FILIBUSTER - Swing votes

by Janet Strange
Sun Jan 29th, 2006 at 09:01:11 AM EST

Democrats.com links to a list of all Senators, some identified as "Democratic swing vote" and others as "Democrat not supporting filibuster."

I cut out all of those and pasted them below. Note that the list includes local office fax and phone numbers, which may be useful since reports are that many the DC voicemail boxes and fax machines are now full or turned off. (WOO-HOO! We're getting through!)

If you fax - it has been suggested that hand-written faxes have more of an impact.

I've also included the pro-choice Republicans. This may give you some ammunition for them:

RMC Opposes Judge Alito for Supreme Court

The Republican Majority for Choice (RMC) regrettably announces its opposition to the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

Suggested message - for swing voters, ask them to support the filibuster. For those who have declared that they are opposed to a filibuster, ask them to vote "present" on the cloture vote. Remind them that a no vote is meaningless if they vote yes on cloture.

To my friend Jan (BooTrib member songmaker) who called EVERY single Dem senator yesterday!

And to all BooTribbles who have been calling, faxing, emailing.

Ready for Round 2? Go after the ones on this list - the tide is turning. Some senators, like DiFi, have reversed their earlier positions. Others haven't yet stated what they will do. We can make a difference.

We may not win - but we can go down fighting if we lose. And it has been known to happen that fighters of "lost causes" sometimes surprise everyone, including themselves, by winning after all.

Thanks JS - I just logged in and was scrolling down to see where we might be with the Alito action - and here you are. :)

Fax the word to FILIBUSTER instantly to twelve wavering Senators

Let's not forget to hit the Senators where we might cynically think they really care - their campaign offices.  Additionally, when we call the PACs it doesn't matter if we're non-residents!

Joseph I. Lieberman (D- CT), (860) 244-2006
Thomas R. Carper (D- DE), (302) 328-5774
Evan Bayh (D- IN), 202-326-0450
Robert Menendez (D-NJ), 201-271-1161
Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D- DE) , 202-547-2221

Call the Democrats (Mary Landrieu, Ken Salazar, Barack Obama, Tom Harkin) who oppose Alito but also said they oppose a filibuster. We must persuade them that a vote against Alito is meaningless if they don't support a filibuster.

Senator Salazar (D-CO) 202-224-5852

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) 202-224-5824 (If you're having trouble getting through a Washington number, you can look up a Senator's local number in your and fax here: http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/dbq/officials/?lvl=C)

Senator Barack Obama Phone: 202-224-2854 District Offices: Chicago: 312-886-3506 Marion: 618-997-2402 Springfield: 217-492-5089

Senator Tom Harkin Phone: 202-224-3254 District Offices: Des Moines: 515-284-4574 Cedar Rapids: 319-365-4504 Davenport: 563-322-1338 Dubuque: 563-582-2130  Sioux City: 712-252-1550

Call your own Democratic Senator: 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up your senator's local office numbers and fax here: http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/dbq/officials/?lvl=C

Unbelievably, three Democrats (Ben Nelson, Tim Johnson and Robert Byrd) support Alito! Tell them to either support filibuster or at least "don't get in the way." Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) 202-224-6551 Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) 202-224-3954 Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) 202-224-5842

888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number in your phone book or here: http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/dbq/officials/?lvl=C

Fourth: Call the "Red State" Democrats: (Message same as above -- "No" is meaningless) Tom Carper (DE)

Kent Conrad (ND)

Byron Dorgan (ND)

Mark Pryor (AR)

Call these "Blue State" and pro-choice Republicans: (Message: A "Unitary Executive" is dangerous to balance of powers--please do not get in the way of a filibuster.) Lincoln Chafee (RI)

Susan Collins (ME)

Lisa Murkowski (AK)

Gordon Smith (OR)

Olympia Snowe (ME)

Ted Stevens (AK)

Blanche Lincoln (AR)

CALL: 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641.

