AM Alert: California Prop. 8 down by nine

Proposition 8, the hot-button measure to engrave a ban on same-sex marriage into the state constitution, is trailing by nine points, according to a new Field Poll.

More than two-thirds of GOP poll respondents (68 percent) said they would vote for the ban, while 63 percent of Democrats said they would vote "no."

Independents sided with the "no" side even more than Democrats (66 percent).

There's a good article in today's Detroit Free Press titled "Exclusion Looks Even Dumber Now" about how idiotic it was of Michigan voters to ban same-sex unions.

One way or the other, this darkness has to give....

Thanks for the link.  Are people in Michigan starting to wake up and tire of these friggin' distractions, too?  Hope so.  There's a part of me that feels like an idiot for having to waste time fending off the kind of tired nonsense that is Prop 8.  On the other hand, what other option do we have?  Here's to hoping our options improve and we can get down to fixing the stuff that really matters.

Sorry, just venting.  Am I being over-optimistic to think that a resounding defeat of Prop 8 would get us at least a little closer to getting Dobson and friends to just go away?

I think Kevin Drum makes an important point here:

I think we can be cautiously optimistic that Prop 8 is going to fail, which means that gay marriage will have been approved by the courts, the governor, the legislature, and the public. There's no way anyone will be able to complain that it's anything but completely legitimate.
