Any predictions for the rest of the month? Things are going to be heated. That much I know.

Display:
can we start heating up the weather? We don't seem to be able to get above 50 degrees this week.

On another note, looks like Bushco's abstinence-only experiment can finally officially be called a failure, and of course, they chose to release the report late today, with no announcement.  From the linked article:

"After 10 years and $1.5 billion in public funds these failed abstinence-only-until-marriage programs will go down as an ideological boondoggle of historic proportions," said James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth.

"The tragedy is not simply the waste of taxpayer dollars, it is the damage done to the young people who have been on the receiving end of distorted, inaccurate information about condoms and birth control. We have been promoting ignorance in the era of AIDS, and that's not just bad public health policy, its bad ethics".

Gee, is anyone surprised at this?

We are having problems in Louisiana, Booman.  John Breaux will not run

http://blog.nola.com/times-picayune/2007/04/breaux_says_he_wont_run.html

the attorney general's opinion was a bit equivocal, and the republican machine has spent over $100,000 smearing him on television, and apoligists in the press have also assisted in this invalidation of Breaux.

Now we are left with two options:  either former US Rep. Chris John or Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu.

Something has to happen fast.

That is fine.  He is not running.  So a substitute has to be found.  And besides, anything is better than Piyush "Bobby" Jindal.  I plan to be productive about this, and I thought I would give you the opportunity to be so too.

And I will just say that he has done more for my state than any of the vaunted Democrats mentioned at this site.  So while I understand some have their reservations, as do I, the man has helped my state's party apparatus.  I just do not find the vituperative reaction productive, and now my state has to find another Democratic frontrunner.  You can imagine why I recoil when reading your comment.  Richard Ieyoub may run, and maybe he is someone you and others can support.  I am probably more to the Left than anyone here, but I have to find a way to defeat Jindal in my state.  So I will take what I can get.  And remember, I opposed Karen Carter for a reason, and I am happy to announce that one of the candidate's she beat in the jungle primary, Regina Bartholomew, is now running for the state House against another DINO.  I hope you understand why I am reeling at the moment, but I am pissed and somewhat ignited.

I remember you complaining about the anti-Jefferson candidate being in the DLC.  Now you could care less.

No, that was not the case at all.  Look, I am a Breaux supporter only because Jindal cannot win.  If Jindal wins here, you can bet he will be at your back door in 2014 for the Presidency.  Breaux was one way of stopping him.  Foster Campbell is still running, and votes will be cast for him, but Breaux is the man who can win this race.  Now others I find more palatable are running.

So who did you support between Casey and Santorum, Booman?  This is where I am right now with this race, and I do not appreciate being called DLC.

Didn't you recently post a comment about how much you love Cantwell, and are you not slamming Obama at every opportunity, and are you not endorsing Breaux and talking up Landrieu?

You seem to love the DLC with an uncommon devotion.

I know Landrieu, and I love Cantwell on energy and women's rights.  I also have a tendency to respect politicians who are women.  When it comes to Louisiana politics, which is, by the way, a Southern state, and a state wedged between Texas and Mississippi that just recently lost a large portion of its Democratic base, I will take what I can get.  Is Breaux my first choice?  No.  Was Mary Landrieu ever my first choice?  No.  But do they win statewide?  Yes.  And does this contribute to a majority nationwide?  Yes.  Will I support a DLC candidate in Orleans Parish?  Absolutely not, as there is no reason Karen Carter or Bill Jefferson should hold that seat.  And is not your friend Mr. Murphy from Pennsylvania DLC and a Blue Dog?  Is he in Ellen Tauscher's NDC?  Yes and yes.  Do I question your integrity as you have mine because of this?  No.  And do I not have the right to question candidates I do not trust?  Yes.  And should I trust Obama?  He is yet to give me a reason.    So do not give me an argument about consistency, because you fail that test.  And look, I am here trying to focus attention on a state that is damaged.  I care about it, and I want to prevent a Republican takeover.  We are poor, and we need help.  And the woman I tried to tout here, Deborah Langhoff, was anything but DLC.  She is an activist, and she cares about the people she desires to serve.  In fact, she is a movement candidate who wants to clean up the mess I have in my state.
I do not understand this hostility.  I just want to direct a focus to my state, because we need help.  Now if there is something you want to address with me, then do it directly.  If my opposition to Obama is offensive, then tell me directly.  I do not even know why I am having this argument with you.  People at other blogs are responding well, and they want to discuss solutions.  Why are you attacking me?

