Biden's Big Mouth

by BooMan
Mon Sep 1st, 2008 at 09:13:55 AM EST

The right-wing is going to be all over this. It's all innocent. Joe Biden acknowledged the obvious...that Sarah Palin is good-looking...better looking than he is. He engaged in a little self-deprecation and had a little chuckle about how he's not what he used to be. But the danger is that he'll come across as patronizing. He wasn't being patronizing but it's so easy to cross that line with a candidate that is so clearly unfit for the job. Biden cannot afford to talk down to Palin and treat her like the token candidate that she is. It will infuriate a lot of women.

Biden is famous for saying things that are a little off, or that cross the boundaries of propriety. That is really the only main concern I had about him as a potential running mate. Yes, I disagree with him on some foreign policy issues and I really did not appreciate his vote for the bankruptcy bill. But it was his proclivity for the gaffe that disqualified him in my book. I don't see this as a big gaffe. It's a small gaffe and it should not be repeated even once for the duration of the campaign. Sarah Palin is not any more qualified than Michael Brown or Harriet Miers. Her good looks are neither a plus or a minus and should not be a topic of discussion for Obama or Biden.

Display:
She was picked because she ISN'T Helen Thomas's twin.  Let Palin do the runway stroll.  The typical 70/30 breakdown on this issue of her attractiveness vs her qualifications will work its way out on the ballot.

Democrats have a nasty habit of wasting time spinning around looking at their ass every time some sap says "Look what you sat in...Ha HA!" instead of just plunging forward.  We can count the hours to Election Day, don't sweat the small stuff.

But it was his proclivity for the gaffe that disqualified him in my book.

You writing his obit already?    In the real world people are supposed to have a sense of humour and not take themselves too seriously.  If anything, Obama's been too po-faced to allow many "ordinary people" to identify with him.

Being sympathetic and empathetic to Palin at the personal level whilst attacking McCain for NOT PUTTING THE COUNTRY FIRST by selecting the most qualifies VEEP is probably the way to go.

Or do swing voters really believe she is the BEST QUALIFIED person McCain could have chosen for the job?

The Council For National Policy Meets In Minn, Vets Palin
By Max Blumenthal     Mon Sep 01, 2008 at 02:48:46 AM EST      print story
Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.
CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain

just how many Americans would ever see this "gaffe". Have we all become so "politically correct" that we can't say what is on everyones mind? Jeez.  By the way, she was interviewed on CNBC yesterday and she's not as stupid as everyone thinks she is.

Her policies and beliefs are but she's not. She has dropped the g from her vocabulary though. Goin, doin, somthin.

More important than Biden I think!
Screw the wingnuts, they have been calling Palin a babe, as has Limpballs so they can't go after Biden

Good point.

We should focus on the goofy political things she has advocated.  The Alaska Independence Party thing for example seems like something that the MSM ought to be asking about..

Gov. Sarah Palin addresses AIP

McCain earned praise from evangelicals and other social conservatives who have been skeptical of him. Palin is a vocal opponent of abortion.

"Conservatives will be thrilled with this pick," said Greg Mueller, a conservative GOP strategist.

The price for that support could be high. Palin's lack of experience flies in the face of GOP charges that Obama is not ready to be commander in chief. McCain himself has said he was determined to avoid a pick like Dan Quayle, the little-known Indiana senator George H.W. Bush put on his ticket in 1988 in a choice that proved embarrassing.

from an Alaskan blog - Mudflats this is rich:

Reaction to Palin's Nomination from State Rep Mike Doogan

"But debating foreign policy with Joe Biden? What's she going to do? Hit him with her briefing book? If Palin has two thoughts about foreign policy, she's managed to keep them to herself. Ditto health care. National energy policy. Fiscal policy. You could make a long, long list, but I'll stop there. She's going to need a lot of handlers feeding her a lot of talking points, and she's going to have to hope that the discussion only goes about yay-deep.

She's also going to have to hope that the national media is as pliable as Alaska's has been. Palin doesn't like people criticizing her, and she's as competitive as any linebacker you ever met. If the campaign gets a little rough and tumble, that could be a bad combination.

So she could be great as a candidate. Or so so. Or blow up on the pad. But if the McCain-Palin ticket should win? Yikers. There's no way on God's green earth that she's prepared to be president of the United States. The only consolation for me is remembering that J. Danforth Quayle once held the job she's trying to get, and the world didn't end.

But Sarah Palin?

Really?

Gustav now a Category 2 (winds 110 mph or less) with expected rainfall of 6 to 12 inches in SW La.  Looks like the worst of it it will miss New Orleans by 80 miles or so.  With luck damage and loss of life will be far, far less than Katrina.

Thanks Steven, that's very good to see. Although our local flooding in June was minuscule in comparison, people lost homes and the frustration of relocation remains for many of them. A disaster the magnitude of Katrina I can't imagine.

It takes time for the levees to be weakened by torrential rain ...

City's fate sealed in hours
Timeline maps course of post-Katrina deluge

Timelines developed by forensic engineering teams probing the failure of the hurricane protection system provide a slow-motion picture of a deadly tragedy that unfolded with surprising speed.

The costliest natural disaster in the nation's history began early Monday, Aug. 29, with a small leak near the Interstate 10 High-Rise about 4:30 a.m. and climaxed with the horrific collapse of floodwalls along the 17th Street and London Avenue canals between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

It would take many more hours for the water to reach neighborhoods far removed from the gaping wounds in the city's defenses, but by the time the last section of the London Avenue floodwall came down, the breadth of the damage was inescapable.

I don't know if it is that big a deal. Over the weekend some woman who does a conservative talk show on WABC radio was going on about how Palin had "that sexy secretary look going and it was going good for her"

And within hours of being named on Friday I saw a link on a conservative blog to this: http://www.vpilf.com/

Despite the URL it is safe for work

by Andrew Longman on Mon Sep 1st, 2008 at 10:14:29 AM EST
No, it's not that big of a deal, but it's gotta stop.  My biggest worry is that Biden will call her 'Honey' in the debate, or do the equivalent with his dismissive attitude.

Agree they shouldn't go there. Let the right continue to talk about how hot she is and let that piss off women. But not all women. Interestingly a woman's look is often more important to women than men. Beauty pageants for example routinely draw far more women viewers than men.

I think they just need to let her talk about the issues and wait for her to embarrass herself. But they also don't want to make her look sympathetic

It may have been a gaffe in the sense that politicians are supposed to believe what they know ain't so and vice versa, but not in the real world. Ask anybody on the street and they'll acknowledge that being a beauty queen probably had something to do with Palin's political rise. If she's now done a 180 and doesn't want anybody to notice her body I can probably find her a store that sells chadors.

Politicians, unless they believe that the earth is 6000 years old and that some god wants them to rule the world, are required to stick to childish bullshit. But I thought around here we were supposed to be reality based.

Watch video: Obama shared the stage with running mate Joe Biden at the Lucas County Main library

Obama, who attended church Sunday in Lima, Ohio, promised to bring jobs to hard-pressed sections of the state.

"We're going to invest $15 billion a year in making highly efficient cars of the future right here in Ohio, right here in America," he said to loud cheers. He promised to help create plants to produce "windmills and solar panels and biofuels, right here in Ohio, creating millions of jobs that can't be exported."

I know. I keep wondering if I'm the only one who thinks she's merely not ugly--in skin-deep way, that is.

The real, straight to the bone ugly is the fact that she's played footsie with a secessionist group.

But it's Barack Obama who's had his patriotism questioned? What about questioning hers?

And then question McKept's sense--with which he seems to have taken permanent leave.

Can't hear ya, Peach!
