McCain Flirted With the Democrats

The Hill has a highly amusing story about how John McCain almost became an independent in 2001 that would have caucused with the Democrats. After the 2000 election, the Senate was split 50-50. That meant that Cheney had to break ties, but it also meant that the Republicans controlled the committee chairs. As soon as the Bush administration came into office they began acting quite differently than the way they had portrayed themselves in the campaign. They also refused to hire anyone that had worked for McCain's campaign. As a result, three senators considered bolting the GOP and flipping control of the Senate to the Democrats. The senators were Jim Jeffords of Vermont, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, and John McCain of Arizona.

Throughout the spring, the Democrats had secret negotiations with all three senators. In the end, it was Jim Jeffords that flipped. That happened on May 24, 2001 and it has a happy day in my household. After Jeffords flipped, the negotiations with McCain and Jeffords petered out. I assume that is because it wasn't worth giving up committee chairs to them just to add to their majority.

The funny things is that McCain's people are now denying that there ever were any negotiations. That's obviously because his flirtation with the Democrats isn't going to be popular with Republican primary voters. But there are plenty of people that can corroborate the story.

Other senators who played major roles in the intense recruiting effort, according to Democrats, were then-Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) as well as Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

“John [Edwards] at that time was working with McCain on a couple things and there was a sense that because of his relationship that he might be a good person to talk to him,” Daschle said. “He was clearly one of those that we thought could be helpful.”

A source close to Edwards said Daschle’s comments are accurate.

Daschle also said, “Both Sen. Reid and I talked to [McCain] both individually and together.”

No one will get very far calling Tom Daschle a liar. No one is going to believe that.

My biggest fear is that the 2008 presidential election is going to be a repeat of the 2006 Connecticut election. McCain will lose the primary but run as an independent and win.

This is unlikely. Left-leaning people are beginning to see through his 'maverick' image, and independents know that he's the go-to guy on the right to keep pushing the grand delusion that Iraq is going well.

If he ran as an independent, he wouldn't be the next Joe Lieberman, he'd be more like the next Jacob Javits.

McCain has spent too much of the intervening time attempting to depict himself as a pillar of the status quo.  Jumping ship is not going to do anything to enhance his credibility.

If Democrats are smart they'll push the real McCain -- the one who thinks Baghdad's streets are safe to walk down and who apparently believes six other impossible things before breakfast. They'll also push him as a Republican no matter how he runs.

I for one welcome our new Twitter overlords. @Omir55

as an independent, I would never, ever vote for this traitor.  he is a fraud....just take my word for it.  He is a true blue republican...always has been and always will be...maybe at times a moderate, but none-the-less, a true blue party member.

...but he brought the wingnuts home to meet mama.

No way he could win as an independent.  Once the gloves come off (all hail the netroots!) and people start to see the real McCain, he'll be in even worse shape than he is now.

McCain is old, he's sick, he has a nasty-ass temper, and is a terrible liar.  That last is a problem, because he's been lying a lot lately and been getting caught at it.

If he did decide to run, my guess is that he'd split the party, like Anderson did in '84.  Welcome home, democratic president.
