Visit from Senator Dodd

by BooMan
Wed Feb 14th, 2007 at 02:25:15 AM EST

Senator Christopher Dodd is going to stop by the Frog Pond tomorrow between 3:30PM (eastern time) and 4:00PM. He will be here to talk about the Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007. This act (.pdf) would help repair the damage down by the Military Commissions Act of 2006.

Here are some of the provisions of Dodd's bill.

Restores Habeas Corpus protections to detainees
Narrows the definition of unlawful enemy combatant to individuals who directly participate in hostilities against the United States who are not lawful combatants
Bars information gained through coercion from being introduced as evidence in trials
Empowers military judges to exclude hearsay evidence they deem to be unreliable
Authorizes the US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces to review decisions by the Military commissions
Limits the authority of the President to interpret the meaning and application of the Geneva Conventions and makes that authority subject to congressional and judicial oversight
Provides for expedited judicial review of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 to determine the constitutionally of its provisions

If this sounds good to you, you can become a co-sponsor of the bill (again, see ad at left). Dodd makes his pitch here.

Did you know that last year President Bush signed a law that dishonors our obligations under the Geneva Conventions and allows unreliable statements gained by torture or coercion to be used as evidence against defendants. This is just one more nail in America's international reputation, that has already suffered terribly because of the Bush war of choice against Iraq. The international good will toward America that existed after the al Qaeda attacks of September 11, 2001 has been squandered by the Bush Administration.

Chris Dodd is seeking to restore America's moral authority and rebuild international respect for our country. Earlier this month Chris Dodd introduced a bill that would stop President Bush's troop escalation in Iraq, and now he has introduced legislation that overturns the sham trials and admissibility of tainted evidence made possible by the Military Commissions Act. Read the legislation:

Sen. Dodd is asking for citizen co-sponsors of the bill, so please visit the link below and sign on!

http://www.restore-habeas.org

Thanks!

I encourage everyone to become a co-sponsor, either by using the funky new ad (at left) or by following the links above.

Senator Dodd is an announced candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Senator Dodd is a veteran of the Army Reserves, and he is fluent in Spanish from his time with the Peace Corp in the Dominican Republic. He was elected to Congress as a Watergate baby in 1974. He is probably best known for his work with early education, health care reform, and his tireless work enacting the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, probably Clinton's single greatest piece of domestic legislation.

In introducing The Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 (.pdf) he is trying to do exactly what the bill purports to do. This is not some kind of Orwellian doublespeak like Healthy Forests or Clean Skies. This is the real deal. This bill looks to restore the human rights of people in U.S. custody and restore a proper balance between the three branches of government.

Sen. Dodd is obviously a very busy man. And he is doing us a great honor by setting aside an half-hour of his valuable time to discuss The Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 with us. So, here is what I would like the Booman Tribune community to do. Take a look at the bill (.pdf). And please pre-prepare a question for Senator Dodd. When he arrives at 3:30PM eastern time tomorrow, you will be prepared to cut and paste your question into the thread where he will have time to read and respond. Please only ask one question and do not hog the thread. Some of his aides will be around to answer further questions or clarify any follow-up questions.

We've done Q & A's with candidates before and it didn't work very well because users would pepper them with questions. Try to come up with one question that you will be happy with. If you are a lawyer it might be a legal question (Dodd received his legal degree from the University of Louisville School of Law). If you are an activist it might be another question. If you are Jose Padilla, 'hey, how'd you get internet access?'

This is a pretty big deal for me. When I started this blog I never thought that two years later I'd have a Presidential contender showing up to answer questions. And he is only doing it here. Not in orange, not in blue. So, please be respectful and polite. And let's make sure he has some good questions!!

I'd vote for him! I sure favor him over Biden, Obama, and Clinton!

He's a mensch. I've heard of him getting famously drunk with Senator Kennedy (at the Monocle on Capitol Hill, discussing policy. I always wished I could have been at the table.

How can you, after all Dobbs must be one of those incompetent, intellectually impaired racists according to you,  since he co-sponsored a bill in 2003 protecting American workers against labor arbitrage via the H-1B and L-1.

You are not going to call him a racist or imply he has limited intellectual capability?  How inconsistent.

Congrats Booman, Dobbs is one of the better candidates and this particular bill deserves as much support as we can muster.

Dodd also tried to get an amendment to remove tax incentives to offshore outsource during that same period and was defeated by the Republicans.
They turned the the The American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 into a complete corporate pork fest and added even more tax incentives and loopholes to give further incentives to offshore outsource US jobs.

Dobbs did try to stop it and was defeated.  These actions are all why he's a better candidate in my view.

Why not get the questions lined up through you before that time and even get them to him so he can prepare.  Then let him post the questions and his answers with follow-up live discussions if time.  Just a suggestion.

The candidates are venturing far deeper into the smaller blogosphere than ever before.  I was contacted by a Richardson staffer wanting to schedule an interview, and had Elizabeth Edwards comment on one of my diaries at MyDD.  Remember how shocking it was in 2003 when Ezra Klein was feted by Trippi?  Times have changed.

BTW, I've already signed on to Dodd's bill.

I've been anxiously waiting for the restoration of our human rights and our country's reputation ever since the Nov. elections. Its great that Senator Dodd is visiting here! Sadly, I'll be away from the computer during that period tomorrow:(

I'm honored to be given the chance to be a citizen co-sponsor of this bill.

Congrats!!!! I hate that I will have to miss it as I have a doctor's appointment.  Can someone ask if he would support the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and let Gays and Lesbians serve openly in the military.  Thanks!!!!

I'm sure someone will be willing to use their question for you.  Maybe you can find someone in the cafe tomorrow that will volunteer.  If not, I will throw it out there for you.

Me either but I understand why they did.  The campaign did not ask them to but the blog has been taken over by nut cases and I heard they also received threats.  I didn't have them in my blog roll before but you can bet I do now.

Congratulations, Booman.  Having Dodd on your blog is a feather in your cap.  But still, it is not an excuse for missing DL, or quizzo!

I'm thrilled that Dodd is taking on this issue and I'm thrilled he is coming for a visit to the pond.

Great work, Booman.

If you want things to get better, be prepared to deal with change.

I'm very interesting in this other bill of Dodd's:

S.308
"A bill to prohibit an escalation in United States military forces in Iraq without prior authorization by Congress."

Cosponsors are Boxer and Kennedy. Sounds fantastic!

I'm looking forward to this.  I haven't paid much attention to Dodd - he was my Senator for a long time when I lived in CT and you know what they say about familiarity.  I'm off Edwards and don't like Obama.  Clark hasn't announced.  Maybe Dodd is my guy.

Thanks for setting this up.

There's no reason to base our decision on who we think is electable right now.  We can, hopefully, have some say in who is electable.

Wow this is super cool.  I was mortified to see my diary with the word "conspiracies" was in the reco list though.  Good gracious, he's going to think we're all a bunch of nuts and like the shake and bake kid, I helped!

I hope this session goes supremely well and congratulations of the highest order, Boo!

When politicians show up at the OP (orange place), they immediately get bombarded with 60 million questions, most of which are silly or irrelevant.

Can we have a somewhat moderated visit, so that he could answer 10 sensible questions instead of 9 million silly ones?
