Deep Thought

by Steven D

I think a pandemic flu virus is as much of a threat, if not more so, as Osama Bin Ladin and Al Qaeda to American lives. Indeed, in terms its potential to harm and kill Americans, and wreck havoc with the world's economy, I'd say it's a greater threat. Yet we just spent the last eight years spending hundreds of billions of dollars fighting a war in Iraq to protect us from the "terrorists" who attacked us on 9/11 and the threat of even worse attacks using weapons of mass destruction (the official reasons) while this year Republican senators (specifically Susan Collins, but really every Republican who voted against the Stimulus package) killed a provision to fund 900 million dollars for preparation for flu pandemics. You have to wonder about the priorities of the Republicans. Public health is a job only government, at the local, state and federal levels, can perform. If only to help Donald Rumsfeld make money off his investment in the company that makes Tamiflu you'd think they'd be on board with doing whatever possible to save American lives.

But then I remembered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and I realized the health and welfare of living, breathing ordinary Americans just isn't that important to them.

BREAKING NEWS:
WHO Raises Alert Level to 4

The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu by one level to phase 4, two steps short of declaring a full-blown pandemic. WHO says the phase 4 alert means sustained human-to-human transmission is causing outbreaks in at least one country.

We see this attitude over and over again, whether it's the pro-life logic vs turning a blind eye to our military being maimed and killed for political purposes; or defense spending vs education for our children or even infrastructure.

Take a look at Bush's idea of keeping us safe prior to 9/11..much easier to spend $ on arm chair missles than pay any heed to box cutter carrying long haired terrorists. Up until 9/11 it wasn't possible for a right winger to think that an attack could be accomplished by people, no there had to be a state and there had to be a heavy military complex involved. As 9/11 unfolded, there were no targets for the missles, the bombs and the arm chair White House folk...Cheney was helpless, Bush was clueless and it became apparent to everyone that the WH had sorely misjudged its enemy.

Have you seen the diaries at DK and Huffington that this may be coming from unsanitary situations (pig dung and flies) at corporate farms in Mexico and even in Iowa.

Oh and there is a new rumour floating around somewhere, I read it in comments on newspaper site, Obama started this flu to cover for Clinton giving 500(or maybe more) mil to Hamas.  So we won't know about it I guess.

looks like Collins is going with the lie about what happened damage control. I hope someone better acquainted with the record than I will come up with the links to refute this.
