Lieberman Wants Another Friedman

by BooMan
Mon Feb 26th, 2007 at 07:42:34 AM EST

Joe Lieberman has done it again. He has taken to the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal to call for another six months of war in Iraq (aka one more Friedman unit).

I appeal to my colleagues in Congress to step back and think carefully about what to do next. Instead of undermining Gen. Petraeus before he has been in Iraq for even a month, let us give him and his troops the time and support they need to succeed.

Gen. Petraeus says he will be able to see whether progress is occurring by the end of the summer, so let us declare a truce in the Washington political war over Iraq until then. Let us come together around a constructive legislative agenda for our security: authorizing an increase in the size of the Army and Marines, funding the equipment and protection our troops need, monitoring progress on the ground in Iraq with oversight hearings, investigating contract procedures, and guaranteeing Iraq war veterans the first-class treatment and care they deserve when they come home.

We are at a critical moment in Iraq--at the beginning of a key battle, in the midst of a war that is irretrievably bound up in an even bigger, global struggle against the totalitarian ideology of radical Islamism. However tired, however frustrated, however angry we may feel, we must remember that our forces in Iraq carry America's cause--the cause of freedom--which we abandon at our peril.

This time he avoided giving us rose-colored characterizations of the situation in Iraq. Instead he relied on newness of General Petraeus' mission as the rationale to stay the course. Why must we stay the course?

Tamping down this violence is more than a moral imperative. Al Qaeda's stated strategy in Iraq has been to provoke a Sunni-Shiite civil war, precisely because they recognize that it is their best chance to radicalize the country's politics, derail any hope of democracy in the Middle East, and drive the U.S. to despair and retreat.

Nowhere does Lieberman acknowledge the allegations of Sy Hersh:

BLITZER: Near the end of your article, you have this explosive point in there about John Negroponte, who is now going to be the deputy secretary of state, as opposed to the head of U.S. intelligence.

You write this: "I was subsequently told by the two government consultants and the former senior intelligence officials that the echoes of Iran-Contra were a factor in Negroponte's decision to resign from the National Intelligence directorship and accept the position of deputy secretary of state."

Explain what you were hearing, because that is obviously a very explosive charge.

HERSH: Yes. It is probably the single most explosive, if you will, or depressing — or distressing sort of thing I discovered in the last few months, which is simply this. This administration has made a policy change, a decision that they are going to put all of the pressure they can on the Shiites, that is the Shiite regime in Iran, the Shiite — and they are also doing everything they can to stop Hezbollah — which is Shiite, the Hezbollah organization from getting any control or any more of a political foothold in Lebanon.

So they essentially, I quote the — I saw Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, and he described it this way, as "fitna (ph)," the Arab word for "civil war." As far as he is concerned, we are interested in recreating what is happening in Iraq in Lebanon, that is Sunni versus Shia.

And in looking into that story, and I saw him in December, I found this. That we have been pumping money, a great deal of money, without congressional authority, without any congressional oversight, Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia is putting up some of this money, for covert operations in many areas of the Middle East where we think that the — we want to stop the Shiite spread or the Shiite influence.

They call it the " Shiite Crescent." And a lot of this money, and I can't tell you with absolute certainty how — exactly when and how, but this money has gotten into the hands — among other places, in Lebanon, into the hands of three — at least three jihadist groups.

There are three Sunni jihadist groups whose main claim to fame inside Lebanon right now is that they are very tough. These are people connected to al Qaeda who want to take on Hezbollah. So this government, at the minimum, we may not directly be funneling money to them, but we certainly know that these groups exist.

My government, which arrests al Qaeda every place it can find them and send — some of them are n Guantanamo and other places, is sitting back while the Lebanese government we support, the government of Prime Minister Siniora, is providing arms and sustenance to three jihadist groups whose sole function, seems to me and to the people that talk to me in our government, to be there in case there is a real shoot-'em-up with Hezbollah and we really get into some sort of serious major conflict between the Sunni government and Hezbollah, which is largely Shia, who are basically — or as you know, there is a coalition headed by Hezbollah that is challenging the government right now, demonstrations, sit-ins.

There has been some violence. So America, my country, without telling Congress, using funds not appropriated, I don't know where, by my sources believe much of the money obviously came from Iraq where there is all kinds of piles of loose money, pools of cash that could be used for covert operations.

All of this should be investigated by Congress, by the way, and I trust it will be. In my talking to membership — members there, they are very upset that they know nothing about this. And they have great many suspicions.

We are simply in a situation where this president is really taking his notion of executive privilege to the absolute limit here, running covert operations, using money that was not authorized by Congress, supporting groups indirectly that are involved with the same people that did 9/11, and we should be arresting these people rather than looking the other way…

Let's all write Joe Lieberman's office and ask him why he supports al-Qaeda and why he wants to destroy the Iraqi government that we set up. Does he just hate America? Does he hate our troops? Or does he work for our enemies now? (This is a joke).

The serious answer to Joe Lieberman is that the current plan will not work. No impartial person thinks it will work. And it especially will not work considering the overall strategy is anti-Shi'ite.

We have commander in chief that is incompetent who is being pushed around by a Vice-President that is insane. We should be more focused on impeaching them than on ending their war, but life's not fair sometimes. But giving this war-team another Friedman is not a sound plan. I have a lot of admiration for General Petraeus...he's a good Princeton man. But I am not an idiot. Get out of Iraq now.

Whatever happened to Joe's "No one wants to end the war in Iraq more than I do " schtick from last fall?

Oh right.  The CT voters were fooled into voting for him, and now he doesn't need them anymore.

I guess his CYA plan is that he said he wanted to end the war by leaving behind a stable Iraq in his campaign ads. (Link) Now that it's abundantly apparent that there is no way to do that, the only thing to do is to stay?  Haven't they ever heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

These people (Bush, Cheney, Lieberman) are totally delusional. and a bigger threat to our safety right now than the mythical terrorists.

Any ideology carried to its extreme is an exercise in insanity.

Lieberman is an ideologue, as is Cheney, as is any number of the idiots in charge of the executive branch.  Note I don't name Bush here, since he is far too intellectually lazy to be an ideologue, and far too lazy period to be in charge of anything that is being done on his behalf.  He may be the "decider" but every decision has already been pre-selected for him.

Although Bush is a weak man, which makes it easy for people like Cheney to manipulate him, I include him in the mix because he's just as evil through laziness as they are through hard work.

If you pick up the latest Foreign Affairs, the first two articles are a rather devastating attack on the current policy in Iraq (first article) and Iran (second article).

I know Bush doesn't read, but perhaps Lieberman does.

And I KNOW people HERE read!

I am no fan of Harry Reid on social issues, but on foreign policy maybe.  His statement below needs to be bannerized (my word) into a political movement that can be pinned on conservative Republicanism in preparation for the next election.

"This war is a serious situation. It involves the worst foreign policy mistake in the history of this country," Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer."

You do not often hear the majority leader of the US Senate making such accusations!

Agree. Yesterday's segment of Late Edition, with Madeleine Albright, included the same statement, "the worst foreign policy mistake in the history of this country." I believe this is former Sec of State Albright's position. But coming from the majority leader of the Senate, it makes a greater impact.

Just like GWB, Lieberman is another distraction, another leak in the dike to plug, to keep us wasting energy and focusing on the real tasks at hand, stopping the Occupation and preventing the bombing or Iran.