If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number and fax here: http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/dbq/officials/?lvl=C

For extra credit, call all of the 2008 Presidential candidates who are sitting Senators--Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Russ Feingold, and John Kerry--and tell them to either LEAD THE FILIBUSTER or KISS YOUR SUPPORT GOODBYE. 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number in your phone book or here: http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/dbq/officials/?lvl=C

You can also send that message to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (202-224-2447) and the Democratic National Committee (202-863-8000).

Polls and public opinion are another way to apply pressure -- get word out about why Alito needs to be filibustered:

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. (Click here)

People for the American Way has collected nearly 65,000 signatures to send to the Senate, please add yours: Save the Court Petition

John Kerry has endorsed this anti-Alito petition, signers' names will be read into the Congressional Record:http://www.johnkerry.com/...

This list from Democrats.com is awesome. I'm almost at the bottom of my pile of faxes and have gotten EVERY ONE through so far - if the D.C. number was busy or didn't answer, one of the local office ones worked.

Thanks JAnet for keeping this in the forefront. I have faxed, called and emailed. Now I guess I had better make a few more calls and faxes today. We can do this. If we can turn DiFi we just maybe able to get a couple more to at least not even vote.

(No, not a tip jar, a suggestion.)

For those handwritten faxes, if you have the ability both to fax and to copy - like you have one of those "all-in-one" machines, or your fax machine doubles as a copier - handwrite a letter that can go to all of the "swing vote" senators with everything except the "Dear Senator" line. Make 17 copies (I counted). Then write in "Dear Senator Lincoln," "Dear Senator Lieberman," etc on each.

You'll need 8 for the "opposed to filibuster" (please vote "present on cloture") ones, and 3 for the Repub's.

Then fax away!

I got all of mine done - except for the egregious Nelson of NE and Johnson of SD. I had to take a breath and decide what to say to those spineless wimps, er, honored Senators. Here's what I came up with:

Dear Senator,

I am greatly disappointed that you have stated that you will vote to confirm Judge Alito to the Supreme Court.

In 1787, our founding fathers wrote a Constitution that contained a brilliant idea - separate the powers of three co-equal branches of government to provide a system of checks and balances. They were determined that no executive officer of this new country should ever be able to act as a king or dictator. This form of government has served us well for 219 years.

Judge Alito's "unitary executive" theory of the over-arching power of the presidency destroys that balance. In his view, Congress is not equal to the executive branch. Its powers are limited to those that the executive chooses to grant it.

I fail to see how any member of Congress could confirm to the Supreme Court any jurist whose goal is to destroy the autonomy of Congress and thus, our Constitutional system of government.

When you took your oath of office, you swore to uphold our Constitution. Please reconsider your vote - protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Now I'm going to copy that out by hand and fax them too.

I believe it is important to contact the groups that advise and financially support senate Dems.

Send a message to
the DNC
the DSCC
the DLC

Mine was: Senate Democrats MUST FILIBUSTER the Alito vote - it is time to TAKE A STAND - I will NOT GIVE my money, time, or energy to any senate Democrat who does not FILIBUSTER!

(My state's senators are Republicans so I could not mention my vote.)

"I don't want Alito on MY Supreme Court!"

filibuster round-up:

http://actionalert.blogspot.com/2006/01/filibustering-alito.html

and be sure to contact (R) senators, too.  near as i can tell, they'd almost have to extend debate, just because they'd need more time just to process and tally all the voices of objection to Alito!

LTE resources, etc.:

if senators from out of state don't appreciate your call, just remind them that SCOTUS' rulings don't affect only the members of that state - this is a national question of the utmost importance.

oh, and please don't use the word "democrat."  i know it's the grammatically correct form, but if we can't find a way to use "Democratic Senator swing vote" or some such, we should just go with (D) or something.  no need to reinforce the right wing memes, even if they are the right inflection in this case.

if:

Elections have consequences. Alito is the consequence.

then:

judicial appointees are to some degree a reflection of the electorate's will

therefore:  the court should have a balanced ideological makeup
