Mel Gibson linked to Aussie anti-Semitic group

Via RAW STORY from the Sunday Herald Sun:

Mel Gibson once had close links to the Australian League of Rights, a Far Right group notorious for its anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial.

The league claims the world is run by a secret society of Jews.

The Hollywood star's foray into Far Right activist politics in Australia occurred in 1987 when he campaigned for a friend, Rob Taylor, who stood unsuccessfully for the northern Victorian federal seat of Indi.

I wonder what Jodie Foster is going to think of him now.

Information about the Australian League of Rights from Wiki world, although Wiki claims the article doesn't cite its sources:

The League strongly denies that a Holocaust occurred during World War II in which millions of people, particularly European Jews were killed, and is strongly supportive of the polemicist David Irving... They believe that the world is run by a secret society of Jews... The League is distinctive for asserting that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a genuine Jewish document (the Encyclopædia Britannica for example describes the Protocols as a "fraudulent document that served as a pretext and rationale for anti-Semitism in the early 20th century").

I'm with Rob Schneider on this one, although I hate Schneider's comedies.

If this is true, Gibson is not going to live this one down.  Not ever.  Did he think that 'healing' is going to make it blow over? Or having friends stand up for him? Or have fans make excuses for him? I haven't heard about him accepting invitations from synagogues for Yom Kippur, though. Once the proverbial genie is out of the lamp, it's hard to push the sucker back in.

This episode is also not something out of the mouths of babes.  He's been shacking up with the jackboot types for beaucoup years.  The group even supported Pinochet.

HuffPo's got it now.

Mel Gibson is done.

An untypical Negro

I think he's done too.  I've heard even right-wingers say that the truth comes out with alcohol.  It'll be interesting to see if it will revive the controversy over the anti-Semitism in The Passion movie - which Gibson denied.

A friend of a friend who knew ... bs

"Mel and Hutton were interested in some of our ideas."

Charles Pinwill, a former Queensland state director of the League of Rights, said he knew Gibson's father, Hutton, and said Gibson was interested in the league's ideas.

"They were never members of the league, no. But we never really recruited members, just support. (Mel and Hutton) were interested in some of our ideas," Mr Pinwill said.

"His dad had politically similar ideas to me. His dad had a well-considered philosophy, he thought things through.

"I knew (Mr Taylor) was a friend of Mel's. Mel's not really a political animal, he's interested in spiritual things."

Mel Gibson is a crazy and a bigot, but to libel him as an anti-semite as ADL has been trying for years, one needs to provide a case. This doesn't look solid and is probably disinformation to build on quotes and hearsay, making use of bloggers on the Internet.
