White Men Thread

by BooMan
Wed May 27th, 2009 at 07:03:36 PM EST

This thread is for white men. This is where white men can bitch and complain about how tough it is to be a white man. For example, according to Pat Buchanan, none of the finalists for the Supreme Court nomination were white men. It that fucked up or what?

As a white man, I really hate the fact that other white men, with whom I have no connection, are embarrassing our segment of the population by seemingly doing everything wrong. It's especially chafing that there are so many white men in the political and pundit class, where literally everything they say or do is wrong, every analysis off, every prediction proved false, every conviction or belief in how the system should be run failed, yet they continue to say and do dumb stuff. I think we need a political party for competent white men  (CWM). Our group is as unrepresented in our government.

To make up for all this White Men oppression, here's the much-anticipated sequel to an Engineer's Guide to Cat Yodeling: Advanced Cat Yodeling, featuring two affirmative action candidates.

Love it.

It would be a shame, and a great loss to humanity, if two such talented guys were passed over simple because they were white.

I do.  For instance, when I first started working, the men's room had real cloth towels.  The ladies room had paper towels.

Have you been watching "Mad Men" on AMC the last two seasons? Takes place in the 60's. Real culture shock for me. Yes, all the women had to be secretaries while all the White Guys were drinking on the job and ogling over the women in the office.

And to think they all get paid the same, whether they're white men or not! Because these are Guv'ment jobs, it just ain't fair to us white dudes.

At a past job I worked on an IT project where I had access to tons of data, including everyone's salaries in the (BIG) corporation. I found that I, as a white man, made about 30% more than the white women who were equal to me - or even better qualified. Considerably more than that for anyone with a better tan or more exotic name that I had.

It's disgusting and it has to stop. White dudes had their day and they need to let things equalize out once and for all. This is just crazy.

Too tired to snark after a long day of work, so let me be a wet blanket by making an observation that's been on my mind for a while.

First, every time someone on the right makes some remark about the "majority", I have to wonder who the hell they're talking about. As soon as you divvy up the demographics by race and gender, there is no majority. I can't find a comprehensive breakdown at the moment, but whites are 74% of the US population. Given a roughly equal division by gender, that makes white men a minority of 37%. White Christian men? About 29% of the population.

(As an interesting side note, a 2007 survey found that there are only two, um, religious groups in the US that score more than 2% of the population: Christians, at 78%, and atheists/agnostics at 16%. Guess which one is growing and which one isn't.)

might vote to overturn Roe v. Wade:

On Sotomayor, Some Abortion Rights Backers Show Unease

By CHARLIE SAVAGE
Published: May 27, 2009
WASHINGTON - In nearly 11 years as a federal appeals court judge, President Obama's choice for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, never directly ruled on whether the Constitution protects a woman's right to an abortion. But when she wrote opinions that touched tangentially on abortion disputes, she often reached outcomes favorable to abortion opponents.

Now some liberal leaders are quietly expressing unease that Judge Sotomayor may not be a reliable vote to uphold Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 abortion rights decision. In a letter to supporters, Nancy Keenan, president of the National Abortion Rights Action League, urged them to pressure senators to demand that Judge Sotomayor reveal her views on privacy rights before any confirmation vote.

I'm sure there were white men Obama could have picked who'd have been much more reliable supporters of a woman's right to control her own body.

But if he had picked a white man there would have been a shitstorm of protest from women and minorities.

Ironic.

I think that the real GOP worry is that Judge Sotomayor is smart, knowledgeable and assertive enough to sway a vote or two for civil rights and labor unions.  They claim she isn't smart enough, what they really fear is her intelligence and drive.  When will they claim her academic record disqualifies her because she must be an elitist?

I'm at a lost about what to write. Maybe white men want to corner the market on free "government" cheese, and have an unemployment rate higher than the national average.

In the late 1950's I worked at NSA as a crypt linguist.  There were many beautiful women employed there as analysts etc.  What an irony that a governmental stalwart in the cold war should be such a progressive oasis in employment.  Mirabile dictu--strange to say.
