Deep Thought (Lame Duck ed.)

Something tells me that sending a mediocre concert pianist (and the most incompetent Secretary of State and National Security Adviser in a generation) to calm the tensions between India and Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks in the waning days of the least respected President in American history isn't going to accomplish a whole hell of a lot, especially when the people of India believe the Bush administration has been coddling Pakistan for years.

The people of India are right. We have been supporting military dictators in Pakistan against India ever since India became non-aligned. Cold warriors perceived India to be slipping into the Soviet orbit , so they built up Pakistan as a counterweight. The chickens came home to roost on 9-11-2001 and this policy failure (US attacked by our two Muslim "allies")was covered up by diverting attention to Iraq.

Never underestimate the power of stupid, especially in the Bush Admin and its waning days. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Condi could tear up a CampFire Girls' Accord during Christmas.

Lest we forget, the demented Bush is still capable of incalculable harm to himself, to the nation, to our NATO allies, to the Mideast and Southeast Asia, indeed. to the entire planet.

I hear that Nemesis has hired him for part time work: that is, completing a mission that is long overdue - answering the hubris of a nation that thought it could spend its way to empire.

Who would believe it? Retribution coming via the economy.

For the people who truly matter, there's been no retribution. They're doing spectacularly well. The economy & all the rest of us can go to hell.

The absolute corruption engendered by absolute power seems to define itself just this way -- in the utter degradation of everything but itself.

Well, really, Condi seems to have been appointed to her posts precisely because she was certain to be ineffectual in addressing the stated goals, which aren't actually the goals of the administration.

Once again, incompetence is relative.
