LA-06: Dan Cazayoux Wins!!

by BooMan
Sat May 3rd, 2008 at 11:21:26 PM EST

It looks like we have a new Democratic member of the House. With all precincts reporting, Don Cazayoux has pulled a stunning upset in Louisiana's Sixth District.

"Don" Cazayoux (D)- 49,702 49.20%
Louis "Woody" Jenkins (R) - 46,741 46.27%

Cazayoux was behind all night until some precincts in East Baton Rouge came in and erased an early, and seemingly unsurmountable, lead for Woody Jenkins. The Republicans will be pulling their hair out over this. They tried to tar Cazayoux by tying him to Nancy Pelosi and the Reverend Wright, and it didn't work. The Realignment continues!!

Not only that but the NRCC spent a huge percentage of their available cash trying to save this seat. I love it.

DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on Don Cazayoux's victory in the special election runoff in Louisiana's 6th Congressional District. With tonight's win, the Democratic majority in Congress has expanded to 235-198.

"Congratulations to Don Cazayoux on his hard fought victory. Don's independence and commitment to putting middle class Louisianans first inspired people from across the political spectrum to support his fight for change.

For the second time this cycle, Republicans were reminded that 'all politics is local.' House Republicans tried to nationalize this election, illegally coordinated with Freedom's Watch, used false and deceptive special interest smears, and funneled nearly a million dollars into a district that Republicans held for more than three decades. Don won by focusing on the concerns of LA-06 voters -- good paying jobs, affordable health care, and better education.

Don Cazayoux will be a tremendous asset to our Democratic Caucus, as we continue fighting to strengthen our economy and ease the squeeze on America's struggling middle class families.

UPDATE: Speaker Pelosi's Statement on Don Cazayoux's Special Election Runoff Victory in Louisiana's Sixth Congressional District:

On behalf of the Democratic Caucus, I welcome Congressman-elect Don Cazayoux to the House of Representatives and congratulate him on his stunning victory. As I tell every new Member, your title 'Representative' is your job description.

Don will be an independent Representative for the people of Louisiana's Sixth District. They showed today that they, like the vast majority of Americans, demand a New Direction for our country. Louisianans embraced Don's positive message of strengthening America's middle class by investing in education, creating jobs, making health care more affordable and bringing our brave men and women home from Iraq. His ability to work across party lines and build consensus will be a wonderful addition to the New Direction Congress.

Don Cazayoux's victory this evening proves once again that Americans across our country want real solutions and reject Republicans' negative attacks.

Bravo!

The best news is that the smear attacks didn't work, and all arguments that Obama will hurt candidates from conservative districts just took a giant hit.

And the real lesson: Don't screw with screw with us Obamanites in Dixie, 'cause we'll ruin your shit.

Are you listening, Hillary?

Be nice to America. Or we'll bring democracy to you country.

Gilda's district is just scary Republican.  And it borders the sixth.  It's got to be the most racist district in the country, right?  Remember how the sheriff's lined up to make sure black people couldn't flee the floodwaters over the bridges into their parrishes?  That was Gilda's district.

I know but I had talked with her personally and thought she was a great candidate.  I know you cannot win them all and some of the districts will take a long time to change and this is one of them.

The coming political tsunami continues to build.  What with John McCain manning the dikes and levees, I think the Rethuglicans will be simply overwhelmed-finally!   Roll on, Obama, roll on.

Wake up, life is lovely!

This is rich.  The Republicans just blew 6% of the COH to lose a solidly Republican seat.

LA-06:
Don Cazayoux - $809,806
DCCC - $1,185,396
Third Party Total: $150,000
Democrats LA-06 Total - $2,145,202
-------------------------
Woody Jenkins - $462,038
NRCC - $436,000
Third Party Total: $755,000
Republicans LA-06 Total - $1,653,038

LA-06 alone was 6.14% of the NRCC COH, but if you add MS-01 so far, that's another 13.84%

It's also great that Freedom Watch and Club for Growth blow three quarters of a million bucks.

What's "COH"???

I heard that Republican "Freedom ...whatever" group (Ari Fleischer) spent a bunch of money on this race too. Damn. Poor things. They just can't win.

another example of just how bereft the RATpubs are, financially, ethically and esp in terms of candidates.

l can't think of a RATpub seat anywhere that's safe  from an agressive challenger right now, esp in light of these kind of victories.

a generation or two in the wasteland would do them good, eh.

the revolution will not be televised...

Excellent! Here in MS, the Republicans are trying to do the Wright/Obama scary liberal thing against Childers in MS - 01 ahead of that runoff. This may make them a little more nervous. Cazayoux, now that's a cajun name -- Very Loosiana.
