Daschle Withdraws

Cable News reports that Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination. Good. It's embarrassing for Obama but he'll be better off in the long-run.

Good, now let's hope he picks Howard Dean.

I would support that.  There is also the health czar position to fill now.

Let's keep in mind that Obama supported him to the end. He was afterall one of Obama's earliest and greatest supporters.

What bothers me about Daschle is that we are losing a good, fervent Democrat who has probably seen the last of national politics, because there is no way he will get back to Washington via South Dakota.

We should be mourning Daschle. A real loss to the party.

Yep - I'm writing an action alert to an old Dean list right now.

Obama performance chief Killefer out, citing taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nancy Killefer withdrew her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government, saying she didn't want her bungling of payroll taxes on her household help to become a distraction for the Obama administration.

In a brief letter to Obama, the 55-year-old executive with consulting giant McKinsey & Co. wrote that she had "come to realize in the current environment that my personal tax issue of D.C. unemployment tax could be used to create exactly the kind of distraction and delay" that must be avoided in responding to urgent economic problems.

She offered no further details of her tax difficulties.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

God! Are they all tax cheats? This is starting to remind me of the Carter administration. A President full of ideals, aides cheating and grafting, and total failure to solve the county's economic problems resulting in a huge Rightward shift in the electorate for a generation.

OK, right.. good. how about vetting the next nominee BEFORE nomination?

why not nominate Howard Dean?

by Superpole on Tue Feb 3rd, 2009 at 01:00:41 PM EST
There certainly can't be anything in his background that hasn't been found by now. There's been no lack of searching since 2004.

So who is there now available with the legislative and personal capabilities to help shepherd the issue of universal health care through the complex machinations of the legislative process?

As much as many of us like Howard Dean, does he really have the, dare I say, insider skills to accomplish this?

That was one of the big sells made on behalf of Daschle.

Now what?

There isn't going to be any 'universal health care' to shepherd.

The original  Daschle nomination was pretty good proof  of that.

With the economy crumbling, there wasn't going to be a health care plan in the first place.  In a few months, everything's going to be on the back burner other than trying to salvage America's economy from total collapse.  I'm nowhere near convinced it's even possible.

And a hell of a lot more of us are going to be uninsured over the next couple of years as we are increasingly unemployed.

Daschle merely got out while the getting is good.  If there was any justice, Tim Geithner would follow.

Maybe the Senators themselves could stand up to the plate and do their job without an executive shepherd.

My cynicism gets the better of me on us ever seeing that happen.

In a bipartisan move designed to appeal to survivalists, end times enthusiasts and the mentally unhinged, I predict that Obama will pick Tom Coburn for the spot.

why'd it take so long? they've known about this since before he was chosen.

with killefer out this makes 3 instances where income tax gaffes have become an issue, and, at least in dashle's and geitner's cases, we're not talking chump change.

it appears the vaunted obama machine has lost a lot of it's luster during the vetting process.

bizness as usual.

the revolution will not be televised...
