and I'm not ready for the weekend to end yet.  Mostly because I have to head back to the old job for one more day before starting the new one on Tuesday.

At least I'll have leftovers for my lunch from today's turkey dinner at home.

What's everyone else up to?

Good morning CG,

Is it still the weekend?  I guess once you retire everyday is Saturday. ;)

The friends and their dogs left last night and the nephew, niece, their family, dogs and puppies are leaving this morning.  By noon there should finally be some peace and quiet in the house.

I'm up to nothing which, after 3 days of family gatherings, sounds absolutely delightful.

I really just don't want to ever see a turkey again as long as I live.  I've got a load of it still in the fridge, and is it just me or does it smell pretty much like a fart every time I open the fridge door?

Next year we're having something else.  Screw tradition.

At the moment, yes.  Although our arum lilies usually get trampled by our other Lily (being that they grow just behind the house in a puppy short-cut zone).  At the moment the more mobile of the two is wandering around the living room wondering where all the popcorn went.

Being older does make a difference.  As does having been a mum.  I expect it will take the better part of a week for her to be her old self again.

At least we won't have to suffer through her heats anymore.  But Lily will likely start having them any day now. The joys of breeding dogs - insane bitches, and every stray male in the neighborhood showing up every 6 months.  I have no idea why people don't neuter their pets if they are not breeding animals - it's a damned nuisance dealing with hormonal animals. At least you can ply hormonal people with chocolate and red wine.

Good morning Andi and Keres,

It's cold here this morning (38F) and our heater went out yesterday.  Inside the house it's not too bad at the moment, and hopefully the repairman will show up today.  They are predicting we'll go into the mid-20's this weekend, and they said we may even see a flurry.  I doubt that seriously, but it's something to look forward to.

If there is one advantage to a wood stove it is that it rarely ever breaks down (although we occasionally run out of wood when the weather or laziness has hindered cutting down a tree).

Mid-twenties huh, I' pretty sure I haven't been in that neighborhood over a decade.  We get down to 0 C/32 F about three times each winter, but never lower than that.

Ironically we have two fireplaces in the house, but haven't used them in years.  At this point and time I would be afraid to use them.  They really need to be cleaned out before wood is burned in them.

We'll get down into the 20's from time to time, and I think last year or the year before we got down into the teens.

Now that this month has started I'll be a little more aggressive in looking for a place.  The only problem is that since the is a little college town most places don't have a hard time finding renters.

Luna just left with Imogen and Lily is having her usual conniption.  I have never had a dog with massive separation anxiety before. She really wants to have both Luna and I around all of the time. Imogen cops the worst of it when I take Luna visiting and leave the two of them at home.  I'll be so relieved when she grows out of it.

My current counter is to try and feed her into a stupor.

haha!  I love how they're all looking around in paranoia.

They always act that way.
However, this deer couldn't care less. -- & it's deer season for a hell of a lot longer than it's Thanksgiving Day.

When the GOP finally splinters, I think the nutso splinter group should use the turkey as their symbol. Talk about death panels ..

Turkeys were introduced to California as a game bird species.  About seven years ago I lived in an area with tons of oak trees, which they love for the acorns.  So it wasn't unusual to see flocks of forty or more birds.  My neighbors on either side both hunted them in season.  One invested in the high-tech gear approach, and the other rolled-out of bed in his pajamas and shot them from his front porch, and laughed at the other guy.

My housemate tells me that there were large flocks like that here in the Catskills in the 1960s. Now you rarely see more than a half-dozen. Too many hunters over the years, I guess -- in pajamas or otherwise.

The last wild turkey I prepped & ate was shot from the porch that way. She was carrying eggs.
Obviously, it's not always the best thing to do the easiest thing.

That's a great shot! Did you actually get that close?

I took my shot from an upstairs window at the farmhouse. They move so quickly that I couldn't have caught the picture otherwise. (See paranoia, GOP, Tricky Dick).

Maybe they're dumber in California, but I couldn't tell you the number of times I had to spot the car while they ran about the road in a panic before remembering that they could fly over the fence.  This was especially true of mums with broods.

They are stunning birds to see in person.  The color of their feathers rarely shows up in photos.  During hunting season we stayed out of our remotest valley so that they could stay there in peace and safety.

They don't seem to like to fly. They're always meandering in the road here, too.

& yes, they are beautiful, impressive birds. Someday when a good camera with telephoto lens drops out of a raincloud at my feet, I'll be able to capture them so much better. The patterns on their wings are really lovely, too, as well as their incredible color.

Andi & SN seem to have suddenly disappeared.

I'll take that as my cue to start dinner. No toys involved.

I suppose you could mix toys and cooking, but only if you made sure there was no chance of any grease spattering.

It's still morning here, but according to the clothes washer it is laundry hanging time.  Damned impertinent appliances, always telling me what to do!

Seriously, don't put down your washer, keres. I've used both a stream & a plastic bucket to wash clothes. The bucket took two toddlers' diapers, too.

On that note .. dinner!

You're right.  I love our new front-loader.  And one should never disparage one's machinery, at least not in its presence.

When it starts rain camera lenses, be sure to grab an extra telephoto one for me (500mm with auto stabilizer would be perfect).  Speaking of free cameras, if anyone still shoots film, I have a Nikon N2020 with two lenses that could probably be had for the price of postage.

I agree, turkeys don't seem to like flying, but I can't imagine how else they get forty feet up a tree, which is where I usually first spotted them.

They'll fly under duress. They may also sleep up there, I'm not sure.

Why are you letting go of your Nikon? Is it that difficult to use film any more?

by wilderness wench on Tue Dec 1st, 2009 at 06:32:40 PM EST
[ Parent ]
It's more expensive to use film.

My Nikon N70 does everything and more than my N2020.  I sold my medium format Mamiaya C330 a few years back because of the price of processing the film.

by keres on Tue Dec 1st, 2009 at 06:37:08 PM EST
[ Parent ]
Expense. Yeah, that's why I didn't get into taking pictures 'til The Digital Revolution.

However,  I'm finding that there's a quality to film that digital just can't match, even on a very high-end basis. Something like the differences between cd & vinyl.

Just you wait, eventually there's going to be a film resurgence too.
;-)

Back in a bit.

They readily fly around here. I wonder what the difference is.

I was about 25 feet away but inside the house.

The difference is that all the ones in the western US are descended from ones that got caught (obviously the ones that readily fly were less represented in that group).

Between my last day at work yesterday, migraine last night, first day at new job today, and CBtY's missed bus both days, I've missed all kinds of chatter here in the cafe.  Time for a new thread, methinks.

Sorry about all the strife.  Does this help with starting a new cafe?

I have no idea what it is (other than not native).  I just popped up in the front yard for the first time this year.  I guess it needed a really good watering.

by keres on Wed Dec 2nd, 2009 at 12:41:56 AM EST
"It" just popped up in the front yard.  I don't do much popping, and I certainly wouldn't do it in the front yard if I did.

Four hours later and Luna is still asleep in the back of the car and refuses to wake up enough to get out (she has turned around on the seat twice, so I know she can move). Pobrecita.  It's at times like this I understand the attraction of Chihuahuas.

Imogen got home and between the two of us we managed to get Luna out of the car and into the house (on her own four feet, once we lifted her off of the seat).  She had a little bit of water and went back to the soundest of sleeps.  If only we could get the same drugs for Lily.

Wow, talk about knocked out.  It would probably have a paradoxical effect on Lily, though.  Kind of like benadryl and CBtE...

New cafe on the way now that I'm awake again.