Patrick Murphy is a blue dog.  He seems to want to ally himself with 'national defense' democrats.

But he ran against the war and has kept his promises.

Okay.

Booman, I want to speak with you, not at you.

I LOATHE BOBBY JINDAL.  You know this.  A candidate I supported was smeared because that was my signature line.  I will vote for anything that can beat him.  To be honest, Foster Campbell should win, and I will vote for him in the open primary.  You see, in Louisiana, we are similar to France.  The first vote is the vote from the heart, as we say.  The second is the vote one makes out of civic responsibility.  Think of French liberals who had to vote for Chirac for fear of an even worse conservative.  You just have to do it.  So for me, I would support Breaux in a runoff, but I would support someone else with the hope that maybe the would make the runoff, but they probably will not.  But I also know my vote will help propel them to something else, especially if others join me.  So Ieyoub or Campbell have my support, but we need a big field in the jungle primary if we want to stop Jindal.

This is why I wrote my diaries on Karen Carter.  You cannot win in Louisiana by waiting for the runoff.  You have to set up the open primary, and set it up in a way that makes the presumed frontrunner fail to win outright.  You have to get them in the runoff, and this means creating a field that splits the state geographically and politically in at least four ways.  Breaux would have cut into the center and took votes from Acadiana, which would have been a huge dent in Jindal's supposed base.  Campbell cuts from the north, and the other Republicans cut into Jindal into his backyard.  Are you following me?

So Breaux is out.  Now who can get that Acadiana vote?  Chris John, who is also DLC.  Ieyoub, unfortunately, is also from LA-07, but he won statewide as Attorney General 3 times.  But he also lost to Blanco and Mary Landrieu, and he is not very fond of them.  Ieyoub is a great guy.  I love him.  He is a Louisiana liberal, much more to the left than Breaux, Blanco and Landrieu.  Let us hope he gets in.  Mitch Landrieu should not run, as he will lose, and then the Jindal goons will use that as ammunition to eject the Landrieus out of the state, as everyone in the state knows that Mary is a liberal who only became a centrist when she ran statewide.  But they still buy into the fiction she performs for us.

I hope my position on Breaux and Landrieu is explained.  Outside of the River Parishes and Orleans Parish, I am a rare breed, so I cannot expect to have my every desire fulfilled in state politics.  But Jindal must be stopped at all costs.

I will vote for anything that can beat him.

Might as well move to PA and vote for Casey.

Be careful what you wish for, you will get it. Quit settling. Walk away from the institutional Donklephant party and support something better, up to and including letting them lose until they move left. Otherwise, you may as well bring back the OLD D south, the Dixiecrats and Jim Crow, which was overwhelmingly a DEMOCRATIC PARTY creation.

I agree he's bad, but if you're not careful the national party will shove a rightwing aisle crosser, which in my opinion is worse. Look at the damage Casey is already doing.

And this is not about John Breaux; it is about Bobby Jindal's takeover of my state.  I apologize if you do not care that 4 million of us are going to be ruled by a fundamentalist who is tied to Tom DeLay.  I thought this was a progressive blog.  And this is one of the few races that will matter in 2007.

And since when is support for Obama a sign of one's progressive politics?  Was he not just handing Bush emergency supplementals with no compromise on national televsion?  Sorry, but I expect more from a President.  And besides, Obama triangulated his way so deeply into the DLC that he borrowed his way out of from within, which to me makes him an exponentiated version of Hillary Rodham Clinton.  Sorry, but I do not buy the media inspired and hypercommodified Obamarama many in the blogosphere are pimping around with a vengeance.

To change the subject: why the extreme blogosphere hate of Kucinich?  I don't get it.  I heard him speak at a small Dem mtg in San Antonio - he was incredible.  My son saw him today at harvard - he was incredible.  And it's not just "he doesn't have a chance" - it's nasty hate-ish stuff.  Like he's sort of the Cheney of the Left.  Who can 'splain me?

Dennis Kucinich is wonderful. He is my #1 candidate. Sadly, he doesn't have a chance. I haven't seen any "rabid" hatred of him though...

I haven't seen hatred of him either, just that no one takes him seriously as a viable candidate.  He's an elfin sort of man-boy who has a refreshing candor and can say what the serious candidates dare not say.  I don't think he even takes HIMSELF seriously.
