That should cause a few aneurysm, especially in the reactionary quadrant of the blogosphere who don't realize that he's called Professor for a reason (i.e. he has a day job, unlike William Kristol).

Australia's leading progressive economist John Quiggin observes that

The rules of the prize, honoured more in the breach than in the observance in economics, say that it is supposed to be given for a specific discovery, and Krugman is cited for his groundbreaking work in the economics of location done from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.
The reality, though, is that economics prizes are awarded for careers. Krugman's early work put him on the list of likely Nobelists, but his career took an unusual turn around the time of the 2000 election campaign. While he has still been active in academic research, Krugman's career for the last eight years or more has been dominated by his struggle (initially a very lonely one) against the lies of the Bush Administration, its supporters and enablers. Undoubtedly, the award of the prize in this of all years, reflects an appreciation of this work on behalf of truth in economics and politics more generally.

If you're looking for an indicator of the long political/cultural swing we're seeing, consider the path from Milton Friedman to Paul Krugman. I wonder if the dumbfucks of CNBC will still keep shouting Krugman down with their idiocies, should he still deign to grace them with his company.

As one who likes to see patterns and ironies where none probably exist, I also think it's interesting that in almost the same month, the University of Chicago's economic cred has been shot down by the Swedes while one of its own is about to become president.

I'm very happy for Paul. We shared an office his first year at Yale, when he was right out of grad school. I was blown away by his ability. He wasn't just good, he's gifted. He's also a great guy, thoughtful and compassionate. It is fabulous that they gave it to him solo. That doesn't happen much anymore. The Chicago economists are gnawing their tongues as we speak.
