Curt Weldon's History as a Head-Case

With news that the Feds have "conducted six raids this morning - including at the homes of [Curt Weldon's (PA-07)] daughter and a longtime friend", I thought I might remind people just how crazy Weldon is.

Here's a picture of Rep. Curt Weldon (R, PA-07) giving a plaque to Moammar Qaddafi.

Here's a picture of Rep. Curt Weldon speaking at faux coronation of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Note the picture of Weldon pinning a medal on Moammar Qaddafi.

Weldon allegedly introduced Sun Myung Moon at his coronation, calling him, "humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent." Whether that was a joke or not, Moon and Qaddafi are not the only lunatics that Weldon has associated himself with. And this gets to the heart of today's raids:

Karen Weldon, an inexperienced 29-year-old lobbyist from suburban Philadelphia, seemed an unlikely choice for clients seeking global public relations services. Yet her tiny firm was selected last year for a plum $240,000 contract to promote the good works of a wealthy Serbian family that had been linked to accused war criminal Slobodan Milosevic.

Despite a lack of professional credentials, she had one notable asset — her father, U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), who is a leading voice in Washington on former Eastern Bloc affairs. She got the contract after he championed the efforts of two family members, Dragomir and Bogoljub Karic, to win U.S. visas from the State Department, which so far has refused them entry.

Intelligence officials warned Weldon that the brothers were too close to Milosevic, who is accused of leading the "ethnic cleansing" in the former Yugoslav federation.

And that's not all. Weldon wrote a book last year called Countdown to Terror. Here's what the American Prospect had to say about it.

Manucher Ghorbanifar

...in an exclusive interview with The American Prospect, Weldon's "Ali" -- who was identified in an April article by me and Jeet Heer as Fereidoun Mahdavi, a frail, elderly former minister of commerce in the shah’s government and a longtime business associate of Iran-Contra arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar -- said he was stunned and perplexed to learn that Weldon had used his information to write a book, emphasizing that Weldon never even told him about the book.

Mahdavi also said that the bulk of the information that he had provided to Weldon was originally sourced from none other than Ghorbanifar, the subject of a rare CIA “burn notice” after the agency found him to be a "fabricator" more than two decades ago during the Iran-Contra affair.

“Many information that I have given to Weldon is coming from Ghorbanifar,” said Mahdavi, who was reached in Paris by telephone on June 6. “Because Ghorbanifar used me, in fact, to pass that stuff because I know he has problems in Washington.”

I have written about Weldon before:

Curt Weldon PA-07 is Nuts

Curt Weldon's Deep Throat and Wild Fantasies

His opponent is Admiral Joe Sestak. Hopefully, Sestak will be propelled to victory now that Weldon is obviously under investigation. But, we can take nothing for granted.

in the Republican party that isn't either under indictment or investigation other than Bushco at the moment? Wake up Republicans. The Titanic is sinking and you are still on it. Grab a lifeboat, vote Democrat!

Bizarre...

I have NEVER understood how this man won elections. That bizarro-world coronation thing should have been enough. I mean, even if staff dropped the ball in a big way and didn't do thorough research, when he got there, he should have smelled a rat and bounced.

And this was bi-partisan stupidity at its finest: I believe Mark Dayton was there along w/ Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL). I do not excuse cozying up to the head Moonie, I don't care who it is.

But yeah...Weldon is a weird one. Not too weird to set up his kid to cash in, but weird enough to finally be retired.

Can't hear ya, Peach!
