habeas corpus redux: anybody seen the dems?

by dada
Mon Jul 16th, 2007 at 11:37:00 AM EST

a few weeks ago l wrote this brief diary asking the question: why haven't the democrats signed on as cosponsors of S.185? A bill to restore habeas corpus for those detained by the United States.

at that time there were 22 cosponsors, and shortly thereafter sen Byrd signed on. since then 6 more have joined in support of the amendment bringing the number to 29 .which still leaves us guessing where the others are and why they haven't stepped forward to vigorously support this restoration of one of the corner stones of our constitution and rule of law.

the list of senators who still haven't signed up and contact information below the fold...

here's the list of senators who still haven't signed up:

Daniel Akaka (D-HI)
Max Baucus (D-MT)
Evan Bayh (D-IN)
Robert Casey (D-PA)
Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
Tim Johnson (D-SD) [medical condition]
Herb Kohl (D-WI)
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)
Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
Patty Murray (D-WA)
Ben Nelson (D-NE)
Mark Pryor (D-AR)
Jack Reed (D-RI)
Harry Reid (D-NV)
Charles Schumer (D-NY)
Jon Tester (D-MT)
James Webb (D-VA)
Ron Wyden (D-OR)

and to make it even easier, you can find contact information HERE for all 100 of them....so, if you've got a d that's not on the sponsor list, or an r for that matter, now might be a good time to let them know this is important, and that it should be a truly bipartisan undertaking

They were too busy considering the merits of Lieberman's Iran amendment to bother about habeas corpus.  Priorities, man!  Priorities!

Maybe they know that if they sign on, they, or their families, will be disappeared?

I sent my email to Bayh. I have my doubts about the lord of playing-it-safe supporting this, though.

according to christ hardin smith at fdl, time's a-wastin':

...(S.185 has morphed into S.2022 as a potential amendment to the defense bill currently under debate.)  I am told through the Congressional grapevine that a vote on the amendment is likely for Tuesday -- that's tomorrow!...

The Anti-Christ is in favor of habeas corpus? And Jon Tester and James Webb, our dkos maverick super guy guys of Campaign 2006 are against it? Does not compute.
