Jack Cafferty Nails It

by susanhu
Mon Jan 9th, 2006 at 04:24:23 PM EST

E-mail caffertyfile@cnn.com

Crab Apple Jack Cafferty (the incarnation of Dennis the Menace's "Mr. Wilson") says the one question he wants the senators to ask Judge Alito is this:

(Paraphrased) Is it against the law for President Bush to authorize NSA eavesdropping against Americans without a court order?

Yes or no, Judge Alito?

Jack is betting that not a single senator will ask the question. In the next hour, though, he wants you to e-mail him, and let him know what you think. E-mail: caffertyfile@cnn.com

For talking points, as if you'd need them, see "One-Man Rule."

(Oh wait. There's a press conference on the spina bifida baby from Iraq. Thanks to the U.S. in Iraq, who brought her here for successful surgery. It's in 10 minutes. Stay tuned. ... Please, cynics. Hold your tongues. Do not mention the close to 100,000 Iraqis, many of them children, that we've killed since 2003. Okay, Ducky ... I'll give you two minutes...)

P.S. Jeff Toobin, the CNN legal analyst (and New Yorker writer), just called the Democrats "spunky." Cute.

My poor senators.  Today alone, I've sent e-mail to them through NARAL, True Majority, and UCC (Pastor Dan's group).

If I am not mistaken, Mr. Danger has decreed that it is a crime to suggest he has committed a crime.

Now on to Baby Noor. Sorry if I made you wait longer than two minutes, Zarq was working on the Al Qaeda anti-Alito petition and needed help with some spellling.

I think it is wonderful that Baby Noor is getting her surgery. There was a piece on CNN just the other day about all the Baby Noors in the hospitals there who chase around CNN personnel begging for their children to be helped.

Before the US destroyed Iraq, of course, Baby Noor, like other children born with spina bifida, could have been operated on right there in Baghdad.

Thank you.  I find the gooshy-goo coverage appalling, even though the video of that baby make me love her instantly ... she is a bright spirit!

Yes, those babies could have been cared for in Baghdad.  And the Cubans could have sent their fabulous doctors and nurses over there, if it weren't so dangerous or Cuban help unwelcome.  Just an example ... there were so many possibilities.

Why couldn't that mother get to a normal hospital?

I saw that story as well and it made me incredibly mad.  There are hundreds of Iraqi kids with cancer, birth defects, etc., who have no hope of receiving treatment, let alone the VIP treatment that baby Noor is receiving.  God help them.  And shame on the media and the administration for turning this tragedy into a PR stunt.

Yes, you can never have enough spunk.  Nice way to make Dems appear childish by using language to marginalize both them and their concerns about Alito.  But then, I forget: to the media it's all one big game anyway.

That refers to Toobin's framing of Democrats.

Here's my email to Jack:

I'd go beyond the NSA question specifically and ask Judge Alito if he sees any limits to Bush's claims to be able to disregard the law whenever he deems it conflicts with his authority as Commander in Chief.  After all, in a recent signing statement Bush executed contemporaneously with signing the McCain Anti-torture bill, he effectively indicated his intent to disregard the prohibition against torture whenever he felt like it.

why is Abrams talking about the cruise ship?  Shouldn't he have guests for the hour to talk about the SCOTUS?

NEW YORK While doubtful at first, the sale of Knight Ridder seems to be very real. The San Jose Mercury News reports that this week, Knight Ridder executives begin meeting with potential buyers, a process that will take about three weeks. A final decision by the board is at least two months away.
