RIP: Mitch Mitchell

Sad news. We've lost one of rock's greatest drummers:

Mitch Mitchell, the jazzy and versatile British drummer in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, died on Wednesday in a hotel in Portland, Ore. He was 62 and had recently finished a national tribute tour, Experience Hendrix. The cause was unknown, said Bob Merlis, publicist for the tour.

I saw this show in Portland. Both the original show in 2004, and this one mentioned in the article as being his last performance. He played on one song. Nobody mentioned his name, and the drummer who played as part of the backup band all night also played. No fanfare was made of this rock legend. I just noticed partway through a song that there were two drummers. Kind of sad really. In 2004 he played a large portion of the set list with Billy Cox on bass.

The show last friday was absolutely amazing, though. Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are both outstanding guitarists, and Hubert Sumlin is still solid as a rock. But Buddy Guy put everybody else in their place, as he always does. The man just has not slowed down at all.

Small known fact.

Hendrix the Great died on the Boomans first birthday.

Not claiming causation or anything, I just remember that.

We're getting old when our childhood heroes start dying off of old age.
