Ted Stevens Has Been Indicted

by BooMan

McClatchey reports that a grand jury has indicted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska. CBS-2 has some background on the case:

The FBI, working with an Alaska oil contractor, secretly taped telephone calls with Sen. Ted Stevens as part of a public corruption sting it was reported late last year, according to people close to the investigation.

The secret recordings suggest the Justice Department was eyeing Stevens long before June 2007, when the Republican senator first publicly acknowledged he was under scrutiny. At that time, it appeared Stevens was a new focus in a case that had already ensnared several state lawmakers.

The recorded calls between Stevens and businessman Bill Allen were confirmed by two people close to the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way. They declined to say how many calls were recorded or what was said.

Allen, a wealthy businessman and Stevens' political patron, agreed to the taping last year after authorities confronted him with evidence he had bribed Alaska lawmakers. He pleaded guilty to bribery and is a key witness against Alaska legislators. He also has told prosecutors he paid his employees to renovate the senator's house.

In July, FBI agents raided that house in the Anchorage suburb of Girdwood. Stevens has denied any wrongdoing and said he paid every bill he received for the project. Spokesman Aaron Saunders declined to comment Thursday.

I hope Sen. Daniel Inouye feels like a total jackass.

I printed the Inouye article and called his DC office.

I read the parts about their "peas-in-a-pod friendship" as well as Dann-o's fundraiser, and asked if he'll be doing another fundraiser to help with Ted's legal fees.

They said a press secretary will be getting back to me.  That will probably be kind of like the way Pat Murphy's aide got back to me when i called up asking about Verizon's refusal to hand over documents even though they got immunity.

Which is to say, no one called.

Dann-o feels pretty good, according to Kos:

Senator Daniel Inouye, Democrat of Hawaii, who is the chairman of the defense appropriations subcommittee and a friend of Mr. Stevens, said that "he is innocent until proven guilty." Mr. Inouye said he did not expect that the indictment would interfere with Senator Stevens's ability to work in the Senate.

gonna be kinda hard to accomplish anything when all his plum committee assignments are in the toilet; teddy the freeloader has resigned his posts as ranking member of both the senate commerce, science and transportation committee and the appropriations subcommittee on defense..."Consistent with GOP bylaws that require Members who are under felony indictment to relinquish their ranking posts on committees..."

that didn't take long.

The Grand Oil Party owns that brand. And they'll all say, it's an indictment..he's innocent until a jury or judge returns a verdict.

different day same sh*t in DC.

Bush needs an early start with those pardons: Cheney and himself, Senators Stevens and Craig, Jack Abramoff, Savfarian, AG Gonzo, Scooter, Rove, Harriet, Bolten on the subpoenas, A disgraced DOJ - Sampson, Goodling, the whole EPA, Wilkes, Cunningham, Blackwater, Hal, KBR...

this list is incomplete.

Inouye feel like a jackass? No, he's already released a statement today that this little indictment thing shouldn't interfere at all with Stevens' Senate duties. Obviously, he hasn't read the rulebook. But then, hardly any of them really care about rules, whatever the letter after their name.

On Capitol Hill, Sen. John Warner, R-Va., called Stevens a hero, adding, however, he didn't know any details about the indictment. "All of us have time that we have to deal with that are tough," Warner said. "I wish him the best."

he·ro:   Pronunciation[heer-oh]
-noun, plural -roes; for 5 also -ros.
1.    a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
2.    a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and        is regarded as a model or ideal
3.    the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc.
4.    Classical Mythology.
          a.    a being of godlike prowess and
beneficence who often came to be
                honored as a divinity.
          b.    (in the Homeric period) a warrior-
                chieftain of special strength,
                courage, or ability.
          c.    (in later antiquity) an immortal
                being; demigod.
5.    hero sandwich.
6.    the bread or roll used in making a hero sandwich.

Yep, Warner's right.  #6 fits Stevens to a tee.

Poor Teddy goes down a series of indictment tubes! It is just too easy to pile on. How long until his son and Young join him?

Am taking heart in the thought that generally Prosecutors start at the bottom and work their way up to the kingpin, that somehow we could hear Teddy doing some singing to get out from under this and bring down....oh please Gawd, some of those who perch above him. Please please please.
