Hate Mail

by BooMan
Thu May 15th, 2008 at 11:07:39 PM EST

I don't get much hate mail. I might get one piece every two months or so, and it usually just tells me I'm stupid. But then I don't have Bill O'Reilly stirring up the nativists, either. It's really disturbing to see the kind of mail that Markos gets. I know why liberals are angry...look at the economy, for starters. But why are Bill O'Reilly's listeners so angry? What explains the hatred of so many people on the right?

And, to be honest, I don't think this is an unusual situation. There seems to always be a certain percentage of people, in every country, that basically feel like Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter do (or say they do). It only becomes a serious problem when the group grows large enough to start putting their enemies up against the wall. As Roger Waters put it:

Are there any queers in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall!
There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me,
Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish!
And that one's a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint,
And another with spots!
If I had my way,
I'd have all of you shot!

I mean, how is that any different from what people are writing to Markos?

I don't worry so much about the ones with keyboard courage, the ones who zip emails or scribble on walls. The ones that concern me are the ones that you don't hear from - those are the ones who will actually act one the impulses that motivates the 'tards to scream into the ether-net.

I thought about it but it was too much work -- and I don't think the site supports putting drop-downs in a comment.

But yeah, you need to make it as simple as possible for these people. Basically a big red button that says "SEND HATE MAIL TO A LIBERAL BLOG" would be perfect.

what explains the hatred?

there's probably a different rhyme and reason behind each and every dead-ender ... but these days i'm sure that:

  1. witnessing the complete collapse of their worldview,

  2. with its attendant abandonment by the electorate,

  3. leading inexorably to what i'm dubbing november's "great republican diaspora",

... only adds more rocket fuel for the sheer misery that comes with having been proven so horribly horribly wrong for so long about absolutely everything.

and as the saying goes: misery wants company. still too cowardly to admit their own folly, they choose instead to attack those who had the temerity to strip them of their precious delusions.

i suppose they should be pitied:

there are men whom one hates until a certain moment when one sees, through a chink in their armor, the writhing of something nailed down in torment.

"What explains the hatred of so many people on the right?"

Interesting question. I think most people have no deep grasp of political questions or world affairs. Under other circumstances those on the right might have found other allegiances. But a frustrated, "bitter" person often has a psychological need to hate, and finds hating in public and in concert with others, and backed by major institutions, more satisfying than seething all by their little selves; they don't care what Fox news tells them, as long as it gratifies this psychological need. So they are drawn to the right, which encourages this mass hatred.  Just as emotion usually trumps reason in anyone gripped by a passion, so they follow the bright shiny objects in preference to policies that might be more in their own "interest," as the lefty rationalists see it. Look, people do self-destructive things every day, and derive satisfaction from the, Smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating and so on. This is similar.

I would just add that the left also has its psychological faults, but that is another story.

Wasn't Markos actually in the U.S. Army, unlike the boil-infested Limbaugh and nearly every other verbose right-winger?

That is correct.
