On the Ground in PA

I think it's safe to say that the polls mean very little. Turnout looks very high in Obama's main areas.

In Philadelphia, turnout is reportedly “very heavy,” said Abe Amoros, the executive director of the state Democratic Party. In the counties surrounding Philadelphia, including Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and Chester, most polling stations have reported long lines.

The Democratic primary election in 2004 saw a 26 percent turnout, but this year promises to be much higher, Mr. Amoros said.

Turnout in Philly and the Burbs will determine the outcome. In 2004, Kerry beat Bush in Philadelphia Co. 542,000-130,000, for a 412,000 margin. In the 2002 gubernatorial primary, Rendell beat Casey 224,000-61,000, for a 163,000 margin. Kerry and Rendell each got about 80% of the vote, but with higher turnout Kerry netted an extra 250,000 votes.

The higher the turnout overall the better for Obama, because his areas are the most populated areas.

Where are they???

Are you going to DL?  I have my computer, and I need a beer.

I'm wondering who is going to DL too. Is it worth the effort to drive in or will folks just disappear to a party . . . .

I've got a thread on my neighborhood (Northern Liberties, Philly) message board inquiring about turnout:

http://pub50.bravenet.com/forum/4226496069/show/629159

So far, the word is good turn out, not overwhelming, no lines.

Remember in Philly, kids were not in school today, so some parents may be waiting until relief arrives home to get to the polls.

by lutton on Tue Apr 22nd, 2008 at 03:09:41 PM EST
I voted at 2 pm in Chester Cty. At that point 35% of the registered dems had already voted and 14% of the thugs. No lines then but it was an odd time. There will be lots more when parents come to pick up their kids and after regular work hours.

man I hope you're right because after those "I'll obliterate Iran" comments, I want Clinton's goose to be cooked.

Shit, i want that goose charred to a crisp.

Guardian UK reporter on the ground reports Obama campaign materials includes DVDs.

Clinton today dismissed the notion that she needed a large margin of victory to quell doubts about her candidacy.

"I think a win is a win. Maybe I'm old fashioned about that," she told reporters. "I think maybe the question ought to be, why can't he close the deal with his extraordinary financial advantage? Why can't he win a state like this one if that's the way it turns out ... big states, states that Democrats have to win."

[.]
Yesterday, in an interview with the Pittsburgh radio station KDKA, Obama said he did not anticipate emerging victorious from Pennsylvania. But he said: "I'm predicting it's going to be close and that we are going to do a lot better than people expect."

Even if Clinton were to secure the outsize victory she needs in Pennsylvania, figures for funding released yesterday raised questions about her ability to fight on.
[.]
Obama has been outspending Clinton by two or three to one on TV advertising and mailshots - some of which include DVDs. In the final hours before the primary, his ads have been inescapable on stations in the greater Philadelphia area, home to 40% of the state's Democratic voters.

Sarah Triplett arrived to vote this morning long before her suburban Philadelphia polling place opened and soon had plenty of company.

"I had to be here to vote, and I pray that Obama does make a big change in a very positive way," said Triplett, a "65-plus" woman from Levittown who works with the disabled.

In Allentown, where a line snaked out the door at First Presbyterian Church, 68-year-old Ellen Woolley, who works in finance, went for Clinton. Obama, she said, is a "marvelous speaker, but I really don't hear a lot of substance."

Wonder where I can get me one o' them DVDs.

And you gotta love that smoke screen about "a state a Democrat has to win." Just because she wins the state now doesn't mean he can't win it in November, and even if this were Magical Thinking Land and she were to win the nomination in August, a victory in the primary here doesn't mean she will take the state against McCain.

I'm so tired of this, and I'm not the only one. Yesterday I met up with our PCO on the bus heading to work. I hadn't seen him since the caucuses in February. We exchanged pleasantries, made some small talk, and as he got off the bus, he said something like "Well, hopefully this will all be over tomorrow." Amen, Ken.

ask BHO HQ.

Undecided SuperDs should note. Obama has his phone bankers working MS today. This guy is working for the Democratic Party in all 50.

from BHO camp website

GOTV Calls

Reports of heavy turnout in Pennsylvania continue to pour in, and supporters across the country are still working to help Get Out The Vote by making calls from home using our online phonebanking tools. After four weeks of campaigning, we're less than six hours away from the close of polls.

But from the beginning, the goal of this campaign has been to re-engage and re-connect people at all levels of government, across all fifty states, to work for a better future for our country. And though all eyes are on the Pennsylvania primary right now, it's not the only race taking place today. In Mississippi, a special election is being held today to fill a vacant Congressional seat in the 1st District, where Democratic candidate Travis Childers is running a close race in a traditionally Republican district.

Many people in MS-01 may not know about today's special election, so right now we're contacting our supporters in the area to let them know that today, they too have a chance to vote for change.

In a special election like this, even a small number of votes can make a difference. Polls are open in Mississippi until 7:00 PM CT tonight. If you have a few minutes to spare, you can help show that our grassroots movement is dedicated to change up and down the ballot.

HELP MAKE CALLS TO MISSISSIPI NOW

I did some phone banking in PA last night - 814 region; some undecideds leaning Obama. Had a few bitter ones for Clinton.

In 3 hrs it'll be over.

Well, "You can't vote for war and disown the results"
