HotAir and Murtha's Plan to End the War

by BooMan

It's kind of amusing to read Hot Air's response to Jack Murtha's slow bleed plan for ending the war. It boils down to this:

Murtha is going to try to make it impossible for the President to find the troops he would need to maintain the war in Iraq. He will try to do this by attaching amendments to the 'upcoming $93 billion supplemental spending bill for Iraq and Afghanistan.' Multiple deployments will be capped, units will have to meet equipment and manpower requirements to deploy, etc.

Now, the right-wing is seeing this as some kind of treason. And they want Democrats to simply cut off funding if they oppose the war, not strangle the deployment process. I would actually sympathize with their argument if we could actually overcome a Republican filibuster and cut off funding. But we can't, so this is the only option for ending the war. And that is just the way it is.

Hi Boo,

I totally agree with you about Murtha's plan. He is a wiley old fox and I am glad he is on "our" side.

Republicans voting against properly training our troops.
Republicans voting against properly equipping our troops.
Republicans voting to break up military families.

Murtha's a genius and this is political gold. It may not end the war, but at least it will tone it down a bit, and everything is good for the soldiers and civilians who will be saved, if if not all of them are.

I heard Murtha on NPR this morning, and almost choked the dog as I gave him a virtual Hi 5.

Yes, it would be fantastic if 2/3 of both houses could simply say "No." That's not going to happen...at least not until the Iraqi "Tet Offensive" causes a disaster beyond our imaginations.

Meanwhile Murtha shows his own genius. No one can be deployed more than twice, no one can be deployed without adequate training and equipment...Can any Republican vote against that?

(Forget I asked. I'm watching Olbermann as I write, and the Republicans are actually voting to cut veterans' benefits and raise their health care deductibles!)

in the form of non-binding resolutions may be becoming a "nibble" in restriction requirements.  But it's still a long way away from being a "bite" out of the criminal war in Iraq.

"..i would sympathize...."-- I really hope that you are kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For crying out loud, for the past 6+ years, we have been effed over by these bastards. They have taken away habeus, they kave killed untold numbers of kids and adults thru their dismantling of the watchdog  structure of our government. They are running the most corrupt and despised country in the eyes of the world and you write-- I would sympathize....
There is no hope!-- Seriously though, if the dems finally have awakened, maybe, just maybe they have discovered a method by which they can force the piece of garbage harboring at 1600.  Might I point out that in the past 6+ years, the only time that the dems have gained any press and at least a smidge of success was when they forced the shutdown of the gov. Sure, it was symbolic but eff them.
In my humble but angry opinion, screw them. Stop this horror anyway possible. Just stop it!
