Thanks for beating me to the punch. My essay, The makings of the US-Iran (Israel Proxy) War, is no longer necessary. I had just received this appeal for grass-roots action from Just Foreign Policy and responded. Israel's representative in the Senate, Joe Lieberman (along with Senator Kyl), is at it again attempting to wag the dog and get the US involved in a military confrontation with Iran. It must be stopped.

The text of their message was as follows:

The Senate is scheduled to vote as early as today on an amendment that, if passed, would dangerously escalate our government's conflict with Iran.

President Bush has intensified his conflict with Iran, both rhetorically and by authorizing military actions against Iranians in Iraq. U.S. forces have arrested Iranian officials in Iraq even when these officials were in Iraq at the invitation of the supposedly sovereign Iraqi government.

The American people on counting on the Congress they elected to rein in the administration and prevent another war. But by voting for this amendment, the Senate could move us closer to another disastrous war.

The Kyl-Lieberman amendment, if passed, would put the Senate on the record supporting the "use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq," including military force, to "combat, contain, and roll back" Iran's influence in Iraq. Such provocative language could be used by the President's lawyers as support for war with Iran.

By approving this dangerous amendment, the Senate would also be endorsing the aggressive step of designating part of Iran's army a "terrorist organization." The Washington Post reported in January that skeptics in the intelligence community, State Department and Defense Department worry this step "could push the growing conflict between Tehran and Washington into the center of a chaotic Iraq war."

The Bush administration and its allies in the military have kept up a steady drumbeat of unproven allegations that Iran is arming insurgents in Iraq. The sponsors of this amendment recite those allegations, ignoring the total lack of evidence supporting them.

Instead of confrontation, we need dialogue and diplomacy with Iran.

Debating Ahmadinejad at Columbia

A tall man with white hair, wearing a US-flag print shirt and pants, patrolled the sidewalk at 116th and Broadway. He waved a huge American flag as he marched, in movements that were nearly metronomic in their consistency. Stacks of brochures sat on a bare and rickety table, waiting to be handed out to anyone who didn't look away quickly enough. Bystanders stared.

I hadn't been back to my former school almost since I graduated. Returning as an alumna of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the school that sponsored Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's talk here on Monday, I felt the puff of pride that Columbia had not backed down in the face of media pressure. I also felt just a little bit cheated that it was happening now, when I was attending as an outsider, rather than the first time his talk had been announced, in 2006, when I was still a sleep-deprived student.

The police officers stationed in and around the university, beginning at the platform of the subway that I had taken to get there, looked at everyone suspiciously. Women in dark, severe suits monitored the entry of the press, taking signatures and examining credentials. Everywhere, people in uniforms directed the human traffic and at certain entrances demanded identification. Fliers lined the walkway to the main quadrangle and littered the brick paths. Students milled around the campus, talking excitedly in tight groups or listening to the speakers outside Low Library. Homemade placards offered silent counterpoint to some of the speeches delivered at the podium.  AHMADINEJAD IS NOT IRAN JUST LIKE BUSH IS NOT AMERICA," said one. "WE SAY NO TO WAR ON IRAN," proclaimed another. And a third, my favorite, in black paint on a wood sheet: "FREE SPEECH FOR ALL, EVEN DOUCHE BAGS.

You are seriously misinformed.  Or, blinded by bias.  You should read Glenn Greenwald at Salon.com said today about the Beltway pundits.  I would put what Sullivan told you in that category.

Then you should read the vision statement of The Project for a New American Century.

Then today's NYTimes -- review of the first chapter of Melsheimer and Walt's book on The Israel Lobby.

You can call it anti-semitism all you want.  You can distort the truth till you are blue in the face.

When we are in World War III -- or, as your friend Norman Podhoretz calls it -- World War IV -- and the country ....and a LOT of countries are completely devastated -- your distortions will become obvious....even to you.

Lieberman-Kyl amendment being revised.

REID: There are efforts being made before we vote on them to modify those two amendments, because people have issues with both of those amendments. So, until we finalize what they really want to do, I think it would be unwise for me to say that I support Kyl-Lieberman, or don't support it. I think I have to wait until I see what they are finally going to come up with, because some people have some real substantive problems with what's in that Kyl-Lieberman amendment.
