Update [2008-1-15 21:3:46 by BooMan]: NBC calls Michigan for Romney.

This is from National Review Online, so all caveats apply.

And The First Exit Polls in Michigan Say...

I'm surprised no one else has put this up yet. I'm hearing the first round of exit polls have Romney 35, McCain 29, Huckabee 15, Ron Paul 10, Giuliani 4. This doesn't count absentee ballots.

If this holds, the networks will be able to announce shortly after 9 p.m. eastern time...

Of course, all the standard disclaimers apply, and the later voters may differ from the early rounds, and the polls are still open, so if you're a Michigander, go out and vote for your favorite.

I'll be quite pleased with such a result.

Update [2008-1-15 20:39:15 by BooMan]: The official results will be posted here but it may be quicker to check with CNN for updates as the results roll in.

Update [2008-1-15 20:57:55 by BooMan]: With 7% reporting:

Romney 29,961 38%
McCain 24,656 31%
Huckabee 12,608 16%

wow, with 83% of the vote in Clinton only has 56%.

If uncommitted can break 40% it will be a victory for uncommitted.

Well, I have to take this with a grain of salt.  From CNN Ticker:
Despite urging from some activists like Daily Kos' Markos Moulitsas that Michigan Democrats vote for Mitt Romney over John McCain, CNN exit polling indicates the Arizona Republican won the liberal vote.

McCain captured 41 percent of Democrats who voted in the Republican primary, 10 points more than Romney. Mike Huckabee meanwhile, only captured 14 percent of Democrats.

Moulitsas, in an entry on his blog last Thursday entitled "Let's have some fun in Michigan," called on Michigan's Democratic voters to abandon the meaningless Democratic primary and vote for Romney in the state's binding Republican primary. By doing so, Moulitsas argued, Democrats could further muddle the Republican contest and most importantly, reduce the threat of McCain, who polls show is the biggest threat to their nominee in the head-to-head general election contest.

Though the bloggers' calls were not heeded, CNN's Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider points out they got what they wanted.

"The bloggers got what they wanted: Romney won. The Republican race is muddled. McCain's momentum is halted. It's just that the bloggers weren't the ones who did it!," he said.

Heh heh, those nutty bloggers!!!

Though the Democratic primary race was rendered essentially meaningless after party sanctions, few Democrats decided to vote in the Republican primary -- according to the exit polling, Democrats only constituted 7 percent of the vote in that contest.

Har, har, har goes the mainstream media!  Those DFH weren't any more significant than those knots on ol' Fred Thompson's shiny bald head.

The nerve of them to think they could effect a Romney victory.  Uh..........wait a minute, but Romney won---BIG.

Oh...nevermind.

80% of precincts reporting:

Clinton 57%
Uncommitted 38%
Kucinich 4%
Other 1%

Interestingly, the only county going for "uncommitted" in numbers greater than Clinton was Washtenaw County, the most liberal county in the state, site of the U of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

.
Kos may claim victory for Romney in Michigan, however the Democratic vote (7%) did not go to Romney, but to McCaine. The disenfranchised Democrats usually throw their support in the ring for John McCaine, backed by Lieberman.

African-Americans voted "uncommitted" instead of Clinton

According to the CNN Exit Poll only 37% chose undecided - but maybe the polls are wrong!  And undecided got a lot of late minute undecideds!

More young voters choses undecided:

According to CNN exit polling, 48 percent of voters ages 18-29 voted for "uncommitted." Thirty-nine percent supported Clinton and 9 percent voted for Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Of voters ages 30-44, 48 percent also chose "uncommitted" and 46 percent went with Clinton, exit polls said.

More stats on Undecided from CNN:

roughly 70 percent of Michigan's African-American voters -- a group that makes up a quarter of Michigan's Democratic electorate -- did not cast their votes for Clinton, choosing the "uncommitted" option instead. Yet these voters weren't uncommitted at all: in fact, according to CNN exit polls, they overwhelmingly favored Barack Obama, whose name did not appear on the ballot.

And from the Republican side:

Most of Michigan's Republican voters had the same thing on their mind -- the economy, according to exit polling.

A majority of Michigan Republican primary voters -- 55 percent -- said the economy is the most pressing issue facing the nation.

That compares to 18 percent who said Iraq, 14 percent who named illegal immigration, and 10 percent who pointed to terrorism.

I think the Republicans are barking up the wrong tree on illegal immigration in the northern states. It was found not to be a big issue among voters in Iowa either.

I don't understand this:

Almost half of those who said they felt enthusiastic about the Bush administration voted for Romney, compared with 16 percent for McCain.

Poor McCain - lockstep with Bush and the Bush lovers still went for Romney.

by maryb2004 on Tue Jan 15th, 2008 at 11:28:38 PM EST
I dunno.  Romney is the guy attacking anyone that criticizes Bush.

It looks like 3 out of ever 4 Black voters voted against Hillary and for "Undecided" in the Michigan Caucus. We know that that means - kiss your truce goodbye...

OK, this is hilarious:

The Michigan Republican Party mistakenly sent out a news release Tuesday night congratulating John McCain for winning the state's GOP primary.
* * *
"In a close-fought victory, Senator John McCain succeeded again (in) the Michigan Republican primary, winning over a traditionally unpredictable voter base in Michigan."
