Ted Stevens' Toxic PAC Money

by BooMan

From the Guru, we begin to get an understanding of why Republicans have been so reluctant to challenge the tyranny of Ted Stevens and his volcanic temper. It's not just fear, it's...

...Republicans across the country are facing demands to return or contribute to charity contributions from Ted Stevens and his Northern Lights PAC.  My inbox is overflowing with e-mail releases on the topic from Democratic candidates for Senate.  First out of the gate was Al Franken, calling on Norm Coleman to return $25,000 in contributions from Stevens.  Also in the inbox are releases from:

Aside from this group, many other Republicans received checks from Ted Stevens' PAC.  In the 2008 election cycle alone, Stevens' PAC also gave to: Lamar Alexander ($10,000), Saxby Chambliss ($10,000), John Barrasso ($10,000), John Sununu ($10,000), Roger Wicker ($5,000), and, to cap it off, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (a whopping $29,950).  Elizabeth Dole has announced that she is donating $10,000 (the amount she has received from Stevens over just the 2008 election cycle) to charity.  Will other Republicans follow suit?  Will the NRSC?

When Stevens isn't threatening to Hulk-Smash anyone that denies him a piece of pork he's doling out tens of thousands of dollars of PAC money to Republican colleagues that accept it eagerly and then go out and stump against wasteful government spending. It's a beautiful example of how corrupt our system of government has become...particularly under Republican rule.

A trend:

Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., on Tuesday swiftly joined a parade of GOP senators promising to rid themselves of campaign money that they had received from a powerful Alaska senator, Republican Ted Stevens, who was indicted on felony charges of failing to report gifts and income.

Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride said in an e-mail that Smith will donate to charity the $10,000 that he received from Stevens for his current re-election campaign. "Given the indictment, donating the money is the appropriate thing to do," Gilbride wrote.

Stevens' political action committee gave $10,000 in 2007 to Smith's current re-election campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records. In 2005 and 2006, Stevens gave a total of $10,000 to help pay off debts left over from Smith's first Senate campaign in 1996.

FEC records also show that various campaign entities for Smith had received $19,000 from two different Stevens political funds in the years before 2003.

At least two other Republican senators up for re-election, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., and Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., also announced Tuesday that they would donate to charity contributions from Stevens. Both said they would donate the $10,000 they had received from Stevens in the current campaign cycle to charity.

Smith's Democratic opponent, Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley, said that Smith should give to charity all of the $39,000 that he received from Stevens over the years.

"All of these donations have a cloud hanging over them" as a result of the felony indictments against Stevens, said Merkley, who suggested that Smith donate the money to a charity to provide health insurance to Oregon children.
