Bennett: Abort Black Babies to Reduce Crime

by susanhu
Wed Sep 28th, 2005 at 09:07:24 PM EST

Bill Bennett -- Reagan's former Secretary of Education -- declared on his satellite radio show today that "you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."

Bennett was discussing the decline in the crime rate -- apparently inspired by "the claim that legalized abortion has reduced crime rates, which was posited in the book Freakonomics (William Morrow, May 2005) by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner." (Media Matters)

Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations."

[Bennett instead declared] that if "you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down."

Listen to the actual audio -- at the risk of your own sanity. MM also has a transcript.

Media Matters reports that "Bill Bennett's Morning in America airs on approximately 115 radio stations with an estimated weekly audience of 1.25 million listeners." (Thanks to Keith Olbermann for first alerting me to this story, and to Media Matters for its usual, impeccable work in fact-checking the news.)

Bennett's show is run through Salem Radio Network (SRN): "SRN is a full-service satellite radio network based in Irving, Texas. We serve Christian-formatted and general market news/talk stations through affiliate partnerships." SRN's phone number is 972-831-1920. Ask for Charles Mefferd, Operations Manager. The new/existing sales numbers are 972-402-8800 and Fax:972-402-8200. And, use the network's online contact form to send them a message.

So this is the programming of Christians? I wonder what Jesus would listen to in today's radio markets.

Update [2005-9-29 11:13:5 by susanhu]:
Civil Rights Lawyer Constance Motley Baker Dies at 84

Reports Amy Goodman on this morning's Democracy Now!:

The first African American woman to serve as a federal judge has passed away. Famed civil rights lawyer Constance Baker Motley died Wednesday in New York. She was 84.

As a young lawyer, Motley represented Martin Luther King Jr. After a brief political career, she began a distinguished four-decade span as a judge in 1966, becoming the first black woman appointed to the federal bench. Motley earned her degree in economics in 1943 from New York University, and three years later, she obtained her law degree from Columbia Law School. In 1945, she became a law clerk to Thurgood Marshall, who was then chief counsel of the NAACP's Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

In the late 1950s, Motley took an interest in politics and by 1964 had left the NAACP and become the first black woman to serve in the New York State Senate. In 1965, she became the first woman to serve as president of the borough of Manhattan, where she worked to promote integration in public schools.

In her career, she worked on some of the nation's most famous civil rights cases, including preparing the draft complaint in 1950 for what would become Brown v. Board of Education. From 1961 to 1964, Motley won nine of 10 civil rights cases she argued before the U.S. Supreme Court.

WTF!!

What is in 1930's Germany?  How does someone let something like that slip out of their mouths?  Out loud?

That is just horrible.  Just a horrible thing to say.

He has 24 hours to apologize in the most groveling matter possible, to explain why he didn't mean what he sounded like he said he meant.

There can be no qualification to that apology.

Other wise, any one who ever asks him to speak publicly again is a co-conspirator to those genocidal comments.

by pontificator on Wed Sep 28th, 2005 at 09:14:57 PM EST
And an apology for this should be believed about as much as Pat Robertson's statement that he wasn't advocating assassination of the head of a foreign state.

If you actually read the transcript, you will find that most of these comments completely miss the point.

  1. Bennett is dismissing a pro-life argument.
  2. Bennett does not want to abort black babies to reduce crime.

So why did he say it? Bennett was using an extreme argument to point out that extreme arguments sometimes make very little sense. Statistically, aborting all black babies, or for that matter, all babies would reduce crime. However, he makes it clear that that is not only "morally reprehensible" but also unfeasible. Similarly, we cannot say that we should outlaw abortion simply because statistically there would be more productive members of society to support Social Security.

Don't take a quote out of context and automatically believe something when there is obvious partisan bias at play. "At the risk of your sanity", please read the original source and make your own informed opinion.

If anyone still believes that when Republicans say "crime" they are using a code word for "Black people", well, Bennett has just revealed the secret.

One could also argue that had Tom DeLay been aborted, the crime rate would not be as high...

For twenty-five years Bill Bennett has been one of America's biggest assholes. I got to say that twice for a touch of emphasis on Asshole Bill. This is merely one of his many hemmorhodial eruptions.

I need to say one other thing. I think your title misses the mark. The vileness of what he said wasn't that he is promoting the abortion of black babies. He said that would be morally reprehensible. The sickness he exhibited was in assuming that aborting BLACK babies would reduce crime. There you have an unadulterated RACIST statement!

Thank you.  I did.  Good idea.

It figures, doesn't it, that it's a "Christian" network.  Christ must be sick at heart about these imposters.

Thanks Susan. I think this is so very important and the actual racism is there for all the world to see. We don't need to confuse the message. And thanks for the link to the network. I sent them a blistering message. I hope everyone does.

One of the reasons this is so painful to me is that my job is all about working with a lot of African American professionals who are the salt of the earth and spend their days trying to help African American kids who are getting into trouble turn their lives around. I could fill this blog with powerful stories of the desperate situation many of these kids and families live with, and yet manage to overcome. So I take Mr. Bennett's words very personally and it hurts!!

Something that I think a number of people overlook is how to apply REAL pressure to media corporations. The key is to target media entity ___ in conjunction with informing their sponsors or advertisers.

Basically, you inform the specific organization of your complaint, inform them of your desired action, and then inform them that you will be contacting their sponsors as well.

After that, you follow up by actually contacting their sponsors with a similar letter/email that details the issue, and that you will no longer buy their product since they obviously support the media outlet and their disgusting actions.

It's worked in a number of areas and I think that it should be done more.

If you look at reality and thus the segment of our population that is causing the greatest suffering through criminal activity, I'd say, by using Bennett's logic, we should abort all white male Republican babies.  That should reduce the crime rate, don't ya think?

I think it's going to be a whole lot more crowded in that Hell when the evangelical fascists and the principle players of the Bush regime finally spin off this mortal coil. And this odious, repulsive creature Bennett will have a prominent place there.

One of the more militant (and one of my favorite) rap groups, The Last Poets, came down so hard against things like birth control when they were laying down their classic tracks during the 1970s. When you've got a bunch of genocidal freaks running things in this country - it wasn't THAT long ago that eugenics was considered a legitimate perspective in polite society - there's good reason to wonder just how far these assholes would go to keep the next generation of ethnic minority children from being born.

A Poverty of Thought

Liberalism's post-Katrina fearlessness in discovering the obvious -- if an inner city is inundated, the victims will be disproportionately minorities -- stopped short of indelicately noting how many of the victims were women with children but not husbands. Because it was released during the post-Katrina debacle, scant attention was paid to the National Center for Health Statistics' report that in 2003, 34.6 percent of all American births were to unmarried women. The percentage among African American women was 68.2.

Given that most African Americans are middle class and almost half live outside central cities, and that 76 percent of all births to Louisiana African Americans were to unmarried women, it is a safe surmise that more than 80 percent of African American births in inner-city New Orleans -- as in some other inner cities -- were to women without husbands. That translates into a large and constantly renewed cohort of lightly parented adolescent males, and that translates into chaos in neighborhoods and schools, come rain or come shine.

Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater (pardon the pun).  Mr. Bennett obviously overstepped the bounds of acceptable behavior, but the facts presented in the book 'Freakonomics' are hard to argue with.  And not just the facts, but why all other explanations for the unexpected and significant drop in crime, starting in the early 90's, were simply not true.

Those who tended to be criminals were simply never born.

Before reacting, I suggest you read the book.
