Dropping the Veil of Deceit

Do you want to know why Republicans don't tell the truth very often? It's because when they do, it sounds like this:

SENATOR JON KYL (R-AZ): It is true that the question of earmarks is more symbolic than it is significant in terms of the total amount of money. But if he combines that with the notion of ending wasteful Washington spending…And so if addition to earmarks, which are relatively small, you begin to focus on not just raising taxes but to reducing spending here and there, that is a big deal...
...Kyl also said that the frequent conservative catch phrase “wasteful Washington spending” is just political rhetoric. “The reason that I use it is because the consultants who look at the polls tell us that if there’s anything that drives American taxpayers crazy it’s that phrase ‘wasteful Washington spending,’” he admitted. “They hate it.”

That's fantastic. I don't know why Jon Kyl decided to drop the veil of deceit for a moment and tell the truth. But I do know why it is such a rare occurrence. The truth is deadly to Republican arguments.

The Republicans rely on magical thinking, not unlike people in religious ecstacy, or how psychotics think. This mental state is what all great dictators want their followers to be in. That frenzy where reality doesn't matter. Family values? We got 'em, they don't, even if our Veep's family values don't work and our Prez was cheating on his first wife. Balance the budget? Yeah, even though our party has been borrowing us into bankruptcy?

It doesn't matter that there's no connection to reality. In fact, it's better that there isn't any connection to reality. Try talking to a true believer. Think of how much harder it would be if a Republican had to actually deal in facts. Better to say, "Wow, she's hotter than Coulter! And Obama took the oath of office on a Koran!" Toss in a noun, a verb and 9-11 and you've got the Republican strategy, even if 9-11 turns out to be a lie, too.

They know most of the country loves sound bites. They don't care if its good for the economy. Saves time if you are lazy and scared of your own ignorance. I'm not I've proved it over and over here on the Tribune. :)
