definitely beat the world hands down on the whole gender equality stuff (isn't the parliament actually more than 50% female?).  And it's the heritage of radical socialist Finns in northern Minnesota that gives that region such a great left wing tradition for a rural white area.

Something else I thought fascinating about Finland (I was there in 1990, at a transitional point) was how it had that unique status of being more or less a Warsaw Pact country in its being part of the Soviet military sphere, yet it was the only such country that was totally left alone to pursue a Western, free democratic society.

I'm often in Sweden. My two daughters are perfect in Swedish, English and Finnish. And I work mostly with Finland-Svensk (People in Finland with Swedish as their first language)

Parliament is not quite 50/50 more like 60/40 though rising at each election. I would have to check the figures.

Soviet military involvement ended in the Sixties - they had a military area on a small peninsula west of Helsinki as part of War Reparations. Since then, until early 90's, a very neutral policy toward East. Now much more independent. Lot of bonding going on nowadays with Baltic States - they are great vibrant places to visit. Finns not so keen on joining NATO, but are staunch UN supporters and provide proportionately a lot of peacekeepers. We try to be friends with everyone, but the US is getting a very bad press of late.

You reminded me, mentioning the "handshake is a deal" thing, of something else I thought really cool about Helsinki.  When there's some kind of construction or other traffic foulup, they are all so damned polite and selfless, it makes the rest of the world look bad, LOL.  They just seem to feel it would be better to let someone else go than to try to grab their chance.  So the opposite of the NYC area, where I lived for a while--there you've got to be aggressive and stick the corner of your car into the smallest gap, or you'll never get in.  (Though I do think New Yorkers and northern New Jerseyans are garrulous and friendly in their own way.  People in Atlanta not only won't let you in, they're assholes about it.)

I love a good sauna.  There are about seven million things I've planned to buy When I Become a Teacher (hopefully, in about a year), and I surely won't be able to afford all of them.  But a sauna is definitely high on the list, especially since it will (one hopes) raise my property value and not be just an extravagant expense.  But boy, I loved the saunas I took when I was travelling through Sweden and Finland.  They just don't get hot enough here in the States (except, again, in some parts of northern MN).  Right around 85-90 Celsius (185-194 Fahrenheit) is mahvellous for me, though I know some Finns in particular like them as hot as 100!

Me too - around 80-85 is good. When you throw the 'löyly' on the stones, the temperature goes up anyway. But I've also been in 100 C many times - you need really controlled breathing in order not to burn the inside of your nose!

I was once in a sauna with a Finnish general who had stoked it up to a hundred, and was trying to demonstrate how tough the Finns were compared with these 'foreigners'. He threw a lot of water. I beat him by about 3 seconds. He ran out and jumped in the lake first. After that he was my pal and insisted in the evening on drinking vodka to excess, his English language skills deteriorating rapidly in the process, while my Finnish seemed to improve. We sang the Finnish National anthem together in the yard as the sun came up.

The drinks are politically themed.

Drink #1:  The Schwarzenegger. It's 2 ounces of vodka and 30 milligrams of anabolic steroids.  You get drunk, but when you wake up in the morning you have washboard abs.  Oh, and if your friends fall down in the pub, you'll be strong enough to pick 'em up.

Drink #2:  The Joemomentum (after Senator Joseph Lieberman).  It's carrot juice mixed with prune juice with a garnish of sauerkraut.  It's awful to look at and leaves a bad aftertaste in your mouth--and wildly unpopular.

More drink suggestions, anyone?

Do they have frog's legs?

If so, they can just wear long pants and no one will know it.

Sorry, ancient groaner of a jest, but couldn't resist it.

Honestly, tho', in my carnivore days I did sup upon Frog's Legs à la Parisienne, which most Americans have a bit difficulty managing not because of the taste (which is scrumptious if prepared properly), but rather because of the rather eerie resemblance between a frog's leg and a human limb (once the flipper bit is removed of course).

Now I'm a vegetarian and have a deal with the animals:  don't try to eat me and I won't eat you.  The only way I'd eat a cow is if I had to kill him in self-defence...and the cows in Switzerland are notably placid and don't tend towards the homicidal. Although there was a milk cow in a pasture who was eyeing me with what appeared to be malicious intent not so long ago....

I have just been watching condi on Hardball, and I am in need of some restful place to gather with my friends, game of pool anyone.
I had another idea, (soon all will say oh no she has another idea), but this is it:  The person who has a day of the week assisnment can designate others to take his/her place, whenever she/he chooses.  So that would spread this around and allow others to do the hosting on occasion.  As usual looking for feedback.  In addition Zander, we can use the site I linked you to last night for coordination if necessary...

but... I'm totally impulsive - I could just leave town for weeks without mentioning it to anyone. Or spend days in a book or researching something without checking my mail or popping in here...in fact, I haven't even checked my email today, and with the addition of yahoo last night, I don't know if I know where all my mail is....

shirl? shirl, you understand, right?

Is a place to rest and hear all the frog conversation!

In similarity with Under The Milkwood, a classic by Thomas Dylan. often played in London by actor Richard Burton

We are not wholly bad or good
Who live our lives under Milk Wood,
And Thou, I know, wilt be the first
To see our best side, not our worst.

No really!

Cross my heart ...
or was the expression cross my fingers?
I always get crossed when I'm confused like this.
Makes me think of the Daktari series with Clarence.

Please go to the new diary and decorate it for me, I don't have time to do much this morning as I have to rush and get ready for my daughter to come and take me out of here for a few hours.  Can you believe it, I am really going out into the world, but not for long, I will be back..
