My niece, the entrepreneur. She gets a mention in last Sunday's New York Times, too. I'm very proud of her.

What's going on with your family?

Display:
BooMan, yours is obviously a talented family. Have you been engaged to develop her web site?

Nope.  She's got her own guy.  A NJ state cop, I think.  I'm happy to help though.

I expect big things from this kid! Tell her congrats from the midwest. My 2 are in about the 10th band incarnation they started in high school. Last time they had a gig here it was a record crowd with sro and more people waiting around outside. I'm very proud of them and besides, they're fun to go listen to.

The Momcat got a call from Navy Son this morning.  After three years of hearing how much he hates the Navy, my level-headed firstborn apparently has decided to re-up.  Something about a reenlistment bonus and a down payment on a Jeep.  But then again, she said he was calling on Skype and it was hard to understand him.

My niece competed this week in the YMCA National Gymnastics competition in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.  She took  second in the floor exercise, fourth on the parallel bars, fifth on the beam and seventh overall nationally in in her age group.

She's psyched.  This is only her second full year in organized gymnastics.  She really has potential and absolutely loves it.  She is a young girl who is in constant motion and lives and breathes gymnastics.  Can't wait till her Dad, Granny and Papaw get home with the video.

Very cool. And Booman - you should be very proud. So you're not the only entrepreneur in the clan, eh?

My Mom turns 80 on July 4th. When she was little, she thought the whole country celebrated her birthday. Oh, the sorrows of aging!

How fortunate to have your mother at the age of 80.  Hope she is in good health.  Both of my grandmothers will turn 93 this year.  They both live by themselves and are sharp as tacks.  One still plants and tends a garden that puts most people's to shame.  She is an absolutely vicarious reader who does the NYT Sunday crossword puzzle every week (and always completes it).  A real gem.  The other cooks dinner every single Sunday for any of the local family who want to stop by, usually  a dozen or more show up.  It's all good Eastern Kentucky comfort food.

I consider myself truly blessed to have had the experience of being close to all my grandparents and having them around for so long.

Wow - that's really cool. I didn't even get ONE grandmother, and you have two, still living and active. You truly are very blessed!

Thanks. It is. I'm trying to find the big gift for the occasion, but it's much harder now...

that's awesome.  Coming in second in anything after only one full year of practice is pretty amazing.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.  The first time she ever took a first place in all-around competition was priceless.  At the awards ceremony they started at the lowest placing and began announcing names.  All the sudden she realized that she was the only one left who hadn't been called and her eyes got real big.  Never saw such an awesome smile in my life.  She just couldn't get rid of it all night.

Well done, Boo-niece!

My kiddo is pleased to have gotten a 31 on her ACTs.  Not bad for an 11 year old!

by Tehanu on Fri Jun 27th, 2008 at 11:28:09 PM EST
yeah, not bad for anyone.  Congrats.

Also, your niece is awesome. I can't imagine pulling that off at her age. Your pride has been earned.

she's more relaxed getting interviewed than I am.  I was nervous for her when I launched the video and then I realized she had everything under control.

She's very natural. I couldn't even begin to imagine doing that interview. Just like you, I'd be gushing. Awesome stuff.
