Jonathan Weisman of the Washington Post screws over Obama in today's column on the issue of abortion rights.
How it reads:
On paper, this campaign looks fairly standard. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion rights, while McCain, an Arizona Republican, has compiled a solid record over four Senate terms of opposing abortion. How it should read:
On paper, this campaign looks fairly standard. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion rights, while McCain, an Arizona Republican, has compiled a solid record over four Senate terms of opposing abortion rights. It's a subtle difference that makes all the difference in the world. It would be more obvious if it said:
Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion. That would be a profoundly inaccurate and unfair way of characterizing Obama's position. The decision to exise the word 'rights' from what McCain has opposed over four terms in the Senate is equally inaccurate and distorting.
