Mississippi Returns Thread

Tue Mar 11th, 2008 at 08:00:08 PM EST

Look at the people that support torture. I gotta wonder what Dennis Kucinich and Maxine Waters were thinking. They're concern trolls...or something.

There's a special election in Indianapolis (IN-07) today to keep an eye on.

CNN returns for Mississippi are here.

Update [2008-3-11 20:34:45 by BooMan]: MSNBC called it for Obama after a polite fifteen minutes. Still no returns in. Exit Polls are here.

How can Mississippi be "too early to call"? Do they need to wait to see if Obama's lead goes down??

maybe a time zone diff.

also the media likes drama and eyeballs. If they call it too early, ratings decline....gotta keep these primaries going. good for revenues...so they distort that it'll be a brokered convention - it's a tied race.

Btw - check out how CNN is sneaking info that Obama won Texas into its Mississippi victory piece:

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama will win Mississippi's Democratic primary, CNN projects.

Obama will also finish first in the Texas Democratic caucuses, which were held last week.

He will get more delegates out of the state than rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, who won the state's primary.

Nice!

It's one thing to want to vote for one of your own.

That's a different thing than not voting for someone who is not one of your own solely because of their race.

To Clarify, a Red Sox fan would not be accused of racism if they attended a Red Sox game facing an all-white team. But a Red Sox fan WOULD be accused of racism if they refused to attend a Red Sox game facing an all-black team. Slight but important difference.

I can look at OH and see that 80% of the white voters who said that race was a factor voted for Clinton and can see that that's racism.  I can not look at Clinton getting 70% of the white vote any where and say 'racism' because I don't know the motivation.

By your logic, Clinton winning the majority of women means they're sexist and her garnering old people means that they're ageist.

Like I said:  bullshit.

Exactly. But gender is a big part of why people vote for Clinton, and race is a big part of why people vote for Obama. But it's because they identify with those characteristics, not because they hate the opposing forces. I don't think most women vote for Hillary because they hate men! ;-)

Bill says that Hillary needs a BIG victory in Pennsylvania.  That means she needs to win big in the middle part of the state.  Ferraro's comments are aimed right there at all the lower income/ less educated white people who believe that white people are discriminated when they speak the 'truth' about how blacks get better treatment etc.  All this play that her remarks are getting tonight is a gold mine for Hillary with respect to that audience.

But in the end - I think it will further turn off the superdelegates from the west and upper midwest.

Yep, they keep rolling out that old "PA is Pittsburgh in the west, Philadelphia in the east and (white) Alabama in the middle." Ferraro's comments are directed at Alabama.

I also think they put Ferraro out there in the hope that somebody actually in the Obama campaign would say out loud and on television what everyone else in the world has been saying - that Geraldine was a token women on a Democratic ticket.  Then she and Hillary and their supporters can yell SEXISM!!!!

As far as I can tell, the Obama camp has been pretty disciplined and not pointed out the irony of Geraldine Ferraro saying all of this.

oh, and doing this during the Mississippi Primary is rich.

Geraldine Ferraro was picked to be the VP for Walter Mondale.

Walter Mondale was picked by Hubert Humphrey to mediate a dispute over the seating of a delegation at the 1964 Democratic convention.

The delegation was the racist Mississippi delegation which was being challenged by the Black Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.  Let's just say, the black delegation wasn't seated at the convention.

Don't tell me this whole thing wasn't planned.

I'm personally convinced they deliberately turned her loose to do exactly what she's done--she's pretty much wall-to-wall leading right into a racially sensitive southern primary crucial to Obama for "regaining" perceptual momentum. And it's not like Ferraro has to worry about flushing her "revered party elder" status down the crapper. Nobody's seen her for the last 20 years. She's got nothing to lose except her self-respect.

by Sprocket77 on Tue Mar 11th, 2008 at 09:23:47 PM EST

well, what do you know. Ain't this something:

Kos dug up some old Geraldine Ferraro stuff in Wapo. Her bona fides going back to 1988.

She's a certified racist with a long history of this shit

And former representative Geraldine A. Ferraro (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that because of his "radical" views, "if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race."

Asked about this at a campaign stop in Buffalo, Jackson at first seemed ready to pounce fiercely on his critics. But then he stopped, took a breath, and said quietly, "Millions of Americans have a point of view different from" Ferraro's.

Discussing the same point in Washington, Jackson said, "We campaigned across the South . . . without a single catcall or boo. It was not until we got North to New York that we began to hear this from Koch, President Reagan and then Mrs. Ferraro . . . . Some people are making hysteria while I'm making history."

(emphasis added, can't be helped.)

But here I am, black as could be...if lived in MS and were sitting on the fence, and heard Ferraro's remarks this morning.  You can bet my black ass would be voting for Obama.  Not because he's black, but because it's clear the Clinton's use race-baiting tactics.

Last night, I made phone calls and sent emails to my kin down in Mississippi, urging them to vote for Obama.  After extolling the virtures of Obama, some of them were still going to vote for Clinton.  All I had to do was mention all the race-baiting from the Clinton's.  One of my cousins jokingly said, "Why you bringin' up old shit?"  I pointed him to Ferraro's remarks from yesterday and that was all it took.

So you can call it racism if you'd like, but why should we have to vote for racists?

Hey Ed J

Hillary has played the race card, gender card ,the victim card-poor cheated wife card, and exaggerated her experience b/c she watched Bill do the presidency.

I'll give her some credit. She stood by her man.

On second thought, I take that back. Looks like she made a deal with Bill after the Monica thingy... something akin to this:

I'll stand by you but you'll atone to me, show me how sorry you are when I run for the presidency.

Guess what?

Bill has been marvelous: See dear how sorry I've been, I've been stumping the country and hurled a lot of racial slurs and mud, all for you, b/c I'm sooooo sorry.

The problem with the questions are that they are vague. If you ask did you vote for Clinton? Did you vote for her because she was white and Obama was black? You could follow up with do you think that blacks are unqualified for being President. Those kinds of questions pretty much answer what you wonder. Unfortunately, it's considered rude to ask those kinds of questions.

he's looking pretty good in the 3rd and 4th.  The 1st is iffy.  He might pull the 4th and the 1st.

Lemme see.

Right now he is not on pace to break 59.9%, but that could definitely change.

  1. too close to call
  2. 5-2 Obama
  3. 3-2 Obama
  4. 3-2 Obama
At-large: 6-5 Obama

So, right now, either 20-13 or 19-14.

If he goes over 59.9% he might scratch another delegate out.

Reagan kicked off his Presidential campaign near there with comments about "state's rights." In case anyone is unfamiliar with the expression, it was the rallying cry behind the segregation movement. Lee Atwater described the strategy after he developed a terminal disease and experienced a religious conversion.

See what Atwater said, it's very interesting and revealing. I'd post it but it uses the 'n' word.

On August 4, 1980, Ronald Reagan began his presidential campaign with a speech near Philadelphia, Mississippi at the annual Neshoba County Fair. During the speech, Reagan told the crowd, "Programs like education and others should be turned back to the states and local communities with the tax sources to fund them. I believe in states' rights. I believe in people doing as much as they can at the community level and the private level."[8] He went on to promise to "restore to states and local governments the power that properly belongs to them." --from Wikipedia
