Open Letter to Senator McCain

by Steven D
Tue Oct 21st, 2008 at 08:23:36 AM EST

I, and many like me, have questioned your honor over the course of this Presidential election season, and with good reason, but today I am appealing to it.

For quite some time now your campaign has degenerated into a hate fest with robocalls essentially calling Obama a terrorist for an association with Bill Ayers far less extensive than your own relationship with G. Gordon Liddy, a convicted felon a man who once publicly called for people to shoot federal law enforcement officers, a man you refused to denounce recently when questioned about him by David Letterman. Instead you embraced him as an old friend and said you were proud of your relationship with him, something Obama has never said about Mr. Ayers.

Your running mate has held rallies where shouts of "muslim", "terrorist", "Obama bin Lyin" and "Kill him" (i.e., Obama) have been uttered by your supporters, the same people you defend when questioned about them. Your demonization of ACORN at the last debate, a non-profit community organization which registers poor and minority voters, has led to nasty, racist death threats against its members, even though its rate of disputed voter registrations is much less egregious than previous Republican affiliated registration drives. Your running mate Sarah Palin has stated in her speeches that she prefers campaigning in the Pro-America parts of the country (i.e., small towns) while your own campaign spokeswoman, Nancy Pfotenhauer, has divided Virginia into two parts, "real Virginia" (i.e., where people more likely to vote for you live) and "not real Virginia" (i.e., where Obama supporters are more likely to live). Your own brother referred to Northern Virginia as a communist country, and another supporter, Michelle Bachman called for a media witch hunt against Obama and other Democrats in Congress for their anti-American activities, comments reminiscent of the worst days of days of Joseph McCarthy.

I don't expect that your campaign is going to change its relentlessly negative and deeply offensive tactics at this late date. I don't expect you to denounce the nasty acts of people who have been riled up by your campaign's "low road" strategy or to denounce people who have called Colin Powell a racist for having the audacity and ingratitude to endorse your opponent. Frankly, after all that has gone on in the last few months, I don't expect much from you at all.

However, Barack Obama's grandmother is seriously ill. So ill she may be dying. Indeed, Obama likely spent a week in Hawaii before the Democratic convention in large part to be with his grandmother whose health was already deteriorating. In any event, at this time, she is so ill that Obama is taking time away from his campaigning this Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii, where she lives, to be with her. Only eleven days before the election. A time critical to any political campaign, as you well know. Yet, his love and concern for her is so great that he is risking time away from his campaign to be with her. A woman who helped raise him when his mother became a single parent after his father left her. An outstanding American in her own right. A person whom Barack Obama deeply loves and who loves him just as much.

And now she is deathly ill. I imagine all the slurs and negative ads and constant attacks on her grandson have contributed to her poor health. Stress over what might happen to a loved one will do that. I know politics is a rough game, and most politicians get thick skin, but it's not that easy for their families. I'm sure you can appreciate that after the attacks that were made against your character by President Bush in 2000 when he used the same robocall company you are employing right now to besmirch your character with false and misleading statements about you.

I am not asking for much, Senator McCain. I don't expect you to suspend your campaign because Senator Obama's beloved grandmother is seriously ill and he has made the decision that time with her is more important than time spent on his campaign. But for those two days, senator McCain, I am asking you to call off the attack dogs besmirching Senator Obama's character and reputation. And I am asking you to cancel your negative robocalls on Thurday and Friday out of respect for Mrs. Dunham, if not for her grandson, Senator Obama. Two days Senator McCain. Surely you can spare two days for a sick old woman who may be dying.

I'm sure it would do a world of good for Mrs. Dunham's health to hear that you had taken this step. The relentless attacks in the media on her grandson, and the death threats made against him, have no doubt taken their toll on her health, and anything you could do to alleviate her stress would certainly garner you some favorable press at a time when you could use some.

But more importantly, Senator McCain, it would be the right thing to do. The honorable thing to do. You frequently claim that you are a man of honor and integrity. We haven't seen much of that side of you in this campaign, but it's not too late to start.

Sincerely,

Steven D

The one thing that Democrats had gotten good at was in losing with dignity.  McCain seems to not know how to do this - he is effectively pursuing a scorched earth policy instead.

Once the campaign is over, Republicans will be baffled by the ill will that Democrats and Independents feel towards them.  To the Republicans, it is all just rhetoric that is spoken during a campaign...

To their politicians, perhaps.  But not to the party faithful who support these amoral cretins.  They mean every word of what they say.

