Bolton to Resign

by BooMan
Mon Dec 4th, 2006 at 11:57:11 AM EST

He wasn't frog-marched out of U.N. Headquarters in shackles, but I'll take it. John Bolton has told the President that he will resign as ambassador as soon as Congress formally adjourns. No more Mr. Mustache as our chief diplomat.

I'm very pleased that the Senate held firm and refused to accept Bolton, especially after he was recess appointed by Bush in act of sheer contempt for the Senate's role in advising and consenting.

However, the fact that the administration fought so long and hard for John Bolton means that any likely replacement will probably be equally popular with the neo-conservative and hard-line Likudist crowd that so loves Joe Lieberman, Jane Harman, James Woolsey, etc. The Democrats beat back Bolton by criticizing his demeanor, his temper, and his documented contempt for the U.N. But he was worse than that. He was one of the true believers. We can't afford another one. Joe Biden should make sure Bolton's replacement comes from (at least) the realist school of foreign policy. Neo-conservatism is dead, and we should keep it dead.

Display:
if bush does nominate another bolton clone to the post, what biden and the dem leadership in the senate should do is to bring the nomination to a vote and to vote it down.

if they do that, there can't be any recess appointment.  now that dems have a majority, they might as well use it

this is the  letter from bolton to bush  Sad, isn't it that he can not find a way of making a statement longer.....NOT!!!!!!  I am so very happy about this.  NOw he will be free to prosecute for all the wrong things he has done...right?

the letter makes me think he was fired or asked to resign, otherwise he would have written the 'I must move on because of my family, etc."letter.

What's Bolton's next gig you ask?

Thinkprogress has it: The moustache has future plans; 'write a book and do the speaking tours to blast Bush for abandoning ultra-conservative foreign policy principles.

who woulda thought? wahaaaaaaa.

Well, "You can't vote for war and disown the results"

Jr's protestations aside; it appears the Carlyle Purge is proceeding unabated.

Full on damage control in service of preserving  what little chances remain for the rapidly declining Bush dynasty...who's next?...Abu?

A bit OT, but speaking of the Bush legacy, I saw Doro Bush Koch talking about her "Daddy" book on cspan last week. I think it was a slip, but in talking about the book she mentioned that her father approached her about writing it. Sounds like a little "message control" or "legacy building" to me. How completely lame and transparent.

pretty well sums up the entire legacy.

Another observation: isn't it interesting that the recent resignations/firings have been people most closely associated w/ Cheney, and by persuasion, hard line neo-cons...

Yep, its interesting. And I would NOT want to be anywhere near Cheney these days. As we know, the man has a mouth and a temper - and his aim isn't all that good.
