Self-Hating GOP Women

by BooMan
Tue Jan 27th, 2009 at 10:14:05 PM EST

The fact that only three House Republicans (none of them women) voted for final passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 is just stunning. When the Senate passed the bill, every woman in the Senate voted for it. That makes sense, since the bill ensures women cannot be discriminated against in the workplace. But, amazingly, Republicans (including all the their women in the House) are totally into discriminating against women. What explains this?

Their attitude is "I got mine; why can't you get yours?" In their minds, being a woman didn't prevent them from becoming Senators and they know for a fact that they're being paid the same as male Senators. Therefore, there is no glass ceiling, there are no barriers to the advancement of women and if a woman is paid less then it must be because she is worth less in the "free market" either personally thru lack of effort or generally because women are often absent from their career paths while being mothers or, you know, suffering from cramps.

This is the same mentality that justifies discrimination against people who start life in poverty. Some middle-class white guy thinks, hey, I got student loans and went to college so what's wrong with "those people" who can't graduate from high school. At this very moment, poor kids of color in inner city schools are being told nothing stands in the way of their becoming President of the United States... except having an intellectual mother, being given a solid middle-class upbringing and attending a private high school... but, but, it's not your color holding you back. Or sex. Or gender. Or lack of verbal skills instilled when you were 4 years old...

You're too kind to them. Their attitude is actually, "I got mine / I'm getting mine - F*** You!" It's a callous disregard for others, pure and simple.

Actually, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Lisa Murkowski all voter for the Lilly Ledbetter Act.  It's the House members that voted against it.

Apparently those in the south who espouse the republican view are not only bigoted but misogynistic as well.  AND they want us to be a third world country.  Check out this documentary about a Kentucky clinic.  The documentary is in: Dailykos diary on healthcare

It's the grand tradition of Ayn Rand. My (all girl) high school assigned Anthem. I could never understand how a women could write a book where the female character is such a non-entity.
