Bush Continues to Drown

by BooMan
Wed Mar 15th, 2006 at 04:28:48 PM EST

President Bush's poll numbers continue to drop. Pew Research now puts him at 33%.

Bush's overall approval measure stands at 33%, the lowest rating of his presidency. Bush's job performance mark is now about the same as the ratings for Democratic and Republican congressional leaders (34% and 32%, respectively), which showed no improvement in spite of public approval of the congressional response to the ports deal.

The president's ratings for handling of several specific issues, particularly terrorism, have also declined sharply. Just 42% now approve of Bush's job in handling terrorist threats, an 11-point drop since February. In January 2005, as Bush was starting his second term, 62% approved of his handling of terrorist threats.

Bush's personal image also has weakened noticeably, which is reflected in people's one-word descriptions of the president. Honesty had been the single trait most closely associated with Bush, but in the current survey "incompetent" is the descriptor used most frequently (See pp. 7-8).

So, who are the people that still support the incompetent President?

A more detailed portrait of the falloff in Bush approval shows significant declines among groups who had been the president's strongest supporters. In January 2005, conservative Republicans approved of the president by a margin of 94% to 3%. While still overwhelmingly supportive, today just 78% of conservative Republicans approve while 16% disapprove. Support from moderate and liberal Republicans has dropped by about the same amount, from 82% to 65% today.

It looks like his only supporters at this point are people that like Bush for his position on certain social issues. Maybe some are still unwilling to abandon a President in wartime. But that's it.

It's no wonder the media is bullying Bush to fire some people.

I'll let you know if my wingnut relations still support him after I get back from my trip this weekend. I'm thinking some still will unfortunately.

You're making me want to email my dad's side of the family to find out the same thing...maybe we should all do it and compile the results into our own unscientific poll?

Then again, I'm just relieved they've stopped trying to bring me into the GOP fold...

the folks that still like him are the rich folks that just did their taxes, and the corporate folks that are looking for some cushy contracts.

But Mr. & Mrs. Middle America are wavering, at least till the next terror attack...

Between the absolutely convinced wingnuts and the dimly pseudo-patriotic who feel it is always wrong to criticize the Commander in Chief (especially when we're at wah), the floor of Bush support is probably no lower than 20%.  But who knows? It's already lower than I thought it would go.  This is like watching a game of presidential limbo!

Oh mlk, you type too fast.

I read this analysis by Jim Lobe over lunch and had indigestion.
Imho,Joe Lieberman keeps some interesting company. What's that saying, you sleep with dogs wake-up with fleas?

[B]ush's speech,[before the neo conservative FDD] which broke little new ground, is the first of a series scheduled this week aimed at bolstering badly sagging public support for the U.S. occupation and reassuring voters that Iraq is not descending into civil war despite the widespread sectarian violence that followed the bombing of Samarra's Golden Mosque late last month.[..]

In that sense, the White House's choice of the FDD as an appropriate forum would appear somewhat anomalous, given the prominence of neo-conservatives in their leadership and the stridency of its views.

Among its board of advisers are Centre for Security Policy president Frank Gaffney, who has attacked Bush for supporting Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza disengagement plan; Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol; former CIA director James Woolsey, one of the most ubiquitous advocates of the notion that Saddam Hussein played a role in the 9/11 attacks in the run-up to the Iraq war; and American Enterprise Institute's Richard Perle, the former ultra-hawkish chairman of the Defence Policy Board who reportedly suggested in a debate at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (that was also addressed by Cheney) that 12 B-2 bombers could solve the ongoing crisis with Iran over its nuclear programme.[..]

In 2004, FDD, which had by then begun receiving government funds for training students and activists in the Middle East in addition to private contributions, submitted a brief to the International Court of Justice in support of Israel's construction on Palestinian land of the wall sealing off Israel and major Israeli settlement from the rest of the West Bank on the grounds that "it can benefit the Palestiniansà"

In the same year, it also helped found Committee on the Present Danger (CPD) and recruited former Secretary of State George Shultz and Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman, and former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar to its board. FDD and CPD have run a number of joint conferences "targeted at the Washington policy community", particularly regarding Syria and Iran, and espousing the view that Washington faces "World War IV" in its battle with "Islamofascism".

Who wouldda thought that on top of throwing kisses, Joe keeps company with the neo-cons. If Joe is a Democratic Senator, I'm a monkey's aunt.

Bush is not making this mess all alone.  If we had a FUNCTIONAL CONGRESS much of this mess could have been avoided, BUT we do not.  The 2006 midterms are our best chance to START to return to a rational, functioning government.

Explain to those Reps you know that are disgusted with the governemt that the Repub party will not change till they get the message - vote them out!

Pew is respected among the best and is considered balanced.

Independents at 26%.

Now, the next stop down the ladder is 30%, Can't get too low for me.

Those must still be Reagan Democrats at 9%?

And if he started out with a high 2% approval among African- Americans -(Condi, Armstrong, Allen and Colin)- waaaaaaay back when, I'd guess he's at minus 210%. Only Condi is still standing by her man.

This graph of approval poll bias shows Pew to be closest to the average of all polls:

interview with the person who explains that Bush prays every day and is a good Christian, and thus is a great president. Seems like it's always the same person.

There are some interesting details. 57% now disapprove, up from 52 just a month previous. I think this is more significant than the Approve number because it's harder to back away from.

"Don't knows" are at their highest level, 10%. I think this means there are people who can't quite say out loud that they disapprove of The President. So my guess is that in the privacy of the voting booth, real disapproval would be over 60%. NOW are the Dem congressional campaigns ready to run against Bush???
