Deep Thought

Isn't it much nicer to be bitching about what a Democratic President-elect plans to do after he is sworn in on January 20th, and who he proposes to employ to implement his ambitious but necessary plans to turn our country around, than complaining endlessly and uselessly about the criminal acts Bush, Cheney & Co. have committed and continue to commit?

I sure do.

Reid: Free Ted Stevens!
Former senator Ted Stevens (yes, now actually former) is keeping up the fight against his guilty verdict -- and now Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid has lent him a hand.
Reid told Politico that he believes Stevens shouldn't serve jail time.
My personal feeling, you guys, I don't know what good that [would do]... He was a real war hero too, you know. He's been punished enough.
Reid said he thinks Stevens was simply behind the curve of modern ethics standards in not disclosing the $250,000 in gifts he received from VECO CEO Bill Allen, saying of the famously internet-unsavvy Uncle Ted that "it's a different world we live in, and Stevens did not understand that."

Just wondering will Reid hold to the same views on Blago...that he was simply behind the curve of modern ethics standards !!!?!!!

Just goes to show you what team these Democratic leader guys and gals are on. It ain't team liberal, team progressive, or even team Democrat, apparently.

It's shocking yet amusing because of the absurdity of it. Reid, a leader of his party, reaching out to help a convicted felon of the opposing party while giving no such quarter to a member of his own party when the official in his party has been accused (and not yet convicted) of the same crimes. One would think that the leader of a party would at least pretend to offer support to his team and attack the other team. Reid apparently has been beaten upside the head so many times that he has his head gear on backwards, his mouthpiece half sticking out of his mouth, and a stupid-ass grin on his face as he get pummeled, no longer remembering who to fight, how to fight, or what team he's on.

Due to his advanced age and service to his country, I would give Stevens a staggering beggering fine and only a week or so behind bars. But I would never excuse his behavior in the way Reid did there.

There are lots of men who served their country behind bars. But they are not rich and often black.

they also aren't 86 years old. I don't favor putting people in their late 80's in prison for long periods.

I don't have a problem with putting a codger in prison - advanced age should impart advanced wisdom, or at least some wisdom, and if an octogenarian wants to act like he's 20 then he should be willing to pay the penalty like he's 20. I wouldn't be opposed to a massive fine that leaves him destitute as a substitute penalty (even though he'd still live free on someone else's dime for the next few years), but I certainly wouldn't object to significant prison time for him either.

I would levy a staggering fine, a week in jail, and then house arrest for 5 years - wearing one of those tracking devices and having his actions severely curtailed (no leaving town, only travel from home to work and back again, etc.). I'd also mandate a metric ton of community service.

But then, I advocate for house arrest and community service for most non-violent offenses. Jail is a costly solution that really is only necessary to keep violent people from hurting other people. Non-violent offenders should be able to work, pay taxes, and pay for their own room and board while serving their time.

Honestly, I don't think some of us know how to handle it. We've been so used to raging against the machine that we continue to rage, even when the machine is (at least nominally) on our side.

But yeah, it's nice to contemplate good things ahead rather than worrying about what new atrocity is going to be sprung on us today.

We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Now the real work begins.
