On Pitbulls and Lipstick

by BooMan
Thu Sep 4th, 2008 at 01:10:57 PM EST

Sarah Palin:

In last night's speech, Governor Palin characterized herself as a pit-bull with lipstick.

GOV. PALIN: I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom and signed up for the PTA. (Cheers, applause.)

AUDIENCE: (Chanting.) Hockey moms! Hockey moms! Hockey moms!

GOV. PALIN: (Laughs.) I love those hockey moms. You know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull: lipstick. (Laughter, cheers, applause.)

So I signed up for the PTA because...

I don't quote Dick Cheney often, but he had something interesting to say in November 2004 while campaigning against John Kerry.

"As we say in Wyoming, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," quipped Vice President Dick Cheney in a stump speech yesterday, with reference to John Kerry's claims he would be a credible war president.

I imagine the same logic holds true for pit bulls. Of course, my dog BooMan and I were once attacked and hospitalized by a pit-bull, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask for a dispassionate assessment of this self-characterization. For me, a pit-bull is an animal with the raw jaw-power of a leopard who will attack unprovoked and kill innocents. Don't believe me? The people of Anchorage, Alaska do. This is from the August 18th, 2008 edition of the Anchorage Daily News:

The 6-year-old girl attacked by a family pit bull last week was taken off of life support and died after she went into an irreversible vegetative state, according to Anchorage police and the girl's family. Isis Krieger was fatally injured in the attack while playing with Dozer in her East Anchorage mobile home last Tuesday. The dog bit her neck, breaking it and ultimately leaving her brain dead, said the girl's great-grandmother, Wanda Injasoulian. "I'm sick," said Injasoulian, who learned Isis had been taken off life support Monday afternoon. "I'm completely, totally devastated, and the thing that hurts me most is that I wasn't there when she went to Heaven."

There's no way to put lipstick on that.

we're giving Palin too much ink and this feeds into the premise of sexism.

I agree with Douthat:

[.]

Do not attack her. Stop referring to her as a just a small-town mayor and a neophyte governor who's unqualified to be President; in fact, stop referring to her at all.
Attack John McCain, John McCain, and John McCain. Attack him all day, all night, and on weekends too. Behave as though Sarah Palin does not exist.

Pray that the media will find some Palin-related scandal even more shocking than the perfervid theories aired this week (they'll be looking for one, no doubt), and in the event that they fail to do so, do not under any circumstances allow yourselves to be drawn any deeper into a debate (which the McCain campaign plainly wants to have) over the relative qualifications and accomplishments of Barack Obama and the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Nothing that's happened this week has changed the fact that it's going to be very, very hard for the Democrats to lose a race between Obama and McCain - and as a result, the Obama-Biden ticket has vastly more to gain from changing the subject away from Sarah Palin than they do from placing her candidacy, her qualifications and her background front and center in this race.

McCain's judgment needs to be attacked.

going forward, yes.

But right now is when the narrative around Sarah Palin is being set in the public mind.  She's a blank slate and we can't allow her to presented as some goody-two-shoes soccer mom made-good.

A blank slate my ass.

She's a honed, seasoned small town politician who knows how to deliver the red meat to the far wingnut base that's taken over the GOP - and that meat ain't walrus.

She speaks wingnut.

I think she decimated that illusion with her own speech.  Surely it will be replayed, in all its invective, spittle-flecked glory.

User her own words to put an end to that, and our side doesn't need to say a thing.

Palin Is A Heartless BITCH, Period:

Child taken off life support after pit bull attack

Isis underwent surgery at Alaska Native Medical Center the day of the attack, then was placed on life support, Injasoulian said. The girl's father was deployed to Iraq, and the family waited for him to return before taking her off the machines.

This comes from the Anchorage Paper on 08/18/08

no compassionate conservatives this time, just the mean pit-bull types. All I see from Palin is the "arrogance of the rich" and the "have mores". Tax-cuts for the rich and nothing more, if you are poor than we only care about you until election day..and your vote. After election day it is, if your poor its your own fault.

And all the liberals in Washington DC, W, Cheney, and Tom Delay Congress. If John and Sara find those person liberal, than i'm truly afraid of the "pitbull" politics of John McCAin.

Sorry about your dog Boo, I think that explains why you and I disagree on what i consider to be a wonderful breed.

that said, Palin's the kind of pit bull that gives pit bulls like our family dog Sherman  a bad name.

Sherman's just big lovable lug big enough for my son to ride like a horse.  He thinks he's a lap dog, and sits in a chair with the rest of the family during dinner (my brother will confirm this). The dog's so gentle when my mom's cat abandoned her kittens, Sherman raised one of them. Now, Thomas acts like he's a dog!

Sarah Palin's not like Sherman at all. She's the kind of pit bull that needs to wear a muzzle and be restrained because all it knows how to do is attack and kill.  A vicious brute of an animal.

Those kind of dogs never come to any good end, which incidentally I hope for both the McCain campaign and Sarah Palin's political future.

those of us who watch The Dog Whisperer have come to know and admire his faithful pit bull, Daddy. For years pit bulls were owned by those who admired their tough guy good looks, only within the last twenty years has there been a fad among the paranoid of getting pit bulls. The results have been tragic.

Having fallen for about 10 pieces of bait myself in the last week, I humbly suggest that everyone resist repeating her own words about herself vis-a-vis similarity to canines. Using female and dog in the same paragraph is treading on the thin, Alaskan ice she's beckoning us to walk across.

I bet half the media reports on this supposed scandal or lack of vetting were just that: an attempt to lure people into victimizing her on terms they are prepared to rebut effectively.

Palin is a pig.

Now, I must defend this breed of dog.
I adopted one who had been abused and he is the most gentle dog I've owned.

He shows no aggression to dogs, cats, adults or children. Ever.

Btw...the Michael Vick dogs will be on the National Geographic channel on Friday evening 9PM EST.