A few decades ago there was a difference between the politicians and the cretins who vote for them.

Not anymore - the Michelle Bachmans and George Allens are not just the voting base of the party, they're the "elites" in the party.  The Republicans have elevated the cult of the Know-Nothing to the point where their politicians are idiots.

Which is a good chunk of the reason they're in this mess now.  The smart people have either been kicked to the curb or have left in disgust.

Honor?  Shit, I got a fiver says somebody on the GOP (not a blogger or El Rushbo, but an actual state/national GOP party official or McSame campaign official) denounces Obama's trip to Hawaii as:

  1. a campaign stunt to elicit sympathy,
  2. something that proves just how out of touch Obama is for being able to fly to Hawaii at a moment's notice,
  3. proof that Obama is using all that "suspect campaign money illegally for personal reasons",
  4. some combination of the above.

We're well past that point where the logic of appealing to what's left of McSame's honor is moot, Steven.

I'll match your $5 on that one.  Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if they accused her of not being his real grandmother or some such craziness.

Actually, our second response to the news was:  who will be first to call this a campaign stunt:  Limbaugh or O'Reilly?

This appeared in a local paper last week.  It is from a column by a gentleman, Vick Mickunas, who typically does book reviews.

This afternoon I stopped by the post office to mail a few letters. A dignified gentleman of my acquaintance was doing the same.

He was standing in front of me and as he began to drop his letter into the mail slot I could not help but notice that he was mailing a postage paid envelope addressed to McCain-Palin Victory 2008.

I was embarrassed to be caught snooping and I stammered something along the lines of "Oh, making a donation to push them over the top?"

He replied that he was not making a contribution but rather, he was sending a letter to explain why he wasn't making a donation. Then, he handed me a copy of the letter he was sending and expressed a desire to share his thoughts with John McCain and others.

Here's his letter:

16 Oct 08

McCain-Palin Victory 2008

Enclosed is your recent request for a contribution. I am not contributing - and am hereby providing a brief explanation.

I am an 82 year old, life-long, agriculturally-based Republican. I am a WWII vet. I have a long and favorable association with John McCain. I admire and appreciate him. For at least 10 years, I have contributed to his campains. I have not contributed to the present campain. For a wide variety of reasons, I favor Obama for President. I believe he has the attributes and characteristics that our country needs at this time. I believe the Bush administration has been the worst in American history - and I am an amature student of history. We need some "strong medicine" to "get over" Bush. I know John McCain is not Bush. Unfortunately, McCain is further colatteral damage" from Bush.

The cause of this present letter is a telephone message I received shortly before the letter arrived today. The message was from the McCain-Palin "organization." The call was extremely critical of Obama - strongly implying that he was a lying, traitor, etc. It was way "over the top." That call converted me from someone who liked McCain - but would vote for Obama - to someone who is intensely offended - and disappointed - in "what has happened to the John McCain that I know - and admired and appreciated."

"Come Home John McCain. We still need you! Don't bring Sarah.

Steven D,

Your open letter to McCain is a waste of good effort.
I've never liked the man He's a fraud.

I've never thought that McCain was honorable. He was always a scumbag in my book.

I was poking around regarding his connection with Singlaub and the World Anti-Communist League, a most amazing collection of fascists, racists and wackos. Anyone who could stay connected with WACL for six years, McCain probably disassociated himself when it became politically prudent, is not a very moral man. Talk about judgement.

WACL was a loose confederation of groups of "anti-communists", a better description was fascists. It was an historical continuation of Hitler's Anti-Bolshevik Bloc of Nations. In fact, the whole theory for the West tolerating and nurturing the Nazis in Germany was the idea of creating a "cordon sanitaire", a clean corridor between those nasty communists and the West's capitalist governments.

WACL was the perfect vessel for terrorism directed against any movement that was in any way egalitarian. Since their definition of communism was very flexible, much like McCain's definition of socialism, and anti-communism was their overriding moral trump card, a lot of innocent people around the world were murdered, tortured and brutally repressed by the governments and organizations represented in WACL.

The 1980s was the high-water mark for WACL, and that was when McCain was cozy with Singlaub and the gang. INSIDE THE LEAGUE, written back in those days, gives a good profile of the quality of the people who were hanging out with McCain back then.

I may write a blog about this for Dead Horse one of these days. In the meantime, forget the cover story about McCain being honorable. He's as honorable as Ronnie Reagan was a lovable uncle.
