Kucinich to File Articles of Impeachment Against Cheney

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the most liberal of the Democratic presidential candidates in the primary field, declared in a letter sent to his Democratic House colleagues this morning that he plans to file articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney.
Kucinich has made ending the war in Iraq the central theme of his campaign. He has even taken aim at the leading Democratic presidential candidates in the field for their votes on authorizing the war. [...]
Sources tell the Sleuth that in light of the mass killings at Virginia Tech Monday, Kucinich's impeachment plans have been put on hold. There will be no action this week, they say.
Kucinich's office had no comment on the Congressman's "Dear Colleague" letter -- which apparently was drafted over the weekend, before the school massacre -- or on what the focus of articles of impeachment against Cheney would be. [...]
Here is the text of his letter, a copy of which was forwarded to the Sleuth:
April 17, 2007
Dear Colleague:
This week I intend to introduce Articles of Impeachment with respect to the conduct of Vice President Cheney. Please have your staff contact my office . . . if you would like to receive a confidential copy of the document prior to its introduction in the House.

I suppose it will be dismissed by his "less liberal" colleagues, but at least history will record one member of Congress who saw the crimes of Dick Cheney as suitable for removal from office. And yes, starting with Cheney is the right move.

I agree. In addition to the fact that he's likely to be guilty of more stuff than Bush, under no circumstances do I want to see Darth Cheney as Commander in Chief, even for a little while.

when Congress passes the following law:

All laws passed since December 2000 are hereby repealed.

All appointments approved or accepted since December 2000 are hereby rescinded.

Not that I am holding my breath . . .

This is another reason for me to like Kucinich. It's a damn shame he is completely unelectable at the Presidential level. Kucinich and Edwards are the only actual liberals running, and Kucinich is definitely the more liberal of the two.

What's good about it? It's premature and Kucinich's reputation outside a small circle of like-minded progressives (of which I count myself) is bupkis. I don't see any particular upside to this. Much better to let the pot boil for two more months. Things are developing very rapidly right now, and this is a distraction. Cheney will get his in due time. Now is not the time.

I have to agree with you and say that I can't get at all excited about this.

We'll get a better idea if this is the right move once we see the articles of impeachment. I wonder if they will be about things that Bush did to, or offenses that might be seen as specific to Cheney, such as the outing of Plane.

At this point there seems to be more anger from the public directed at Bush than at Cheney; that's why this strikes me as something that isn't going to have much traction.

I don't know what Kucinich's strategic thinking is here. If this leads to hearings that look into matters that can't be investigated in any other way, then it's probably a good move.
