The Real Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee seems like a nice guy. Maybe he is. But he's also a real jerk.

One of [Huckabee's] first acts as governor was to block Medicaid from funding an abortion for a mentally retarded teenager who had been raped by her stepfather -- an act in direct violation of federal law, which requires states to pay for abortions in cases of rape. "The state didn't fund a single such abortion while Huckabee was governor," says Dr. William Harrison of the Fayetteville Women's Clinic. "Zero."

I don't think I need to editorialize on this one. But, I'd like to know what percentage of the electorate would think the Huckster did the right thing. What do you think?

But what must be understood is that as despicable as this act was it will only matter to those who would never vote for him in a million years anyway. But it is exactly what is going to aid him greatly in rallying the fundies, evangelicals and "values" voters to his side. And with them will come all the associated cash of the faith based flock.

I know that to Progressives everything that Taibbi lays out seems as logical, reasonable and obvious as the sun rising in the east each morning. But none of these things matter to block of voters he is wooing. And while his history might be initially alarming to the Club For Growth crowd, I think they might find him very amenable to burnishing the rough edges of some of his anti-corporate rhetoric. And who would be surprised to see a little appeasement of the corporate crowd with the old wink and a nod when it comes to railing about accountability. Hey, we've lived for seven years with a guy whose actions have very often been in total opposition to his candidate rhetoric. And that hasn't seemed to cause the corporate profit train to run off the tracks, now has it?

And we musn't ever forget the role the Fourth Estate, our illustrious and compliant media will play in Huckabee's ascendancy. Our mainstream press have proven quite willing to be duped by the political smoke and mirrors of Republicans for most of our recent memory. Does anyone really believe that Huckabee will be treated any differently? They are salivating for a candidate who can be framed as the antithesis of the cold, calculating, triangulating and fake Dems. Rudy is imploding in scandals, Romney has the Mormon horse collar around his neck and McCain is on life support. Huck is the man and do not be surprised to see the media willingly picking up his banner.

I mostly agree, but not with this:

The Club for Growth will do everything in their power to bury Huckabee. And if it ends up being him versus Clinton the final election, they'll continue to do everything they can to bury Huckabee short of outright giving support to Clinton.

They, unlike some of the evangelical crowd, know how the game is played. If a candidate that they have announced is unacceptable gets the nomination and goes on to win, their control over the GOP is over and the GOP moves towards the center on tax issues - diminishing their control over the party.

I'm not saying Huckabee can't win - far from it, at this point I actually think he's the most likely candidate the GOP has right now if he doesn't implode in Iowa - but the Club for Growth won't be doing a 180. They'd rather maintain orthodoxy, lose in '08, and make the Dem move to the center on tax issues - then run hard right in the next election decrying the "liberal tax increases" of the current Dem president.
